I'm from Japan and studied historical music and music ethnology in Cologne/Germany and The Hague/Netherlands.
Now I live at the border between Germany and France.
- Oud & Lute - King of Instruments -
The origin of the oud belongs to the ancient times and similar instruments were used by the Babylonian and ancient Egyptian. Until today, oud is played as the "king of instruments" in Arabic culture.
The oud found his way to Europe in medieval times and it became "lute". During the Renaissance the lute was also regarded as the "king of instruments".

@@MrDAVEDIX I believe the different notation system. In the oriental world, like turkey, old greek traditional music and byzantine music, persia etc there are distances between notes that fall in between the notes of the western system. Search for maqam! Have a nice day.

@@MrDAVEDIX westerners have this particular way of thinking arabic music as the phrygian mode because thats what is presented through media. In reality its just one maqam (lets simplify it and call it a scale) of the 50 maqams all depicting different emotions.

I do believe the Lute was inspired greatly by the oud. It does seem to come about shortly after the first crusade.

Hello, Nao! I have never heard the oud played this way. I am brimming with tears as I listen and take some time to meditate. I work from home and my intention was to just put on something nice in the background.... but I just had to stop and just be with this music. This is so beautiful and moving. I am also a musician (acoustic guitar is my main string instrument) as well as a singer/songwriter. I'd love to learn how to play the oud. Thank you for that inspiration!
