Don't just jump to assumptions because it could have been an accident. It could have very well been intentional too but don't assume all humans are evil like that. It could have been a dog that a kid tied a string to as a puppy and it got away and got lost and no one ever took a second look and it grew that way. You know what I mean? Accidents do happen.
