Puppet Building Episode 4

So after re-editing the lost episodes here's the next episode on Building Mouthplates for your Roly Puppet Pattern!
In this episode we look at the many different materials you can use to make mouthplates and grips. We begin making an intermediate mouthplate with waistband elastic and a sewing machine.

In a rush to get the video out I forgot to mention some particulars in the narration... 1) When I state I am using sign board found at the Dollar Store it is the corregated plastic type of sign board- I highly recommend first time builders to use this material as it is cheap, pretty sturdy and easy to work with. 2) Gaffer's Tape is Fabric/cloth Tape mainly used in the film business I also noticed a couple of drop frames (a red flash) throughout the video...sorry about these :-(

I used the original pattern, however, I've halved the mouthplate pattern and took a little bit of space from the bottom to make up for the taped area.

The Glorified Puppet Pattern doesn't have a foam structure- basically you would do the same - I recommend the elastic mouth grip and if you have big hand enlarge the pattern on a photocopy by 20-25%. If you keep the pattern the same size than you don't really have to do a mouth grip because the actual fabric "encases" your hand. Hope this helps.

wow these tutorials are really great man nice job. I do have one question, in these tutorials you use the Roly Puppet Patern but i was thinking about using the Glorified sock puppet patern for my first puppet. What are the diffrences and what would i have to do different from this tutorial in order to make such a puppet?

I find the sweat from your hand eventually will breakdown cardboard. If you cover the cardboard it prolongs the breakdown but eventually you'll have to replace it.

can we use only thin eva foam for mouth plate? I imagine a puppet head that will not deform quickly but has more free mouth movements. But I don't know the solution.

NOt sure if this helps, but once I have the mouth plate set up i brush contact cement on the plate then place the sheet of felt down and wait for it to set. Then I cut the felt from the square so I don't have to hassle with lining up cut felt, which always used to be a struggle.
