Puppies Need Exercise | Uncle Stonnie Goes on a Rant

Today Uncle Stonnie starts out talking about puppy exercise and why he thinks the trends towards restricted puppy exercise and socialization opportunities are harmful and unnatural in terms of proper canine physical and mental development.
After a while the cameraman brought to Stonnie's attention that the presentation had devolved into an emotional rant; for that we apologize. We salvaged as much of this video as we could.
We will get to work on a more professional explanation of Stonnie's positions concerning puppy exercise and socialization and its importance in relation to canine development specifically and dog training generally.

You are 100 percent right. I tell all my clients that 95 percent of behavioral problems are direct the result of lack of exercise. If you stimulate your dog's body and mind, most behavior problems melt away. Great video as always. Thanks you!

Watching other trainers I have "heard" that it is important to exercise your dogs, of course. But I have also heard that puppies should be limited on aggressive exercise because their growth plates haven't closed and that is why so many dogs have hip and knee issues? Have you had that experience?

Hello from Canada, I had no idea that this "no exercise thing" was a thing. I have always assumed if my lab isn't calm and relaxed in my house it is my fault and I haven't exercised her enough. When she was 9 weeks old we took her for her first 3 hour hike. She spent a lot of the time in a modified backpack sleeping but she also walked a fair amount of the trail. She is 2 years old now and goes on 5-6 day backpacking trips with us in the wilderness and carries her own panniers. We took ours on a hike at about 3 months! It killed him haha, but so worth it. He slept so well after and so calm and relaxed. He is 4 months old now and the daily park outings have really helped.

My position from a comment thread below: Yes, common sense. If you follow this channel much you will know, with one hundred percent certainty, that I am a staunch supporter of common sense. Let's use the common sense filter to examine your position. "Instead of sticks there are great and sad rubber and nylon toys for example." Are you saying that dogs should only be allowed to go into outdoor spaces that are free from trees, ground debris, brush, rocks, etc...? That's going to be pretty limiting from a socialization experience, no? Puppies need a chance to explore their environments in the formative stages so as to preclude a lack of environmental awareness later. The idea that dogs need to be micro managed in terms of environmental socialization and exercise is a primary driver in terms of the mental and physical imbalances that we are seeing pop up in adolescent and older dogs. This can't do attitude is literally stunting the proper development of dogs around the world. The negative externalities of such polices are astoundingly obvious. As far as not letting Border Collies play with bigger dogs, again you are making gross generalizations that leave out the most important information, which is the social development of the dogs in question. If the larger, more powerful, dogs are well socialized they will self regulate with puppies. You can see it in hundreds of videos on my channel. You can watch thousands upon thousands of dog interactions between dogs of various sizes, ages, and breeds in my videos; the truth is evident to anyone who is willing to look. As far as the nonsense that tons of owners are running their young puppies miles and miles, just stop. Very few owners can run a mile, much less miles and miles. We have an epidemic of obese dogs, not dogs that are over exercised. That's basically a fabricated claim used to appeal to emotions and make lazy people feel good about not socializing and exercising their pups. I'm not defensive at all. I'm simply pointing out the flaws in your positions. To put it bluntly, you are wrong and you are parroting a dangerous and destructive narrative. That's not me being defensive or rude, that's just me being honest. If honesty turns you off, I do not know what to tell you other that I don't really care one way or another. I'm not here to meet in the middle; I'm here to share my opinions and encourage people to learn from my perspective.

I saw something similar to this when I worked with horses. People were afraid to do just even the basic training and handling with their foals because they were worried about causing harm or damaging them. Most of the time these horses came to us as 3 and 4 year olds to be saddle broke and we'd spend a few weeks just teaching basic manners. People looked at us like we had 3 heads when we said all of our foals could be haltered, cross tied, pick up all 4 feet, load in a trailer, and could be lead through basic obstacles all by the time they were 8 months old.

