Punjabi nationalism died in 1947 in Pak. People living in Pak believe only in Islamic nationalism. Except that some part of erstwhile Punjab is in the modern-day Pak, Pakistanis have no connection with the indigenous Punjabi culture. Native Punjabi culture belongs to India

I am Punjabi Indian and living in Ahmedabad Gujarat,I was speaking Gujarati and Hindi though our parents spoke Punjabi and we could understand Punjabi but not speak Punjabi , However I observed Bengali, Marathi and South Indian living in other Northern states of India they speak there mother tongue,Of late I have started listening to PTC Punjabi and improved my Punjabi lot. Bengali is Sweety language but Punjabi is language of Love... Punjabi Indian feel more close to Punjabi Muslim , these other Indians do not understand.. So as a nation Punjabi Hindu Sikh Muslim have Punjab there true nation culturally and geographicaly .. I love listening to Punjabi Pakistani speaking Punjabi so well and lovely style..I also love Punjabi in Multani style....

Honest question: I'm someone who grew up in Lahore in a Punjabi family (both sides). Family setup was such that my grandparents would talk to each other in Punjabi, father would talk to most of his family in Punjabi and mother would use a mix of Urdu/Punjabi (Punjabi mostly with her parents). HOWEVER, they would talk to us kids in Urdu. I had English education since I can remember and think & work in English/Urdu. I've been living abroad now and have been for almost a decade and a half. Living abroad gave me some perspective on how we've been killing/rejecting our own language and culture (growing up in Lahore you don't realize this) and I've been trying to get up to speed with Punjabi with mixed success (I understand pretty well and can sorta speak too but not as confident as I am with Urdu/English). I had my first kid last year and have this HUGE yearning to speak with them in Punjabi and expose them to Punjabi content (children books, cartoons etc). However, there's such limited content from Lehnda Punjab (at least not a lot that I'm aware of). Any tips from anyone on where I can get some kind of content that I can show them or read to them and so on would be highly highly appreciated! I want my kid to grow up speaking and understanding Punjabi to connect with their roots especially when we're living abroad. Thanks so much to whomever made it all the way through my comment. Lehnda Punjab has close to no resources whatsoever, but please, I implore you, speak to your kids in Punjabi 😁 Teach them their culture. I too, when I have children, will speak to them in Panjabi. Have a good day ❤

Please do talk about the 40 Years of Maharaja Ranjit Singh' s Raj. As he was a fair and just King, his subjects were treated as equels no matter which religion you belonged to. He employed in his Royal court and his army officers only persons who had merit for the role required. All were prosperous and content in his Punjab, there was very little crime and interestingly no one was given capital punishment in his Raj. If a crime had been committed, you were banished from Punjab and that was an unbearable punishment. Punjabi's lived harmoniously together, his huge modern army consisted of Hindu, Sikh and Muslims soldiers who were all very loyal to him. Under his rule all Punjabi's were prosperous, they owned land, gold , earned a good living etc. It attracted the best craftsmen, weavers, fine clothmakers, goldsmiths remember... "Sorne' ke pijara"..He kept the British out of Punjab while he was alive , he didn't trust the British but after his death in 1839 the British took 10 years to deviously enter Punjab (greed of gardars ) 😅 because people resisted the invaders. Those Punjabi's continued to fight together even until 1947 to restore Punjab and throw out the British. The British completely looted Punjab and destroyed all of its strengths, its culture, its language, its education system, its money, its gold and brainwashed the people to believe Punjab was nothing , whereby Urdu was taught in Punjab, which M. Ranjit Singh encouraged, under him we had 78 % literacy rate in Punjab in early 1800s. Whereas only 7% of the elite could read and write in England at that time !!!

