This is a great performance, and the instrumental introduction sounds incredibly modern and rich. The music written by Monteverdi sometimes sounds more creative and up to date than most of the music composed nowadays. It fits the harmonies we "modern people" like and need to hear in a great way.

Krummhorn?! That's a cornett/cornetto -- a wooden horn with a cup mouthpiece (like a trumpet) that was popular in the early baroque. Not even remotely similar in either sound or construction to a krummhorn, which is a capped double-reed instrument from the Renaissance with a *very* reedy and nasal tone (think: kazoo). I believe the crumhorn had completely fallen out of use before this piece was even composed.

Splendido ! Superbi ! Straordinari! I had the pleasure of hearing L'arpeggiata last Friday at Carnegie Hall (Zankel) It was transformative. Philippe was incredible, pitch perfect and brilliantly effective in Ohime ch'io cado, Doron controls and creates with the cornetto nero as if he were Wynton Marsalis AND John Coltrane, Veronika was stunning - musically and in every way. Christina's concept for Monteverdi is visionary. Bravi !

bit.ly/2cFSzM8 To the contrary, the whole arrangement and in particular the intro is, IMHO, absolutely gigantically perfectly incredibly fantastically tremendously good. This music was written in 1643, and through this fantastic arrangement, Christina Pluhar makes this music sound like something Mark Knopfler or Eric Clapton would have written. I am an extremely classical person, but this arrangement is, IMHO, just perfect.