I have a soft spot fortunately for working with priorly poorly socialized pups - young and old. It takes years, even a lifetime to patiently rehab social into a grown pup who was not afforded people or dog social time such as this to learn these skills. I am committed to always having a rehab dog since they otherwise have such a grim outlook in the shelter and rescue worlds - not to mention are wonderful dogs who just need patience and guidance. Thank you for pushing this crucial development in dogs, it is so heart-breaking to see how they sometimes end up otherwise.

I have a Heeler and he clearly needs a shit ton of exercise. These people saying at 4 months he should get like 20 minutes of exercise a day, come on. My pup goes absolutely bonkers if he doesn't get two long walks in a day plus a lot of fetch and general ruckus every day.

Working dogs need jobs or a ton of exercise. Same thing to them. Had to give mine short training sessions multiple times, it helps tire him out. I make my boy do tasks for 10 minutes a few times a day. Then I let him be a bird dog & clear the lake.

Same, I seen multiple videos of people saying puppies shouldn't get too much exercise. They clearly never delt with a heeler. Ours was a terror till I cave up and started running her and introduced a ball for her to push around the yard.

I agree 100% 👍 Dogs are descendents of wolves. Those "no exesise your puppies" people have to spend time watching wolf pups in the wild. I am 57 years old, raised on a 160 acre hobby farm on the edge of a 23,000 acre Wild Game Refuge, Carlos Avery Wild Game Refuge, Minnesota. I was raised on the back of a horse with all the neighbor kids and a lot of hunting dogs Golden Retrieves, Labs, Chesapeakes and German Shorthairs and a lot of puppies. I have started horses under saddle and rehabilitated horses that have developed behavioral problems. I have started and owned a BLM Mustang from Nevada. I have watched and studied the Mustang and equine behavioral science for many years. Young animals, especially, need a lot of exercise and socialization. When Stonnie teaches us about canine behavior, and his philosophy, he sounds very much like all of the Natural Horsemanship trainers that I have studied from. That is why I like and enjoy listening and learning from Stonnie so much, he makes sense 👍😊

As a big city guy the only way I can replicate this with my puppy is the dog park. I know it’s more like a cheap Chinese knockoff but it’s all I got. It’s the best way my dog can get feedback from other dogs. “ A tired dog is a good dog”

It hurts that I know these things to be true simply because my dog (almost 6 y/o English lab) is completely colourblind when dealing with other dogs. He was almost 2 years old when he came into our home, the first year of his life spent mostly in his crate and the other part of it in guidedog training, surrounded by mostly well-behaved (semi-)adult dogs. The only dogs he interacts very well with are puppies, because he lived with those too when he was in training and they don't come pre-programmed with a guidedog setting. Now fortunately he thinks every dog (and everyone) is his best friend and is completely non-aggressive, but on the other hand he doesn't recognize aggression in other dogs either, which makes me feel scared for his safety sometimes.

My Black Lab loves off leash walks. The best part is now that it is below freezing around here, a hour walk tires her out for the rest of the day. She loves exercise and loves to fetch. Like people, she is who she is, so we exercise her.

We got my gsd when he was 18 months. Basically, the story we got is that he and the husband (who got him without telling his wife) basically lived in the basement. I think he went to some form of training class because he wasn't a COMPLETE mess when we got him and he loves people. However it's very clear to me that he did not play with dogs when he was a puppy. Now he's the biggest dog in the house and he doesn't understand corrections from our other dogs - a Mal, a lab, and a small dog that's 12 years old. He's got 20lbs on the two other large dogs. He is very very rough with the girls and we have to constantly correct him for the girls because he just does not understand. He just wants to play, but the girls just aren't able give a severe enough correction to get through to him. We've had him for 3 years now and he still doesn't understand. I think if he played as a puppy, we would have a different situation with him. He does have hip problems so we also have to limit his higher impact exercise because if he goes too hard, he'll start hurting and get real grumpy. He can hike for about a mile before he's done for low impact.

