The simple way to purify your biogas. The gas from a biogas digester contains more than just methane. Without purification, it can contain carbon dioxide, water vapour and the dangerous hydrogen sulfide.
Carbon Dioxide - removed with water:
Carbon dioxide is not dangerous but it will mean that the gas will not burn cleanly. So if the flame of your biogas is orange it suggests your gas is a high proportion of carbon dioxide.
Water Vapour - removed with cat litter (or activated charcoal or any desiccant )
Water vapour can get into your biogas due to the temperature of the digester. Any moisture in the biogas can be corrosive to any metal pipes you use and also gas bottles if you compress into to store. There is a simple way to remove this, so don't risk those issues by checking out how.
Hydrogen sulfide - removed with steel wool:
Hydrogen sulfide is a really dangerous gas. It will attack the mucous membrane in your airways and around your eyes. In biogas, it is never in high quantities but it can still cause harm, so it is safer to remove it. Again, it is not worth the risks of not purifying the biogas because it is so easy and simple.
In the video, I explain a bit more about that and the low-tech ways to remove those gases you don't want.
