Patents only last 20 years. Anyone could make this now. I'd love to see a combination of this, with the ditech stratified charge direct injection and a modern version of Suzuki SuperLube which injected oil directly into the main bearings, then through oilways drilled into the crank to the big end bearings, then through oilways drilled in the conrod, into the little end bearing. Without the fuel washing away the oil inside the crankcase, oil consumption is dramatically reduced, with oil tank fills only needed at a major service.

If you the put the Paris Dakar XR650R and the EXP-2 side by side you can clearly see where the big xr got its styling from and frame ergonomics from? So all that design and manufacturing didn’t go to waste in the end! Because Honda still ended up with a desert racing weapon that dominated the baja rallies….. and I believe if they hadn’t of changed the engine size regulations in the Dakar rally it would of been a formidable competitor to other teams? Fantastic video 👍

Dude, you made my day! And you did your homework well, this I can confirm, because Yoichi Ishibashi is a close friend of mine and I was partly kind of involved in this project. I almost got a job as monitor-rider for the EXP-2 as Yoichi suggested me at this time when I was living in Japan. Unfortunately, Honda decided against me. As you mentioned, the project was too late and it was killed due to various reasons. Cost, strict laws and - most of all - Honda´s decision to quite 2-strokes once and for all. Yoichi told me, that he´d quit if they really go for it. In the end, he carried on for a couple of more years and developed the 1000cc and later the 800cc V-engines for moto-GP. But his heart was still with the 2-strokes. At the time I was in Japan, he once visited me and gave me a prototype cylinder for my CRM250 (non-AR). Even that cylinder made the engine running very smooth and more torquee. Later, I got the derivate of the EXP-2, the CRM250AR. And that was a REAL revelation! I almost puffed out no fumes at all, produced a healthy and torquee 40hps and was incredible moderate in oil and fuel consumption. Image that: with only 1L of oil, I could run over 1000kms! Later, I imported these machines to Germany but apparently nobody understood or appreciated the real value of this technical gem. I will forward your excellent video to Yoichi and I´m sure he´ll like it. Thanks again for your good work man! Best regards from Germany.

I'm quite sure a modern 300 2 stroke could finish Dakar. Sure it needs all the same upgrades as a 4 stroke. But the Dakar being 8000'ish km of open ground makes it ''easy'' work for a 2 stroke engine. I can do these km's on 1 piston in a combo of MX, Enduro, Hard-Enduro and Cross-Country. Surely a raceprepped bike can do that at high speeds and starting maybe 5 times a day. 14 days of say 10 hours make 140 hours of engine time. My piston lives in there for 166 hours now and still going strong. If teams are allowed to do piston changes (wich take an amature about 1 hour, raceteam 20 minutes?) i see no problem at all. Also when tuned specifically for high speed, high RPM output one could tune it very narrow and very efficiënt. In my riding it's not uncommon that my 2 stroke uses less fuel than the 4 strokes.

Direct fuel injection is the next thing that will bring back the two stroke, only air is in the bottom end and transfere ports , no fuel is added until just before TDC , no fuel out exhaust port ! Kawasaki future projects has a KX550 T two stroke motor up and running based on the 2004 KX 500 motor and so does Suzuki with its direct injection RM 520 T two stroke ! Better emissions than four strokes and one tenth of the moving parts ! Give Kawasaki and Suzuki 2 or 3 more years and the two stroke is back !
@robertrishel36852 ай бұрын
I love the irony of Honda continuing to experiment with a two stroke, given that they were always pushing for fourstroke engines. Just to be clear, two strokes were NEVER “outlawed” in the US. Especially for off road use. They may have been out regulated, and they certainly were outpoliticked, but never out lawed. Manufacturers made the choice to stop importing them into the US, as keeping up with absurd US emission laws became more and more onerous.

A very nice summation of the system, thank you. I started riding 2 strokes, desert enduros. and RD-400, and 2stroles are deserving of a revitalization, CARB be damned. The emission nazis in California will not last, as Ca won't last, it's a bunch of liberal control freaks that will self destruct soon enough. I am a retired Master Mechanic, made my living working for dealers and several independent shops, and I really like your description of this system, I really ate that up. The older 2 strokes that were legal can still be run, providing they survived, I hope to get a 250 or bigger, and take it easy tooling around the hills around here. That RD really ruined me, it's why I am disabled, but I still have the 2 stroke fever.

