Jesse logic: picks the best fairing strips drags them over by hand, then gets the backhoe. Runs over the fairing strips, throws half of them up there by hand, then left the rest up with the backhoe. This is exactly why I love watching this channel.

The wind will lift the plastic in large flat areas, tearing your anchors and pulling on the tape. If you strategically place some extra lumber on the plastic(but easily moved lumber) you will keep the wind from lifting it and ruining all your hard work. Just a suggestion, of course. Love what you've done so far! Love Bugaboo too, he's a star! Edited to add that the posts look fantastic after oiling! Good job Alissa :)

You have probably already thought of this, but , in case you haven't, I thought I should suggest it. Now that you (we hope) have stopped the rain coming into the garage, you could speed the drying by soaking the water up with some of your sawdust and carting it out. There should be an olfactory bonus of sawdust smell versus wet concrete smell

hi guys, a wee trick for you.when pouring out oil from drums put the spout at the top not the bottom so it is closer to you when you lift it.stops the glug glug glug from air pushing from the back.

Just a suggestion, when tipping a drum of liquid, get the pouring spout/hole high up so air can enter the drum to replace the liquid that is leaving and thus the flow out becomes regular and you don't get the hard to control gush gush gush effect that often makes the job messy.

As I watched you climbing the ladder to the main floor, I thought that maybe you could use a couple leftover beams as a "bridge" from the hill to the main floor. Just a thought. it might make getting to the main floor a little easier. Maybe not, but I thought I'd suggest it. Day by Day, you're making great progress. Thanks, John P.S. As a woodworker, I quickly discovered the need for a thick oil mixed with a thinner for penetration. Using only the thicker one would not properly penetrate. And that penetration of the thicker substance would only occur when temporarily thinned. A mixture of boiled linseed oil and paint thinner gave far more performance over much longer time than the stuff you are using. The thinner evaporated leaving only the boiled oil (much thicker than unboiled). This created an entirely new substance. The wood mixed with the oil actually strengthened the wood by as much as 25% than just the wood due to the deep penetration. As the boiled oil dried over time this increased the strength. Multiple coats could be applied for deeper penetration as necessary for the type conditions (exposure to weather etc).

Why don't you simply lay some long flat boards on top of the plastic to help weight it down. Even with the perimeter well fastened, wind over the surface will tend to lift the plastic. The ensuing motion will open up gaps around the beams and you risk tears. A small number of boards distributed across the plastic will help to keep it down.

We have about 10 of those baker wire shelve units and I find that if I want to store small items on them, I use thin acrylic panels and cut groves for the the poles in each cornet. That way the light gets thru and it is quite a bit more durable then the cardboard.

Hello or Kia Ora I'm Tony a Kiwi living in Australia - NZ has a temperate climate so temp ranges from 8C - 23C in Aussie we live in Queensland and it is like 17C-33C+ so I don't have jackets or jumpers - I do wear a sweat shirt because it is cool for ah hour in the morning. So I watch you guys work incredibly hard everyday ( I have binge watched 150 videos and you are amazing at how much work you both do in a day :). I wish I lived closer I would come help fix all those little faults on batteries and your backo ( I would take thing apart and clean and test ) Your attitude to doing things is incredible - I loved the video about one of your neighbors falling off the road and away you went and did not hesitate to go pull him out. Jess all you could talk about was your new chains for the front :) . I have just taken up woodworking and I watch all these guys build things and they have $20,000 worth of kit in their shop. They all show how to make a workbench with a workmate circular saw and a drill and timber for $15. So they build it and when no one is not looking they take it to their thicknesser and planer and push them through and they have these beautiful work benches made for $80 yeah right :) - but I have watched hours and hours and hours of these things and get annoyed with how they do things ( Oh lets make this perfect circle on my CNC machine. I'm semi retired as some mothe sent their unvaccinated child to school with whooping cough the whole school go it - my sons was just a touch but he bought it home and my vacc shots were 50 years old so I got it and it blew my heart to pieces - so I am now on the advanced heart failure clinic ( 30 people - 20 will die because they smoke drink and sucking in KFC, pizza and Maccas )- being an engineer I go in with spreadsheets of my medication, blood pressure, temps, glucose levels, and blood tests ( I take 22 tablets a day - I know all the side effects of each one and what doesn't suit and make them change it :) ) my heart is running at 19% and they will give me an artificial or transplant at 11% because at 15% the other organs start failing. This happened four years ago - a year ago I started building things my wife let me move from the back patio into the garage and it is coming together. I use local online auctions and buy tools I am slowly getting it together.. I enjoyed your work shop in Maine and then getting them to your Raising was fantastic - - So I did not realise that your New Years day video was 1/1/2018 :) so I'm up to date with your videosQuestions1. did you sort out the dude batteries2. Did the solar panel output charge the batteries3 I love the way you ignore your visitors and don't put them on screen ( even your mum and dad )4 You work far to hard5 I see these other channels all get freebies from XYZ and they do a box opening and get more stuff I hope these manufacturers do they same for you and see you as a good advertising channel.6 You do not eat enough - make a scroggin bar ( hiking bar full of stuff )I don't know what a huckleberry is but we have lots of berries like that but when the ground is 40C they grow way fwn South where it is cooler :( - but we do have all the tropical fruits and prawns ( shrimp )Thank you for sharing your life - It is really enjoyable -Alyssa there are not a lot of women who could keep up with you ( or men ) you both do so much - I love that saw mill you turn trees into houses.Take Care NowArohanuiTony Aratema

