Typical HD dealership doesn't think to install new plugs and plug wires change fuel filter and lines do a 3 hole oil service before giving you a 50 year old bike. Service departments suck.

Most authorized dealerships won’t work on bikes that old. Even if the old owner works there, he may not be able to work on the bike or even order parts for a bike that old. Not saying it’s right, just facts.

My father always told me if you buy a new Harley the only thing they need is a new Cam put in! My father built bikes all my life and then after he got to old he turned around and bought a Harley 3 Three wheeler. But he rode on 2 wheels up until he was in his seventys and he he bought the 3 Wheeler a couple of yrs before he passed. I love the old shovel head. I've probably got some parts around here. I've one frame and gas tanks and all kinds of stuff. I got a 1990 Sportster with forward control and fat Bob tanks on it. Ive had it 4 or 5 yrs now. But I hope you have a good and safe ride!

As someone that started out on shovelheads you have to carry tools and you have to know how to work on your bike.90% percent of the people riding Harleys today wouldn't be riding them if there only option was a shovelhead. Now days everyone and there mother ride Harleys and back in the day it wasn't like that.

Just a tip….run a 60w racing oil in shovel head. It will keep it cooled down better. Amsoil racing 60w is a good choice. And just for those who don’t know yes you can run a racing oil for old V8 engines in Harley’s and they will run cooler and quieter than they do with v twin motorcycle oil. They lubricate better and don’t have to worry about a clutch slipping. But don’t use it in the primary ! I use 20w-50 racing oil in my twin cams. It makes a noticeable difference.

I aways use 70 wate oil it's getting hard to find but it's worth it
@JohnnyRebKy
@JohnnyRebKy Ай бұрын
@@ronwhite1642 well it’s really not the weight that makes the difference. Motorcycle or “ v twin” oil is actually a compromise. Most people don’t understand that. It’s designed to ALLOW a certain amount of friction to occur so the clutch won’t slip on motorcycle that shares engine oil with the clutch in one unit. That’s why you can’t use auto oil because it lubes it TO WELL and the clutch will slip. But on a big twin Harley the engine doesn’t share oil with a clutch so you can run a good automotive oil in them that lubes the engine at full potential. I’ve done it for years. You notice it runs cooler and the ticking on top end you normally hear goes away. It had additives that motorcycle oils have removed I suggest racing oil though because it contains high zinc and is designed for old v8 engines which works perfect in a harley engine. Less friction less heat less noise

Just watching you 2 ride these beautiful bikes took me back to my 2 trips to Sturgis when I was in the Navy. 1 from San Diego,California and the other from Bremerton,Washington and that was in the early to mid 90's. I now only have my 98 Fatboy EVO 1340 but am looking at getting another shovel just to go get my coffee with and putt around on. Nothing like the older bikes. They have so much soul and character to them. I envy you both in doing this trip. Safe travels and keep the rubber on the road

When you said US62 I was wondering if I would see my hometown and there you were cruising right down Main Street! If you ate at Watts (you were sitting in their parking lot) and had some Velvet ice cream, then you have experienced the best Utica has to offer. An old Easyriders magazine recommended Bosch Platinum plugs for Panheads and I always ran those, but I don't know if that translates into Shovelhead or not. Always carry spares. And better to run a little rich on a roadtrip and replace fouled plugs than run too lean for a long time and burn things up. Your friend is getting an education on why they started chopping them and extending the front forks in the first place-they sit too low stock and drag things in the twisties. Your bike didn't have that problem Looks like a great time. Thanks for sharing it with us.

And don't beleive the hype about overheating unless you live in Texas Arizona😂😂😂 everything overheats there!😂😂😂 in my experience shovels are awesome if you treat em right. Troubleheads! LOL I got my first Harley in 1976. The world moved at a slower pace back then. The 4 speed transmission kept us at 60 to 70 MPH but sticking to the back roads cruising at 55 to 60 was the sweat spot. Back in those days you had to lean how to work on your bike. If the battery isn't getting a charge, first check the pluck from the rectifier to the stator to make sure it is plugged in good. They can work their way out. If it is plugged in solid then pull the lug and check voltage from the stator. If no voltage then bad stator and not an easy on the road fix. If it is putting out 50 or so volts (AC) then you have a bad rectifier. Easy fix if you can find a replacement. The thing about Shovels is, they are very basic and easy to learn how to repair. One of the nice things about having a slow bike is you get to see things that you normally would go wizzing past. Smell the roses as it were. You also will be more inclined to make stops that you normally wouldn't. And as you found, sticking to the back road two lanes you discover "real" America. I know you've ridden all over the country but I hope you do more rides on this bike and see some things you have not experienced before.

My first HD was a '98 Dyna Wide Glide, black. To me, your old Shovelhead could have been what they modeled the Wide Glide from. Stretched, rear side shocks, mini ape bars, chromed battery box. Not the springer stuff of course, but at a glance they seem similar. Enjoyed your tour.

Plugs automatically replaced, and a spare pair for the road on shovels. But for 5K I wouldn't bitch--I'm sure you had a set with you anyway. She's a beauty and a runner. At 72 I will never replace the feel of a shovelhead in my mind (had several new from 1999)--now I finally have someone who matters agree with me. Would love to find a realistic shovel to this day. Peace

Oil leaking in some old shovels could be because the oil breather gear filter could be plugged up and causes the seals on the motor to leak oil.

Man, brings back great memories of my first Harley at 18 years old. A used, 1975 FX (kick start only) Shovelhead. Loved that bike and miss it to this day. You get to know those Shovels real well as you need to check them over before each ride. You'll learn. One thing, man when you're riding and everything is just working perfect with it, stand by to stand by, somethings going to break. Enjoy those Shovels. Wish I had my old 75 to have a place beside my 02 FLH and 24 Road Glide.

I went into a Harley dealership when I was a kid. 1978 or 79. First First thing I noticed was the cookie sheets under all the bikes to catch the leaking oil. AMF almost killed Harley. So glad Willie G and the crew finally got it back.

I'm 61 now, and my first big twin was 78 FLH still have it to this day. Though it's unrecognizable as a flh, many mods and changes throughout the years. I also have a 1982 FLT (no fairing or tour pack) lowered and 16" apes. My other two bikes are a 91 springer softtail and a 92 electraglide ultra classic. For the most part, they are easy to work on and have been very reliable as long as you respect and take care of them. I'm originally from Missouri and still consider it my home.

So that dealer doesn't seem to care about how those bikes will run however they sure did make them look good on the outside. You know some people like to ride their bikes without stoping multiple times each day to work on them

All Harleys leaked oil and so did the British bikes. It was the Japanese bikes that didn't leak oil and they set the bar for better quality and reliability .. Back in 1978-79 I had a 1976 Yamaha RD-400-C 400 CC's and it total embarrassed HD's and ate them for lunch ..It ran souper smooth too .

True. As the saying goes, if it is not leaking oil, it is out of oil. Until Japanese appeared into the market and forced Brit and American bikes to get their shit together.
