Please don't use this method. Her pea leaves are yellow from too much nitrogen. Peas only need straw mixed with ordinary winter garden bed dirt. Just direct sew at end of summer, and start of spring. Use a trellis or run string from one stick to another. Throw down some snail pellets and enjoy. You won't need to water spring crop, unless its unusually dry. I don't mean to undermine this nice lady, I just like to see success, especially now we have food shortage.

My purple peas are so huge compared to the green ones. The stems are so thick. I don't use anything except straw in my soil for growing these. Tomato starter is too strong for peas and stunts growth. It's for heavy feeders like tomatoes. Just normal soil is perfect for peas. Peas are used to regenerate soil.

legumes make their own nitrogen from bacterial symbiosis. so any 0-nitrogen fertiliser will be good.

Have you grown Mangetout before? If you have, what varieties are your favourites?

Do they taste the same?

Yes, in my opinion these two varieties do taste the same. However the purple varieties are full of antioxidants.
