Purple Sunbird pair feeding chicks in nest filmed at my residence, from drawing-room window.
Although a common bird, male Purple Sunbird is striking with its vivid colors, especially during the breeding season- Vibrant and iridescent purple-blue.
Pair built their nest, in 5-15 days, typically a small hanging oblong purse, made of soft grass and fibers, leaves, cobwebs, etc., decorated with detritus and rubbish, including pieces of bark and caterpillar frass, lined with silky-white seed down; suspended on twig 5-6 m from ground, from inner branch of Acacia nilotica tree (દેશી બાવળ, बबूल). The nest is hanging on the end of a thin, thorny branch, which helps conceal it from predators.
Both male and female sunbirds share responsibilities when constructing the nest, incubating the eggs, and feeding the chicks. it is a clutch of 3 eggs mostly, incubation period is 2 weeks. Sunbirds primarily consume nectar from flowers, hence their name suggests. However, they supplement their chick's diet with insects such as spiders, caterpillars, and larvae, providing essential nutrients to their offspring for their growth and development. We even observed them collecting spiders 🕷️ and spiderweb 🕸️ from our window lintel!
Their nesting period is around 13 days. After that chicks are ready to visit outside world. I will share the other video of same nest in short time.
P.S.
This pair used this nest once again to brood in quick succession. Tragically second time their nest infiltrate by Indian Grey Mongoose!!!
