It's the little things, like piloting your own aircraft to a proximity of your own house you built to flip the lights you installed on your own house and turn your lights on digitally --- The little things! Way to go, guys! Well done! Thanks for the video!

I’ve been using the Kasa TP-Link system in our home for several years and find it useful and reliable for several different applications. The first time setup wasn’t obvious...unless you read the instructions. Please don’t make it seem more difficult than the reality, unless you want to boost video time. Just my 2 cents. Keep the change! Oh, I’ve never had a failure with any of the components. Kasa also sells an excellent video camera for monitoring the outdoors.

So glad you shared the progress. No audio issues with the video. Love the almost electrified rain gauge (aka carriage light). 😂 I've done the same thing too in a hurry so I'm glad you caught it before it bit you went overboard. Technology, makes things complicated.

I like the Leviton Smart Decora smart switches over the tp-link. The Leviton will operate like a regular switch without having to be configured with the app first. Also if you exterior lights are on a smart switch, the dusk sensor at the light is useless. The smart switch can turn the light on from dusk to dawn, at least the Leviton versions can.

I actually have one of those dusk to dawn, or rather, sunrise to sunset switches for my front door, Took me a while to install it as I had to replace the too shallow metal box that was installed in the mid 80's when that portion of the house was built (it was originally from 1908 as a 1 bed, 1 bath house, but not a 3 bed, one bath but still small house, LOL). At least it acts like a regular switch, just that it actually activates a relay inside, but a normal switch otherwise.

Hey Jesse... You will need an extension ring on that jbox for your light, you are far from the within 1/4" from the burnable finished surface. Or else: "We failed our electrical inspection again?!?"
@DavePR
@DavePR 5 жыл бұрын
All that is needed is to pull the box out of the osb and install the box into the extra wood plate. There would be full coverage of the burnable surface at that time.

I hope you have in mind that there are some security issues with wifi based switches and bulbs. For example: Some wi-fi bulbs can be used as a network entrypoint from the internet. If somebody does that it can track all your wi-fi data without you ever knowing. To circumvent that you should stop ALL network traffic from the internet to your bulb or switch and make yourself a recurring reminder where you check for updates and enable it for the updates. If you still want the functionality to turn them on over the internet you should install an accespoint to host a secondary wi-fi for only your IOT devices.

Telling Aleysa she’s a grandma for pointing phone towards lights is like flying over house and accessing your phone app to see if light works. Does that make you a grandpa? Keep on going guys....

Continuity error @21:16 😉😃 The light above the door is already installed.... Question : Was this really wifi, so directly from plane to your router or (what I think) did it work over internet and you had to open a port (portforwarding) on your router?
@oscarr7754
@oscarr7754 5 жыл бұрын
This is done via the internet. However port forwarding is not necessary. both the light switch and the app talk to a server, (Kasa) to eliminate the need of the app directly connecting to the switch.

Very cool about turning the lights on from the plane. Must be a bit of delay from cellular to the internet to your intranet. My niece and her husband recently bought a home that has a lot of network-accessible features. It even has a wall-mounted table to control nearly everything from heating and cooling and home security.

You should setup a test stand with all of the equipment and play around with it. Best way to learn! Screwing up electrical leads to electrocution or fires. Other thing to note is, consider getting a heat recovery ventilation system since you have a good tight house. Low oxygen will screw with your brain.

I still would have recommended a switch that uses either the Zigbee or Z-wave standard that way you're not reliant on a single company and/or app to use the switch. Sure going this route requires a hub, but if the company of the hub stops support, you can buy a different hub to keep your lights working.

The Kasa switch will work as a normal switch without setup or wifi working. Think the wiring, the photocell and the Kasa indicator light (That it is on when the switch is actually turned off) confused matters. Doing a good job and learning as you go, keep it up.

Also it’s interesting using the power monitor function to see how much things use and if they are actually on or not.

The reason the light is dim is because you have them wired in series instead of parallel. The way you have them if one bulb burns out all of your lights will be off.
@Mark-ff9en

I may be wrong but the outlets are wired in series so if a light burned out the rest would work.
@josephbogucki5579

@@Mark-ff9en A burned out bulb is going to break the chain and the lights will all go out. This is the same thing as when the first light wouldn't go on without the others being installed. Also, shown by the dim light because the others are a resistance in the line. I had this same problem with the lights on both sides of my garage door when we moved in and the electrician had mistakenly wired them this way.

Well I wouldn't be concerned if lights wouldn't turn on from the plane. But. You connected your wifi network via your "smart" switch to some random server and now you created potential backdoor for hackers to come in. I know I sound a bit paranoid, but everything that connects to some server that you can then manage with your phone app represents security risk. / My opinion and 5 cents.

As a lot of routers allow multiple wifi names (for guest, etc.) When I set them up, I set one wifi name as "Automation" with its own password. Then when the user sells their house, they tell the new owners to setup a wifi name and IP range the same and they won't have to reconfigure everything.

If he was correct in needing to short (wirenut together) the wires in the boxes without lights to get the first fixture to light when it was the one directly connected to the power from the switch, then that would indicate that he wired them in series. Instead, I think that was a mistake on his part while troubleshooting when the issue was the unconfigured smart switch. If they are actually in series, then odds are the LED power supplies are just adjusting to handle it. In that case, things might get interesting when all the lights are connected.

Motion/day/night works independently of the "smart switch". Most motion/day/night sensor fixtures can be turned on without movement or without darkness, by turning the switch on and off twice within 5-10 seconds. That type "smart switch" does not matter how close your cell phone is to the switch ! It sends a "data" packets over the cell phone network that then connect to a cell phone/WiFi adapter in the house which send send a wireless message to the switch. You could be across the country and do the same thing. The switch should do the reverse and send a message that the lights are in fact on, but that did not seem to work that way.

Hi Jessie, Well done sorting out that light. If you want some finish that will seal the wood but not change the colour of the wood, use water-based polyurethane. You can get small tins of this and it protects the wood for years to come, the tin I have tells me 6 years on an outside surface. See you are getting better at this already, you put the second light on the correct way up.

The R value of air pockets is the same as closed cell foam. It doesn't matter if you have hollow voids in the foam as long as they are no cracks for drafts to blow through. Following this logic, a squirt of foam down the chase once the wires are installed will be more effective than filling in the whole space behind the boxes. I'd fill in behind the outside boxes tho, just to keep the bugs out.