I own a CRM250AR and love it. I also went to see the EXP-2. Let me share how ARC feels. AR combustion kicks in when you're running the engine right before it hits the pipe at around half throttle. When the computer determines that the conditions are suited for ARC, a solenoid clicks and the engine makes a different sound. You'll notice an increase in torque and the throttle becomes less responsive. It feels and actually is very lean. The top-end and low-end feels just like a normal 2-stroke. I know a few who owned the CRM250AR and we all agree that the ARC technology in not fully matured. The way that ARC kicked in and out was not smooth and felt like a switch got suddenly flipped. We all feel that if Honda could have kept development going on for another 10 years or so, it could have changed the whole 2-stroke game. When the CRM250AR came out, Honda already knew they could only sell it until 1999. This is because there was a new regulation that killed 2-strokes in Japan that started in 1999. I'm generally not a honda fan, huge respect on how Honda was determined to put this technology into production even though they knew it's inevitable daath. These bikes are really hard to maintain today and I've only seen a couple in the streets in Japan in the past 5 years. I don't usually comment, but this video was a bit personal. Thanks, it was great!

NO servicing ( oil changes! And a two stroke engine does not mind being tipped over where as a four stroke tipped over while running NO lube!! I personally think that the ARC program CAN be rejuvenated in racing development as some of the F1 development teams have reconsidered 2 stroke development again. I believe Audi have done an experimental 2 stroke Le Mans style of car? I think that Audi put this development on the back burner because they had such great success with their inverted head designed diesel V6 turbo with the turbo mounted central in the V of the motor with very very short equal length exhaust runners and dual EFI throttle bodies on the outside banks of the heads. I think the same development team was used for both prototypes and I think that Audi also abandoned the idea still due to emissions even though the engine wasn't burning oil it was still doing 2 x the combustion and diesels at the time has far less restrictions. The idea audi came up with would mean the new 2 stroke engine wouldn't burn the oil, the oil would be injected using oil squirters in modern turbo charged engines like the Nissan SR20. This would mean that for every revolution a mist of fine synthetic oil could be sprayed up under the piston onto the bore and under the piston skirt so that the rings could be lubricated sufficiently. I think that with a rotary valve or a electronically controlled (actuated) valve similar to the one Honda created could improve upon the power output using a turbo charger at the end of the stinger pipe. Many Snow mobile guys are turbo charging their conventional 2 strokes already, but having the valve preventing unborn mixture being pushed through the combustion chamber under boost. Having the ability to close the exhaust port allows the engine accept boost in the most normalised way? Turbo charging would definitely make up for any reduced performed of the ARC system (in comparison to stock 2 stroke). I think the combining both of these developments could revive the 2 stroke era again. Here's hoping the world wakes up and realises we are being scammed into thinking that combustion engines are melting the polar ice caps! It's the sun dammit! I know because I'm an environmental scientist. Burn all the fuels!!!!

I always thought running a two stroke on alcohol and just normal two stroke oil would have to be cleaner than a gasoline four stroke but never got around to trying it

2 stroke innovation will continue. Look at mountain sleds, 850 twins with a turbo making 185 hp stock. Run them pinned all day.

I nearly bought a CRM, but no salesman came to sell me one, so I walked out and bought an RMX instead.

So how does this differ then the exhaust valve’s in snowmobile engines in the 80’s?
@KRANKiTАй бұрын
So... I'm not exactly sure on the snowmobiles, but the exhaust valve isn't the innovation here. It's just part of the innovative system. Having that valve was not new, but the way it was used was new.

I own a Honda CRM250AR. It has a similar engine - ARC at low RPM

Nowadays there is BIODEGRADABLE OIL FOR MIXING, therefore 2T are way more CLEANER.

I'm not at all surprised that Honda scrapped it, because it was lightweight, good power to weight ratio and most of all new and exciting technology. Totally against everything that Honda offroad bikes stands for. No, let's go back to selling 250 kg twins and thumpers from the 80's. That's good enough.

2 strokes are the best for motorcycle, and Honda's self boycott was a pain to watch.

Incorrect. Two strokes are better for racing. Four stroke engines are exceedingly more practical for use on the street. The reason two-stroke street bikes didn’t sell in the United States is people who didn’t like the way they sounded. In the United States, particularly, a nation with a huge car culture, they didn’t like the sound of two-stroke engines. And the four stroke engine was way more advanced and refined for every day use. The manufacturers did extended research and what they found is street riders preferred four stroke engines.

@@TheBlueDogMan Two strokes are better for racing. they are cheaper and easier to work on. Plus they have more power for the same size engine. That is why the AMA will not let 250 two strokes race against 250 four strokes.

TPI could render this obsolete. Sure TPI wasn't really good in enduro since it lacked proper fuelling in the lowest of RPM making it harder to ride and more funrable to seizure as an Hard-Enduro bike (wich it was marketed for), that's why TBI was invented. However TPI at high RPM doesn't loose nearly as much fuel mixture as a carb, making it easy to pass regulations. Also works really well on mid to high RPM's. Guess where Rally bikes live...?

You should question.. Why hasn't honda updated the xr650???

Just add adblue to the 2 stroke and issue resolved.
