Experience first hand the pure joy ... or maybe the sheer exhaustion ... of getting up and feeding formula to newborn puppies.

Love the slowed down intro music it represents that tiredness of puppy feeds in the middle of the night.

No wonder puppies are so expensive.These puppies are a lot of work.No one could complain about the cost after seeing all this work.Also,it should put people of breeding that are not dedicated and only in it to make a quick buck.

awww you are doing so good for the pups and for Apple too. when we had our farm i remember these middle of the night feedings. but for me it was kittens, baby raccoons, and goats. try to sleep and have great dreams.

Apple is just so cute. She was awake and looking right at you. What temperature do you keep the heat? At least the heat by the puppies?
@chaskat3520 күн бұрын
At birth, their body temperature is about 96 F, and that's what the heating element in the whelping box is set for. Over the first month or so, that gradually raises to a normal adult dog temperature of just over 100 F. There is no need to raise the temperature of the heating element as this happens, because over those weeks the pups develop the ability to regulate their own body temperature - something they can't do at birth. I also set the space heater at 72 F, so that the ambient air doesn't chill them. Some breeders keep the temperature higher than I do, but that can create other problems, such as dehydration. In my opinion, warmer temperatures should only be used for distressed puppies whose development is so compromised that they are in danger of dying. Years ago, I had the pleasure of talking with one of the top reproduction specialists in the country. I'll never forget what he said: "I've seen more puppies killed by being cooked than by being chilled."

Yeah, I'd like to do it---once! Then I'll take staying in bed. I'm glad Charlie is so dedicated to helping those puppies thrive. I wish everyone who's thinking about breeding (to make some extra money) would watch this and see how much work and how expensive it is to breed puppies correctly. They'd soon see it isn't a cake walk and they'd be more likely to lose money than to make it.

Wonderful video! Can feel your fatigue through my iPhone screen. I suspect most dog people can relate. Does Apple get a snack at 3am, too? What a beautiful and devoted mommy❤️
@chaskat3520 күн бұрын
No snack necessary for Apple at that hour! Well, OK, maybe a small dog biscuit.

Does having to takeover the feedings for Apple affect her relationship with the puppies at all? Or do the puppies get frustrated while trying to nurse and very little is coming out? It seems like the answer is no to both questions. I just love Apple! And you guys are doing an amazing job with this very hard task. God Bless you guys!
@chaskat3519 күн бұрын
You're right - the answer to both is no. Apple is still very protective of the puppies, and doesn't mind staying with them 24/7. They also depend on her for warmth, comfort, and (for what it's worth) nursing.

How much food do you feed your 2 year old cavalier twice a day? What mixture do you feed them?
@brianbauman660620 күн бұрын
All in the previous feeding time video.
@chaskat3520 күн бұрын
It depends a lot on the number of calories in the food. Right now, I'm using Nulo Medal Series kibble - I would give a normal 2 year old 3/4 of a cup once a day, topped with a few chunks of Fresh Pet chicken flavor. Apple was getting about double that amount, to promote lactation, but because her milk production has pretty much shut down, she is now back to the normal amount of food.