Excercise reveals problems...love this. . I always have a 1 to 2 hr meet n greet before I accept any dogs into my open boarding home for dogs. It reveals so much. I once replied to an owner ' You are lazy'.( Deadpan face...mine) Fortunately the owner laughed and today she is one of my favourite customers. All of my friend's dogs that are misbehaved (most of them) do not get much if any exercise and wonder why their dogs are misbehaved... They think I am crazy with the amount of time I give my dog but thats what you sign up for when you get one! love what you say... I tired dog is a good dog. Just got my first German Shorthaired Pointer, now 12 weeks old. A walk twice a day is doing us both good. It is also a great opportunity for command training and learning hand signals and obedience amongst distractions. Wish I had youtube when I trained my first dog some 15 years ago. I would have learned as much as the puppy. I ended up with a great dog in spite of myself.

Got our first dog last year . A black Lab . She’s 10 months old now and an awesome dog . I ignored the advice to not over exercise your puppy as she has so much energy ! She sometimes goes for walks with a dog walker who has around 5 other dogs on the walk . The socialisation & learning she gets from it has definitely made her a better dog .

Spot on Stonnie!! My Jack Russell (Bandit) 16 1/2 young has such a thick coat from hanging outside he’s a nudist (no sweater). Goes out with us and let’s us know when he wants to come in. Back in his younger days when we had a pool, when he was done playing fetch he would run to pool and jump in to cool himself down. Dogs are smart and know how to regulate to weather 🐶

My boy, Buddy Nr 3, just turned one year. He's a Black American Lab. He gets daily Frisbee sessions with me, usually 30 minutes each, and four or more walks in the field. He's a hard charger with the Frisbee and sometimes I feel like he's showing off with his gymnastic moves. I keep a close eye on him and if I see any sign of instability in his landings, we stop. If I get him panting hard, he's much calmer the rest of the day. A tired Lab is a happy Lab. Fair winds and following seas.

I got a mal puppy and someone told me at 4.5 months old he shouldn't be exercised longer than. 30 a day minutes. I nearly died. Who would survive???? Threw that piece of advice in the trash and love to play with him, train him and also simply just take him out and walk him. I didn't run the pants off him sure but I always thought they have to get it out somewhere. He dug a hole and laid beside me at the campfire last night after he played plenty with the other dog. I totally agree! The 5 minute per month rule is so wrong and frustrating. Puppies have a ton of energy and the need to get out! Obviously you have to be careful, basic things like making sure your area is safe, and that if your dog is showing signs of getting really tired, you let him rest. Exercise also gives the bonus of socialization to environments/textures/smells/people and to other dogs, and it's great way to build a bond and work on your training.

This video couldn’t have been more perfectly timed!! We just got a corgi and he has so much energy! So we’ve been taking him out and running him til the wheels fall off (without pushing him of course) but I’ve come across some information say to limit exercise to 10min a day while they’re a puppy to prevent future health problems. I've been watching for about a year now...which one is River??? This was the best advice we have ever gotten, as we've always had smaller dogs. Now my son has a lab (we share!), and my daughter has a lab....they play together all the time as well as with neighboring dogs. "The best dog is a tired dog..." Words to live by!

Thank you so much for this video. We have older dogs and I was worried about getting a new puppy in the future because of all these new rules. Other trainers had me worried I would ruin the dog by taking it for a simple walk.

Great to see this, I have a 5 month old Vizsla and she just loves being out exploring and playing with other dogs. She is my first dog but the common sense approach of just watching them to see when they are tired made sense to me. I find it strange how many other dog owners seem to constantly interfere with interactions between dogs, rather than letting them figure each other out. I guess it's like helicopter parents, just never thought I would was more of a minefield than raising kids!

My carpathian shepherd is currently 11 month old and i couldn't agree more with you. Finding a group of dog he would regularly play with during is first month was the best way to exercice him and socialise him.

My mum and dad used to take me and my brother out for a half day play in a huge park every weekend, magically in the evening we’d be tired, more pliable, polite and thankful for food and even eat unpleasant veggies. Being tired as a kid or puppy is valuable. Imagine if we kept human kids inside / limited exercise due to “they don’t know how to self regulate” That’s nuts people! A kid will stop when they’re tired, so will your dog!

Just found this channel. I'm in Kentucky and I work with dogs too. I thought everyone knew puppies and dogs needed play. That's a beautiful Collie, I'd love to have one in my family!
