Fire Safety, I don’t see where you have a fire separation between your garage and your living space. You should have two layers of sheet rock on the garage ceiling and the stairwell before you take occupancy. Also, the door for the stairs should be fire rated with a closer installed. You should not store any flammable liquid or chain saws in your garage until this is complete. As I see it, your upstairs living space has only one exit and this is close to the stairway. I know your beautiful house is not done yet but please don’t put your beautiful family at risk. I’m not criticizing, I do this for a living. You guys are the greatest!

There's a reason that an electrician's apprenticeship is 8,000 hours and about 600 classroom hours before they can even test to see if they can do the work. Think about that for a minute. Also does your home owners insurance sign off on you wiring it

Why do you shut the whole power off? You should run all the wiring and hook up the circuit breaker than set it into the main box with circuit breaker in the off position than flip the breaker without shutting down all the power. I am scared to death of electricity but as I know, there is no power until the circuit is finished when you flip the circuit breaker on. You are doing 20 times to much work.

If all you are going to do in your garage is park cars, you have too many outlets. If you want to have a shop or several different types of work area and want to store and charge tools, you don't have enough and they are in the wrong places. Don't ask me what the right number of outlets is or where they should be placed. I got my dream garage 23 years ago with room for four cars or two and a nice shop with room for gardening stuff, and even big power tools. 12 inside outlets and I have nowhere to put anymore bike, tool, yard tool, etc battery chargers.

The only concern I have is, that there might be to many outlets in one circuit. Check if there is a regulatio about the nominal power to calculate with the circuits (i.e. 200 Watt per outlet), that way you can simply calculate how many outlets you can have in a circuit. Another concern is, if there is a regulation on how many outlets you can put in a chain. There might be a restriction on that too.
@stephensaines7100
@stephensaines7100 5 жыл бұрын
There certainly are regulations. And not just on the number of duplex outlets (nominally ten, depending on a number of factors and the jurisdiction), but what also comes into play is the number of *splices*! Again, local jurisdictions may vary, but none will be far off of the ten. 12 duplex is the max I'm aware of for 20A circuits.

When I built my house ... I went every 4' on my walls for outlets... I added a box for cable /TV and phone hook ups on the 6' ... I had a under stair brain center .. all my security two wire's went there and all my TV wires ended there upstairs in my master bed closet had a box for total home phone patches ... If you install a deep fiberglass "Roman" tub be sure to wrap it in insulation on the underside, it keeps the water warmer longer if ya do ... Loved having more outlets once in the house loved having phone / sterio speaker connections and Multiple TV signals all available on every wall it's nice .. at the time we were young not much in furnishings ..I wasn't sure what and or where "things" would end up on walls .. so having multiple outlets for support long term worked out very well and it wasn't gaudy looking ... Tables chairs cabinets shelves and cradenzas could move with out a ton of wires showing ... Now days with hung flat screen TV's power and signal boxes up high mid wall or above keep more wires out of view also ... Things to keep in mind as you lay out the upstairs ..love from Phoenix Ed writes..

no problem with lots of outlets, just to much load! In the UK (my country) we use a ring main. Where we run a cable in and out from each outlet which then returns to the same breaker. Then if part of the ring fails its only normally only one outlet that fails. But you can run one wire to an outlet from the ring (a spur) but only the number you can run from a ring is limited. We are not allowed to daisy chain outlets. The normal cable size is 2.5mm T&E (twin & earth). for a ring main 230V ac 50Hz 30A lighting is 1.5mm or 1mm. Not sure if its any better that USA!

Are you stating 30 Amps at 220 volts/circuit? (6,600 Watts) That is the insane. That equals 55 Amps at 120 volts. In the US a standard home circuit is 15 Amps for most circuits and 20 Amps in a few specific situations.

Too many receptacles is no problem, too many on a circuit is a problem. 10 max on a 20 amp circuit, I seldom go over 8 general purpose receptacles on a 20 amps circuit in buildings that I engineer. Then have a few dedicated circuits in the garage. Each receptacle is counted as 180 volt-amps, (20A x 80% = 16A x 120v = 1920 volt-amps) Never load a circuit, panel or disconnect greater than 80% of it's capacity

Our 1950s house was originally wired as though copper was as precious as gold. It was all electric (baseboard heaters, electric water heater, etc.) yet the kitchen had just four outlets in it, one for the electric 240 volt range, one behind the refrigerator, and two behind the counters (one at each end). We moved in about 12 years ago and after less than a year, we'd had enough: demolition to studs, walled over an extra kitchen doorway, ran a water line for refrigerator with an icemaker and installed an actual hood over the range instead of a dubious ceiling exhaust fan. There is now an outlet every 8 inches over the counters (power strips) for a total of 21 outlets (on four 20 amp circuits). And no, it wasn't that hard to do though it did seem overkill at times. But it most definitely is not. We can have two blenders, a food processor, toaster, microwave, stand mixer, computer, and many other devices all running at once! Life is great now.

You can NEVER have too many outlets!! One thing that I like to do is use a label maker to make a sticker to put on the back of every face plate for every outlet and switch marking exactly which breaker will shut it off. That way their is no guessing, just take the face plate off and boom I need to shut off breaker "C-2".

