I don't understand the point in having a bowl game when you have a #15 ranked team playing a non ranked team .... just another way for colleges to try and bring in money!

Rankings in college football scale dramatically when you start to climb up the ladder. When a team is ranked 4-1 it’s an unstoppable force, with many of their games having a 30-40 point difference. Both teams had the same record, and for an non ranked team to make it to a bowl game is still looked at as a big accomplishment. #15 (if I’m correct) should be towards the very bottom of the ranking, making this a fair fight for a football game

This is a year later, but the bowl match ups are typically determined by conference affiliation and where each team finished within said conference. For example, the Rose Bowl was traditionally the the Pac-12 champion vs the Big 10 champion. The Alamo Bowl for the second placed Pac12 team and second or third from the Big12. Obviously this was an evenly matched game based on the final score. Sometimes rankings are more about perception than how good a team is. Or sometimes teams match up well against each other, so the game is close than their records or rankings would suggest.

This is all Chip Kelly's fault. He made Oregon believe they were a national contender when they weren't. Many years later everyone still believes they can be, but really they are a top 3 team in the PAC12, which is about equal to a an unranked ACC team. But Lanning will change all that.
