Glad it's fixed,a saw that doesn't work is a major bummer! The old filter looked great,and when a spark arrestor is bad,you won't be able to see through it (for future reference). If an arrestor is clogged,it can easily be cleaned with a propane torch,there are videos that will show you how. Stay warm,and happy cutting!

Thanks! Based on how they looked (spark arrestor and fuel filter and air filter) - I'm guessing it was a fuel issue or the spark plug. But the plug didn't look too bad.

Very good video Chad. In the 5 years I've had my 271 Farm Boss I've not flipped the orange gate for winter mode. I have run the saw on sub 32 degree days without any noticeable issues. After watching your vid I've decided to try it and see if I can tell a difference.

Thanks! They're both running great now (MS271 and MS290 Farm Boss). The scrench does fit the spark plug - I just prefer the extension of the socket wrench when I'm working near my toolbox.

I wonder too. I could have done one thing at a time and determined it that way -but I really just wanted to do everything I could to get it running. If I had to guess, it wasn't the spark arrestor for sure. It was clean. And the fuel filter looked clean, as well. The air filter looked clean - but since it was that felt kind - it's hard to tell. I'm guessing it was just the gas or the spark plug. I doubt that it was actually the coagulated bar and chain oil - but I suppose that may have played a role?

I’d love to see a video on how to replace the fuel tank vent valve. I’ve looked all over KZbin and haven’t found one on the ms271. It’s located on the top, back side of the fuel tank.

The orange bar oil is the best it don't gel up it gets thicker but when the saw warms up the case warms the oil tank.

Why does everyone replace spark plugs so often? In a car they last 100k miles or longer!

I think fuel injection and the fact that cars run on gasoline that isn't mixed with oil helps the spark plugs last longer.

I keep a toothbrush in my case to clean up the machine after use. Takes up little space and makes quick work of cleaning off sawdust, even in the narrow gaps.

This is a great tip! I tend to wear my toothbrush down to nothing before I replace it. But maybe I'll toss my 1/2 way worn one into the chainsaw case and treat myself to a new toothbrush early! :)

You should always check the gap to make sure it's right for your application. In my case, the gap was correct for this saw straight out of the box.

Looks like one of the engine cover screws is loose... you can see it bouncing around while cutting

You saw it! I never noticed it when running the saw in this video. I also never noticed it when editing the video. But a few days later, I noticed the saw was missing the cover screw. I had to go to my local Stihl dealer and get a replacement. Good eyes!

Hi, thank you for video, I have a question abouth 291 and 271 differences, both have same price and weigh, but 291 have 55cm piston and 3.80hp, 271 have 50cm andı 3.60, why both are exect same weight, is 271 more durable or better quality?

Interesting - around here the MS291 is about $50 more than the 271. As far as more durability - I've never owned a 291, so I'm not sure about that. I would imagine the quality of both saws is similar, as they're both home/ranch grade saws. I am really liking my new MS261 pro-grade saw. Probably not an issue with your newer looking saw but sometimes the fuel line itself can collapse thereby restricting fuel at full throttle. Especially if ethanol gas is used or especially if left in saw.

It's pretty new, but I did replace that fuel line. They're inexpensive and easy to do. I do always avoid using any Ethanol gasoline.

Great question! My 290 came with the farm boss bar, my 271 came with it, and I added a 20 inch bar and they gave me a Farm Boss bar for that one too.

That difficult to remove Motomix fuel can "safety" cap-cover is aggravating, wasting valuable production time struggling with that ridiculous design, requiring channel-locks to remove and replace those caps every time, ultimately destroying those caps. Just that seemingly small thing is aggravating.

Yeah, that cap is a pain! It’s almost like they designed it to be impossible to get off when working with gloves on. I’m not sure if it’s because it is fuel that ships in the container, or if it’s some type of child-proofing. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

@@PurpleCollarLife - Even without gloves...super difficult after the first use. Definitely one of those child-proof features, poorly designed. Reason: the plastic "safety" cap or "over-cap" strips out against the metal while the inner metal cap is doing what it's designed to do, seal the can, really well. Not to beat a dead horse, but that is just extremely aggravating when we're trying to keep a pace.

Were you able to get it started? Maybe it is just flooded? Mine got flooded today and saw a video in KZbin where you put it on run instead of choke and put your knee on the saw. Then just keep pulling and around 15 or 20 pulls it starts. Basically forcing air to it.