GFCI can be done in the wall or at the panel. Thing is the panel GFCIs are more spendy. Instead of the twisty wire nuts, use the push connectors. $8 for 100 isn't bad pricing and they are reusable. IMO they hold the wires better and you can see if the wires are embedded all the way.
@stephensaines7100
@stephensaines7100 5 жыл бұрын
[Thing is the panel GFCIs are more spendy.] Multiples more, and they require more work installing, as the neutral pigtail must also be connected. There's reports of them being more problematic than the outlet ones too. Quite often the unbalance in the line is detected less accurately in the breaker...or at least, with only one leg of a feed being behind a GFCI outlet, the chances of being tripped by false leakage detection is less. Perhaps some of the newest ones are a lot better than those available a decade back?

If your code requires an RCD/GFI outlet to be the first on the run, and you can't use a RCD/GFI Breaker, that's actually insane. What if you drill into the wire between the outlet and the breaker? You should just have all RCD/GFI Breakers (or what we call RCBO's which are a circuit breaker and RCD in one) for all circuits in the panel and be done with it.
@stephensaines7100

[What if you drill into the wire between the outlet and the breaker?] Then it's always the breaker itself that will trip, not a GFCI. Are you British or South African/Australian? Your acronyms aren't North-Am. What you propose would jack costs way up unnecessarily.
@Bubblegoose
@Bubblegoose 5 жыл бұрын
Stephen Saines forger drilling. What happens if you touch the active wire somehow, and you’re touching ground somewhere else? The breaker isn’t going to do anything. You are going to get a boot. Wouldn't it be better if you have the GFCIs in the electrical panel? That is at least how we do it over here in Europe. My experience is that there are never enough outlets. The only issue becomes the legal supply capacity of the power source and fuses/circuit breakers provided. In old times it was presumed each out COULD run at maximum load, say 2.5KW. Do source must be capable of that sum maximum, these days with few exceptions most plugged loads are far under that demand. Depends an legal definitions.

GFCI = Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Someone with more knowledge than I have, can correct me if I am wrong, they are designed to prevent a human from getting electrocuted or getting an electrical shocke when there is a problem in the circuit such as a "short" whether caused by water splashing into an outlet, an appliance falling into water, someone nailing or drilling into electrical wires, etc. They also protect against "faults" such as a 'faulty' appliance that may cause an electrical shock or cause a fire, When an appliance is plugged into a GFCI outlet or on a GFCI Breaker line.
@soloban81
@soloban81 5 жыл бұрын
Matthew Groff I believe you are correct. My recollection is that the GFCI is looking at the amount of current on the hot and neutral lines and making sure they are the same. If there is less current going back on the neutral line that means there is some returning via ground wire in some manner (hence a ground fault).

You can never have too many outlets.... i'd also consider running some cat5e cable for future computer network requirements

I dunno why you would pre-wire a garage with cat5e. In that environment you are probably only using WiFi, and that is a single drop to a transmitter from the floor above.

@@Sqtgdog True, it seems everything is WiFi today. Better to pull it and leave it, then not have it though. I could see how having a hardwired CNC router, computer, garage door opener would be convenient. Who knows what the future holds for heaters, cameras, furnaces. Speaker wire might not be bad either.

In one of our houses we had a GFI breaker on the first floor that hooked up with circuits on the 2nd level (or visa-versa?). Drove me nuts one day when the GFI tripped, and nothing was working upstairs, and couldn't figure out why!

rjkdev Common way their wired the homes in my neighborhood was to have a gfci outlet in the hallway bathroom and then have a quad receptacle in the master bath above the vanity on the same circuit. People frequently trip the GFCI in the hall bathroom with shavers or other motorized devices in their master bath and then can’t figure out what happened. They don’t realize they have to reset the GFCI in the other bathroom.

I call designer/worker fatigue😛 just a little. It's cool to see you still take on the vast challenge it looks to be without tons of previous experience and "up to code" practice.😛👍💪 take a breather when ya can😎👌

Here is an idea that may hold value. Make a wiring map of your garage, and later upstairs, taking note of all the outlets on any given breaker. At the outlet/switch boxes, you can write the breaker number on the inside of the outlet/switch covers, noting what breaker protects that box.

Its not the number, its how high they are on the wall. Some need to be lower so when you have a cord running across the garage when you are doing a project in the middle, the cords are low to the groundout of the way.

you can have as many outlets on a circuit as you want , as long as you don't go over 80% of the circuit load. to do this you simply multiply the amperage by the voltage, you’ll get the total wattage capacity... ie:15 amps x 120 volts = 1,800 watts Safe Wattage Capacity: 1,800 watts x 80% = 1,440 watts Safe Amperage Capacity: 15 amps x 80% = 12 amps before a fuse with 80% load capacity will blow 20-amp Circuit : Total Wattage Capacity: 20 amps x 120 volts = 2,400 watts Safe Wattage Capacity: 2,400 watts x 80% = 1,920 watts Safe Amperage Capacity: 20 amps x 80% = 16 amps 30-amp Circuit : Total Wattage Capacity: 30 amps x 120 volts = 3,600 watts Safe Wattage Capacity: 3,600 watts x 80% = 2,880 watts Safe Amperage Capacity: 30 amps x 80% = 24 amps keep in mind there's volt drop as well, over the course of a circuit s length

And there's a limit to the number of breakers per amp service entrance.