There is nothing as sweet as oiling a normal looking piece of wood then watching the internal grain pop out. I buy blank guitar bodies from a company called Warmoth, then finish them in whatever the customer wants. Some of the exotic woods like Madagascar ebony and koa just come *alive* with some linseed oil mixed with a tiny bit of stain to give it a tint. So cool.

Jesse when i see Alyssa rolling the oil on those beams, i am crying please try a brush you have beams that have large cracks they need oil inside to keep your wood from drying out and splitting over the years, if the oil is there to preserve, then work it in with a brush don't waist it , rolling the beams out side when lying horizontal is a good idea now they are upright you do need to work that oil into the wood more, hope you don't mind me saying as it will come back and haunt you in years to come. POSITIVE HELP! I was taught by a duct tape rep that whilst the initial tack of duct tape will hold it in place, it will peal off in time, as "you've not applied it correctly". "You have to burst the glue", he said. If you want it to stick firmly you need to put it in place, and then compress it with a hard plastic roller (I use a wallpaper edge roller). If I've not got one with me I'll use something solid with no sharp edges; a small off-cut of 2"x2" prepared, a piece of poly pipe etc. or similar. But a roller really does the job better. This compressing the tape will expand the glue onto your surface and form a much stronger bond, and will stay stuck for a very long time. I've still got duct tape stuck to brickwork after three winters and for many years on metal ducting and plastic pipework using this method. So, for 'short term hold' push it on with your fingers and for 'long term hold' compress it along its length. Hope this helps many of you :-)

dunno if it was suggested before but- TESA cloth tape is by far the best sticking and easiest to apply tape on the market (not proven scientifically but heaps of trail and error) It's very much known in the audio and stage tech world... it sticks like hell even on moist and dusty surfaces , I reckon that the best part of it is that unlike many other gaff tapes out there, it's very smooth to deploy ... super efficient for the stage trade's needs and I'm pretty sure for your needs as well. It's on the expensive side though.

What's with all the haters on here. constructive criticism is good but shitting on 2 ppl building basically an off grid debt free property? It is not easy, if it was more ppl would do it. And them showing the negative aspects of the situation is more important than the positives. Gives others an idea of what they will be facing. And a lot of ppl being assholes about how long it takes them which is odd since the point they said from day one is debt free if they wanted it done faster they could hire ppl from a loan and get done in no time but that would defeat the purpose of being stuck in the rat race.

You can use a couple of your "extra" floor joist's to make a temporary platform that stick out beyond the house frame around the center post. Then screw down a plywood panel to stand on and you can use a ladder to reach the brace board you want to remove. Just be sure to anchor the inside end of the cantilever so the outside does not tip down when you put your weight on it. :) I think you will find this much safer than trying to do the job at the top of a 30 foot ladder, or reaching around from the inside. I agree with one of the other commentators, think about covering the garage opening with heavy clear plastic. You can the at least run some space heaters that will make a huge difference in the next few weeks.
