While visiting my daughter in Halifax, I heard about 'Come From Away'. I had seen the wonderful musical Anne of Green Gables playing in Charlottetown while we holidayed in PEI andin telling her neighbor about this, Come From Away was mentioned. 'If that ever comes West, make sure you go see it. You will laugh, you will cry. It is amazing!!'

This is so interesting to hear. I love hearing "back stories" And sneaking in a "Thank you" in an ABC broadcast was neat. Sad that when then president, George Bush, had the wonderful 9/11 National Prayer Service 2001, he forgot Canada in the "Thank you". He thanked every country but us. And from wikipedia: "The actual number of diverted aircraft and passengers varies from each source. Transport Canada said over 33,000 passengers on 224 flights arrived in Canada, whereas Nav Canada gave a total of 239 flights. According to Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, the number of flights was between 225 and 250 and the number of passengers was between 30,000 and 45,000." and Bush forgot us.😥

That’s how it’s pronounced there, or Newfanland. Like Toronto is pronounced more like Torono or Torona, which the t dropped.

The pronunciation of the word "Newfoundland" has always been troublesome for those who (literally) "Come From Away"; that is, someone who comes to our province from somewhere far away. As a Newfoundlander, may I offer two suggestions to help remember how we pronounce it. First, the cadence of the word is much like the word "understand". Try to remember that the last syllable is pronounced like the last syllable in Disneyland! (You wouldn't say Dis-ney-lund or Dis-ney-lind, would you?) Try rhyming it as "Understand Newfoundland"! So, the pronunciation sounds like "Noof-end-LAND." I hope that helps. 😊

@@elaineandjohn9599 New- Found- Land ... people simply pronounce it the way its spelled, how couldnt ya, right? Its actually quite straight to the point, since it actually was named as how the Vikings and earliest Natives saw it. But, Canadian accents vary A LOT. You wont find one Canadian that sounds the same that are from a different province or even just from a different town. Newfoundlanders though, jeeze you cant seem to miss our accent, people have said to me for years when I've been up away that I sound like im Irish or something .. but not quite. Then I'd prolly say "Oh, yes by!" and they'd pin me for a Newfoundlander. Lol... I'd always be a tad confused cause the mainlanders Canadian accents are way more pronounced than mine. I've never in me life said "about" like "aboot" like people from BC do... Never has milk in a bag or even liked maple syrup. Never cared for the word "Aye" or whatever... I spose it cause were not REALLY Canadians. We only joined Canada out of desperation in 1949. The UK hung us out to dry and once our soliders were passed away in WW1 & WW2 and our mine dried up they turned their prudent backs on us in our time of need... we lost generations for the war efforts and when it was over we were tossed back to sea and had no choice but to join Canada for our survival. I am so happy to be a Canadian, or kind of one, every Newfoundlander will tell you the same thing... were Newfoundlanders, before were Canadians. And thank goodness cause the English hurt us so bad even though we sacrificed thousands to protect them and in the end they stabbed us in the back. Newfies will never forget that, and were proud to have won the war but are even prouder to be Canadian and would never of wanted to be English pansies. Anyway, another example is how we says Toronto... "Ter-on-toe"!! haha not "Tou-ron-to" the way mainlanders do... I just think the reason that Canada speaks so alike BESIDES us is the thing... its all good though 🤩 Newfoundland and Labradorians are definitly the ones with the hardened accents lol you might come across a Baymen that says "Newfundland" and then a Townie that says "Newfinland"... Or how I say it is kinda like "Newfunland" ... I know its confusing but thats how she goes! 🤗
