IRL, the Jersey Mob, the DeCavalcante Family was pretty much a glorified crew as they only had a total of about 60 members compared to an average of around 200 per NY family. However, the NJ family, though small, brought in more money than any NY family due to all the harbor, shipping, and sanitation contracts plus they controlled 90% of all construction in both NJ & NY. The actual equivalent of the Luppertazzi Family are the Gambino's as it was the Gambino's who worked directly with the NJ DeCavalcante Family.

Being smaller than a NY family doesn’t make them a glorified crew. Nationally speaking, 60 made members is still a big family. It’s actually New York that is unusual for having such large families.

Not sure I agree with this. What’s the logic here. Without David chase and James gandolfini there would be no sopranos Henry hill was a stool pigeon, a coke head rat. Deniros character played a meth head Who died in prison broke with no friends. No one came to see him. I know this first hand I know the nurse that watched him die. He had one person there. A aunt or great aunt who was like 105 years old. Both not full blood Italian. Both really just bad people. Lufthansa was impressive. I will give credit where it’s due. And they did run that airport like a fine tuned machine.

I also always thought the Lupertazzis were losely based on the Lucchese family, which would make them the 3rd or 4th strongest family. Definitely stronger than the Colombos, and also bigger than the DiMeo/Soprano family which was inspired by the actual Jersey based Cosa Nostra organization, the Decavalcante family.

I always took the Soprano Family to be based on Families like the Magaddino Family that ran WNY. The Magaddinos were associated with the Bonanno family as their required 5 Families association, but were powerful enough both before and after the Commission to be allowed to operate quasi-independently as The Sopranos mostly do. They even represented themselves at Appalachin. Good point on the real Five Families being rattled off though...just bad continuity I take it.

That's what I assume Since they occasionally call the DeMeos the sopranos
@DestructionOfRome
@DestructionOfRome 2 жыл бұрын
I think how it can be explained is they informally refer to the families by their current leadership. Most of the characters referenced either died, got locked up, or stepped down before the series took place. In universe there was a change in some of the histories of the five families, but they’re still the same families.
@thedoveston6781
@thedoveston6781 6 ай бұрын
This was actually the formal arrangement until the Kefauver Hearings. Genovese soldier Joe Valachi testified before Congress as to the structure of the American Mafia. He was only a Genovese soldier because the boss at the time happened to be Vito Genovese. They'd previously been known as the Morello, Terranova, Morello (again), Masseria, Luciano, Genovese, Costello, and then finally Genovese. In the televised report before Congress, the world heard the names of the various families for the first time. It wasn't actually made clear that the families were generally named after the current boss, and people just assumed they were always called that. In fact the only family that was always known by the same name were the Bonannos, because Joe Bonanno had been boss since the family was officially named, and the names stuck after they were revealed to the public.

I used to think the Lupertazzis were the Sopranos universe equivalent of the Gambino Family given how large and powerful they were, plus the parallels between Carlo Gambino and Carmine Lupertazzi. I chalked up the references to the Five Families in Season 1 as "early installment weirdness" but then we get the references in the later seasons to guys like Colombo and Bonanno and now that I think about it, I'll go with the idea that New York City has Six Families in The Sopranos universe instead of the Five Families in our universe. Still doesn't make any sense, but eh, I'll roll with it.

My guess is they are based on one of the 5 families but the producers didn’t want to use the real names because they still exist. when they speak of multiple bosses in family he's speaking about a "front boss" basically a decoy like fat Tony with the genovese

I wonder if anyone in the family that the Lupertazzi is baded on did 20 years in the can, at least that's how long I think Phil did, he didn't mention it a lot.

Possible he became boss of a family but didn't get the official name change until later. I'd imagine that would be a vote of respect by others vs a guy renaming it after himself.

Gambinos. Tony says they have 200 soldiers in the family so that narrows it down to Gambino or Genovese....but also Agent Harris describes Tony's problem being "with Brooklyn" which is much more Gambino territory than Genovese

He says 100, which to me narrows it down to the other 3. Lucheese is my guess. Big in Jersey.

This whole thing is a good example of GRRM's idea of writers as "gardeners" or "architects" with the Sopranos writers clearly being the former. That is they never planned out a whole universe from the get go, rather they just let it evolve over the course of the show (see other examples like how they reconed Feech La Mana etc) kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5ymdZisn7Z8idk

I feel like even in sopranos era someone could manage being consigliere from inside with enough soldiers.

Nice video. Junior asks Carmine about his Rico trial in season four. It’s possible carmine wasn’t mentioned in the season one final by the prosecutor because he was trail at the point.

It's an alternate time line in a multiverse that splits off at some point in the 90's. That's why the other real life families still exist and are mentioned in the show. Ask Dr. Strange.
