Excellent! 👏👏Very informative. Presented in an interesting manner. Recently, we used 4:3 aspect ratio (which is generally seen as an 'old' method) in our latest music video. It has gained 4 lakh views in two weeks - and it was appreciated by renowned artists from the Malayalm film industry, including Mohanlal and Mammootty. One of the areas where we faced questions and criticism from some viewers was the usage of 4:3. Many wondered why we didn't go for 16:9, the preferred ratio for KZbin. Some people even 'advised' us to be careful next time. But, the irony was that - it was after pretty long discussions and deliberation that we concluded on 4:3. We felt the best ratio for our story, the kind of emotions we we wanted to bring in, was 4:3. We wanted to present the 'boxed' life of a farmer who stays alone in a scenic hillside village. I watched this video to see if I can correct the distortions on videos (from old Ayngaran DVDs to recent Utube) I see. I am one of the first few researchers in the DSP (Digital signal processing) leading to digital coding of speech, music, video etc. I used to buy the DVDs (when they were really original, good quality - 1990's), pull out the digital song chapters as digital files (for a collection of video songs) as well as extract the songs encoded in AC3 format and convert them to MP3 format as audio collections; all done digitally on a PC so that no more distortion is introduced; in fact, some DVDs had even multiple audio tracks and it was fun to get different language versions. But most of the folks who converted the movies to DVDs did not have much knowledge about the AR and never made an attempt to reconcile the AR of the original movies in an analog tape (or later as digital files) to the only two physical TV formats for home TV viewing (4:3 and 16:9). To do this exactly, one needs to know the source or the original recording AR of each movie so that proper transformation to TV viewing (by expanding and cropping or just adding black horizontal or vertical rows). And it looks like AR ratios get changed in a movie itself. So, what are the ratios historically used in Tamil movies?
