Who doesn't love the Purple Passion Plant!? Purple Passion Plant also known as the Velvet Plant or Purple Velvet Plant, Gynura aurantiaca make excellent houseplants! This PPP, no, not the pink princess philodenron grow easily in most household conditions which is what makes this such a popular houseplant. Of all of the trendy plants out there, I don't understand why this purple fuzzy gem isn't on top of the list, or even on the list! How to grow Purple Passion Plant is very simple, water when top inch of soil dries, give bright-indirect light and fertilize with an all purpose every other week or even just monthly during the active growing season. I actually think these would make good companion plants for the fiddle leaf figs. Now that costa farms has released the trendy tropicals, the little fiddle fig is becoming more available. Imagine the gynura aurantiaca underplanted with a little fiddle ficus lyrata, the glossy green foliage of the fig combined with the fuzzy purple leaves of the purple passion plant would be stunning! In this houseplant care guide I cover the basics as well as how to propagate purple passion plants and how to prune passion plants, how to fertilize purple passion plants, how to water purple passion plants.... you get it, how to grow the purple passion plant. Oh, and another wonderful feature of this houseplant is that it's a non-toxic houseplant! Add this to the list of plants safe for children and plants safe for pets.

I had mine maybe 8 years..... should I say offspring from the original for years.....the main plant hung down towards the floor, it drops base leaves as it gets longer.....so I added new cuttings at the top to fill it in....repotting was a handfull...but it always came back easily....sold it at a garage sale when it got too big needed room for new plants, but I always think fondly of this beautiful plant. Thanks jeff.

I've had more for around 10 years. I adore that it has become such a climbing vine and filled my entire window! It climbs outside the window during the summer and I have to reign her in during the winter. Just learning about propagating and cutting her back now.

They seem to do well as a hanging pot where they can vine down towards the floor. Also if you watch the leaves, they may tell you the watering schedule. The leaves will visibly droop when the plant needs to be watered. (Of the common houseplants, this one seems the most expressive in this regard. Other plants will have leaves dry up before they give other clues to that.)

A family friend, who finally admitted to his wife that he has to give up his green house and plants within, called me to come over and grab what plants I wanted. Came home to Texas for a short visit. My elderly parents like to buy plants but not look at the care of them. This poor thing was sitting in the window and had mealy bugs(?) on all the leaves. I dumped out the soil and rinsed off the whole plant while I searched for a video for care as I’ve never seen this plant before and needed to save it. As I was listening to this video, I found it had root rot. Of course. My dad likes to drown everything and give it exactly opposite if what it needs. Love the propagation tips. That easy huh?? Bet. This plant is super easy and I’m all about it. Now I gotta write down notes for my dad so he doesn’t kill it when I leave. Thank you so much for all the little tid bits. Btw, even three years later that lime green pot looks good although I personally prefer a lemon yellow. Lol!

Hi Jeff! I had this plant years ago and really enjoyed it, but didn't realize they had a "life span", so once it died I never bought another one. It did last for several years, but got pretty leggy, and yes, the flowers stink, plus they look like dandelion flowers. How can such a beautiful plant have such a flower.....? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I may buy one again if I see it thanks to your very helpful info on this plant. 👍 👌 👏 So, I went on IG to see why you haven't had your normally scheduled videos and I couldn't find anything, but from the comments it sounded like others knew. This plant can and will tolerate full sun and heat. I’ve been growing this plant for over 22 years and every year before spring I would propagate it in water then transfer them to outside. It will lose all the leaves at first then replace them with brand new leaves. I have it in full sun and it gets sun all day long where I put it. Kepted it outside when it’s over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Which the temp here gets that high often during summer here in TN. I give it away during fall before freeze cause by the end of the summer it’s huge.

I had a run-in with white fly infestation on my purple passions. NOT a fun time - basically I quarantined the infected plants and used a rubbing alcohol spray on them. I think the high evaporation of the alcohol was the reason my leaves didn't suffer but boy was it effective against the flies! Also, I bought two plant clippings for 10$ in 2017 - and I'm sure the mama plants are still around somewhere but I've gone and propagated off them for years and given away the babies while also making sure I kept one in every room in my house. I think the 4-5 year old thing is a myth if the plantkeeper is minding all the other things you mentioned in the video.

i loooove mine sm. she was doing so good the first 6 months but i guess i under watered her recently, she was flopped over so i watered her and she perked back up ofc, but now has lost the majority of her foliage. like, she has 8 leaves left from what was 2 very lush stems😭😭 turned super brown and crispy real quick. i took a propagation just in case lol and also it was so limp that one fell off when i grabbed it to water it lol so i propped that one too 🤣 we’ll see how it goes, if i have to get a new one so be it i def need this plant in my life , too gorgeous!

Hey that's ok. Not everything is for everyone. There are plenty of very common and popular plants that do anything for me. I get it. 🙂

Can I just say that during the winter if you are in a cold climate, check the water because indoor heating tends to dry everything out along with outdoor moisture being frozen. Just something I have noticed. I have to water much more in the winter vs. our humid summers.

Mine is really limp, she's still young, I'm in NY so it's been cold, I have moved her underneath the peace Lilly I have and shares a lot with my golden pathos. I've only used coffee grinds as a fertilizer. Any tips on what to do to help? Love your video.

Love this little plant. Very expensive here just outside (east)Toronto. $19.99 for a small plant.

I found a replacement this weekend after killing mine years ago. I have it in a bathroom window facing west so it gets sun through a privacy window filter. I hope to keep it there it's just too hot for it outside. Getting 100+ this weekend 🥵

I have had mine for about 5 years. It grew best when I mostly ignored it. I killed the main plant last winter by over watering it I think. I saved a clipping and it grew ok this year but I over did the water again so now im back down to a clipping. That's why I am doing some research to try not to kill it again!! Wish me luck.

I think I overfertilized mine and killed it for the most part. I’m hoping it will come back, because right now it’s a purple passionless 😂

Hey Jeff. Hope you're doing good?. How long before your climate allows the grow room plants to move outside? In Ne uk we are getting liws of 2-5 c at night. Occasional low double digits, usually high singles. Have a great weekend. Missed your entertainment last weekend!

Thank you! It varies from year to year. I've already moved the more cold hardy plants back out. We sometimes get a random few days of cold in the first week of may, so I usually wait until late april even though it's plenty warm outside from mid march and on. Just have to be careful bc of those few random cold snaps.

Absolutely beautiful quick question unrelated... do you know of any epiphytes that are hardy to zone 6? Apparently the resurrection fern is hardy just wondering if you have tried this?
@TropicalPlantParty

Hey Anthony! I've read they are hardy to zone 6 also, but haven't tried them outside until this year so I don't yet. I don't know of other epis off the top of my head but I'll think on that one and let ya know if I find any.

Love this plant and have been attempting to propagate mine as I’m worried it’s quite old (I bought it from someone who had it for a long time before me) every time I place my cuttings into the soil all the leaves go soft and droopy even if I’m very careful not to get them wet. Is this normal? I’ve left them as an experiment but I’m concerned they will just die.
