Tanya Tagaq accesses deep emotions and connections in her unusual and powerful performance.
Inuk punk Tanya Tagaq has given her visceral, elemental performances from Canada’s Northwest Territories to Carnegie Hall. Her unique vocal expression is rooted in Inuit throat singing, but expands well beyond traditional culture to incorporate electronica, industrial, and metal influences. Tagaq has collaborated with artists ranging from opera singers to experimental DJs, and been honored with a string of Juno nominations. Her latest CD, Animism, features Michael Red, a live programmer whose wild northern field recordings often serve as her de facto backing band.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The amount of effort to produce those sounds at that rate is extraordinary. Her voice didn't crack at all, nor was she out of breath. I think people are confused because they're unaware of this demonstration of ability, and because it's not singing in the traditional sense.

For the uneducated, this is actually Tagaq's own style of throat singing. No, traditional Inuit throat singing does not sound like Tuvan throat singing, but it's typically done as a duet because it was originally more of a game or competition. Tagaq's style is a solo version. Anyway, you don't have to put it on your iTunes playlist, but be respectful. Things aren't weird or bad just because they don't sound like what Westerners are used to. Even if it's not to your personal taste, I would think you could appreciate the fact that she's not ashamed of her culture instead of turning up your noses...

I know right? Then I remembered the cases of studies about demonic possession and how they explain that people can actually activate the vocal chords differently and also use each one for a different tone to sound like there's more than one voice. I had no idea how this could be done until I heard this. Is very impressive the different sounds we can actually produce. Some throat singers can separate really well two diferent tones, like the tibetan throat singing, and their polyphonic overtone. It's so incredible.

I totally understand how strange Tanya's music can seem. It is so raw and primal. I saw her in concert at Davis. With a simultaneous slideshow of the atrocites that have been perpetrated upon her people and all Native Americans, she gave a very visceral lament, a well needed and respectable lament true to her tribes! Afterward, she herself seemed exorcised from the group trauma inflicted upon her people. I think if more of us were to get in touch with the sounds that our insane world makes us feel, we could free ourselves from a lot of trauma.

I can't comment on the Inuit throat singing since I am not Inuit or familiar with it to speak about it. What I will say is coming from not knowing anything about a controversy over her style, when I saw "Punk" as part of the description I knew it would be far from traditional. I found it compelling and captivating. I saw that she was at that moment free of the weight of social expectations and released into the experience. To be able to channel all those emotions, those otherworldly beings and be that free is a gift most of us do not experience in our life. I am taking away from this inspiration to find my own freedom of expression to release myself.

Although Inuit throat singing probably originates from the Tuva or other Mongolian peoples, it changed drastically over the millenium. One of those changes is that it is mostly done by the women and usually 2 women together. For those of you who think her music is "weird", etc. Might I remind you that it DOES say PUNK in the description. Punk in any musical form is not for everyone. Her art is unique.

So many people say 'demonic,' or possessed, or 'like The Exorcist.' These comments look like a consistent trend. It's embarrassing. She has another level of human honesty. There's something people can learn, if they're brave enough. She's performing it here - she knows something we don't. Sure, you can hear it, and then run away... and make a cute comment to keep distance... or you can hear it and listen, and keep listening. She's a very deep artist. She's giving us a gift. She deserves SO much respect. She's barefoot, giving a solo performance of extremely emotional material, in a medium that's not recognised. She has an incredibly strong heart.

The fuck is wrong with this comment section?! She's fucking awesome! She's like a living beatbox/SFX machine! I'd love to have her to do backdrop ambiance/rhythm in a recording. It doesn't match the western definition of "singing", but that doesn't mean it isn't singing. Can you not see the storytelling element going on here? She's also voice-acting! Playing more than one role at the same time! With NO backup so you can better focus on her performance, which is the topic! So sod off you uneducated tarts, I like it! I actually GET your cultural contribution ms. Tagaq, and thanks for assisting Bjork with the album that is currently in my car CD player! We're all from the same weird universe, and I like your corner of it fam!

Pretty strange I would admit, but so clever. So many tones at once, plus 21st century bedlam in voices, manic sounds one can hear by thousands each day on the tube train but all done with one voice. Just because you are not used to this does not make it bad, it tends to prove ignorance and lack of appreciation by the comments on here.
