I can really only defend picking Trotsky Icepick for 2 reasons: (a) the band name is pretty punk, and (b) they were on SST. If they had been on some indie rock label, I probably wouldn't have used them.

I found The Malignmen and Trotsky Icepick in antique malls, but more typically I'm getting punk either from a record store, VCLT, or direct from the band.