The tragedy of Punjabi language is that it was linked to the religions instead of the land , the area or the society . Muslims choose Urdu over Punjabi and Hindus to Hindi . The language is always linked to to the social setting a tool of communication. Urdu was made to facilitate Hindi speaking people in UP , MP and CP with heavy Vocabulary if Arabic languages . On the other side Hindus under Arya Smaji conspiracy disown Punjabi . Bengalis , Gujratis and Tamils are not less Hindus while speaking their mother Tongue. I am a Hindu but Punjabi. Although I was born in Allahabad we spoke punjabi at home. My mother tongue will forever be punjabi. You are nothing without your mother tongue. No matter how many other languages you are able to speak. Pakistani punjabi can sell everything to not to become punjabi. A very sad lot. They can even disown their most famous ruler Ranjeet Singh and freedom fighter Bhaghat Singh and also one of the most peer baba Bulleah Saha. They have an inferiority complex. No future for these type of people.

So good to listen to this conversation. I cant tell how happy I was when I heard Ghadri babe from Bajwa sahab. These are literally the unsung heroes of Punjab. I guess Charda Punjab is a bit more aware of their cultural history because the state allowed it to be taught and they are more considerate when it comes to its preservation. I wish this was also the scene in western Punjab.

Before partition, Punjabi muslim and hindu elites highly favoured Urdu and Hindi respectively, over their mother tongue Punjabi. Punjabi was demeaned as an inferior and underdeveloped language by the Punjabi Muslim and Hindu elites. It is due to the Sikhs that Punjabi language is still alive.

Hindustani wasn't chosen by Punjabis but imposed on them by the British. All literature of Punjab was in Punjabi. Mian Mohd Baksh and Khawaja Ghulam Farid are two very great poets of that era.

As someone who is not South Asian, but was exposed to Indian and Pakistani cultures about 13 years ago. From my experience most Indians proudly speak their respective mother tongue. In this I found out that Urdu originated in Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow) and that their are many Urdu dialects throughout India that are natively spoken (Dekhani, Odia Urdu, Goan Urdu, Kolkata dialect, etc.) however it was strange to me that Urdu (socially) was associated with being Pakistani. When asking Pakistanis which language they spoke, they’d always answer Urdu, rather than a regional language. Most Pakistanis I knew were either from Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi. It made sense that people who had links to Karachi just claimed Urdu as the city is Muhajir majority. But it confused me that people with heritage in Islamabad or Lahore just claimed Urdu when these cities are located in Punjab. My Sikh friends would proudly claim their Punjabi language and heritage but when talking about Pakistani Punjabis they would claim that Pakistani Punjabis mostly spoke Urdu. A language not native or traditional to Pakistan. With this being said, if Pakistanis want to show true cultural pride, I think they should actually prove it by implementing Punjabi language in all facets of life, academics, media. Punjab is still Punjabi majority. Nothing is stranger to me then people of known Punjabi heritage have a legit identity crisis.

Urdu is literally hindi written in persian script. Punjabi/Gurmukhi/Shahmukhi is real pure language with own script. Sikhs won't let hindu bahmans destroy Punjabi.

It’s actually Hindi which is a cheap copy of Urdu. In the hate of everything related to Muslim culture the Hindu nationalists artificially created Hindi in the late 19th century by replacing Arabic and Persian words of Urdu with the Sanskrit words. The majority of them still speak Urdu but proudly call it Hindi, those artificially infused Sanskrit words are probably either too difficult for them to pronounce or sound too ugly. All these Bollywood songs are in Urdu.

@@Gangoodeshi I think you may be right. These hindus are only good as copycats. They copied persian tone and punjabi alphabet to create "kaa khaa gaa". Do you think tone "kh" is exculsive to persian language? its not found in english and probably also sanskrit.

​@@garryj7845well I am hindu Brahmin from maithili region in Bihar. What I can tell is that the dialect of Hindi is 'Braj' language in western UP. That same dialect was adopted by delhi residents to create Urdu. Lot of Persian and Arabic words were inserted. Later the same dialect was used for hindi and sanskrit words were used in place of Persian words.
