62 years old. had to stop listening to radio in the early 80s. Missed all that stuff. In the late 80s my cousin told me he was in a band and I asked what kind of music they played. He told me pop. The band was called material issue and I didn't know what he meant by pop so I missed that whole thing. Finally started catching up in the mid-to-late 90s but there's just too many bands too much incredible music over the decades. It's hard enough keeping up with what's going on now

I am sad to hear that some people think there are some rules to follow in order to be punk. What a lot of rubbish. Nobody who really loves punk rock music wants rules and every single band to sound the same or hate to be in a solid out concert. Even the old days were different sounding punk rock bands from sex pistols and clash to harder GBH or Exploited to Jam,Buzcocks and Stranglers but nobody said they were sell outs or give them a different label like pop punk what a stupid term anyway. Punk rock and pop is totally 2 different things and you can't call Green Day a pop band just because they sold more records than the expected

Excellent doc. Really excellent. I would like to weigh in on the newer "Punk" bands. At least, they play instruments and sing, even write their own songs. Pop music is so vapid these days. Nothing but a singer, usually a female dressed like she walked off a porn set, who doesn't play or write songs or music or even sing and has a bunch of background dancers. At least these people didn't just assume that if they go on American Idol they would become rich and famous but go to the clubs and play music, just because they love music.

It's quite upsetting to think how paradoxical Punk became. What started as a philosophy of non-conformity and Leftist fervour became increasingly strict in terms of what clothing one would have to wear to be classed as a Punk. Essentially it became a uniform and no different from the corporate, Capitalist ideologies that it was supposedly at odds with. You should be able to wear what ever the hell you want and still classified as a Punk, you shouldn't need to wear a studded leather jacket, tartan bondage trousers and Dr. Martens, Punk should be all about the freedom to wear what you want, mix it up and craft your own alternative style.

Punk, like all new creative ideas didn't so much die as become incorporated into the flow of other rock styles. The DIY style, the anger and youthful energy that was totally missing in mid-70's rock was radical for the moment, but it wasn't long before these musical styles got picked up by more mainstream genres. The speed and anger picked up by the new metal along with the clothing ideas, for example. Its a cycle that repeats all the time: in the 60s it was the creativity of acid rock that eventually was spread across to all pop music styles. And along with this cycle come the zealots who decide who is pure and who sold out, forever playing the same style and never letting it grow or even get popular.

people now don't get how we were reviled for listening to bands like Black Flag, GBH, Suicidal...I was so weird, wearing combat boots, torn up flannel shirts, a shaved or spiky haircut, and an army Jacket...pretty tame fare, really. I got called a fag, or a weirdo, by people I'd never met, countless times. Anything goes these days, but for purposely going against the grain, we had mental problems, was the general opinion back then. A standard thing then was painting the back panel of your army or leather jacket white, then painting band logos, taping stickers and shit, and making like a billboard on your back of bands and stuff. Once a kid at school was like "what's up with that, you're weird, and a teacher stopped and said, "no, he's an artist, that's art." Blew me away, the one time I got defended by and adult. Everything they were saying in the beginning was totally true. It was a joke, really, but only galvanized us the more.

To those who wanna classify as something that is punk vs isn't punk, I quote the great Professor Graffin: PUNK IS: the personal expression of uniqueness that comes from the experiences of growing up in touch with our human ability to reason and ask questions. Do with that what you will, but it doesn't matter how the music sounds or how the style looks and if it's popular or not. If it fits that definition, then it's Punk. At least to me anyway ;) I'm just a punk though, so I don't know.

And honestly, to me, pop punk is like the younger annoying brother, you can't stand, but they're still family, whether you like it or not. I may not like the music, but I'll say I respect that one member of Sum 41 saying they don't want to call themselves a "punk band" because they don't want to follow rules or try to impress anyone or prove something.

Why is it that alot of these independent films about punk rock refuse to mention FEAR , which was probably the punkest bank in the USA in the 70's . And they had lyrics and songs that were actually good while being uncomprimisingly punk. The only other successful punk band with good real punk songs would be the sex pistols. Black flag had crappy songs , like most other punk bands. And green day , offspring , and all other 90's bands were not punk at all , they were just a mix of alot of different styles.

The punk is dying because the people who says to be punk they have a very closed mind and does not allow that this so good kind should evolve, I love the punk and the pop-punk and nevertheless when there goes out a new band that wants to be called punk you they criticize her so much that they have to change kind not to be absent the respect to the real supposition punk... SHIT ...:D
