I've been working on engines for decades, live on a heavily wooded property and maintain multiple chainsaws. I'm also an engineer. I still learn a few things but mostly watch Steve because his videos are so enjoyable. 👍 I hope the millenials and GenZ are paying attention, because the world is not quite ready for electrification yet and when us GenX (and boomers) are gone, a tremendous amount of combustion knowledge will go with us.

@cobra-he9xj Жыл бұрын
@@moisty254 Surely you must be correct. Everything *is on the internet. In fact, I'll let you prove it to us all since over a century of combustion knowledge is instantly at your fingertips, right? Answer this easy one: You have an 850cfm 4 corner idle (adjusted perfectly) atop a single-plane manifold attached to a 500-ish c.i. V8 with a moderate street cam. Spark coutesy of a centrifugal advance timed capacitive discharge ignition capable of multiple hits per cycle near idle. Distributor timing is perfect (and so is coil voltage level). So is fuel pressure. No wiring issues. All new parts. No emissions equipment or sensors to deal with. No ECU. No mechanical issues. Just old-fashioned carb heaven. But she won't run - at all. Even at idle. A couple coughs if you are lucky. You tried adjusting everything. What's wrong? What's the telltale sign to check your suspicion in a matter of seconds? That's right. You have no clue. Why? Because intuition is not in any database and it can't be "Googled". BTW, I asked an OG engine builder that same question and he knew instantly.

@@cobra-he9xj hahaha i love it. put your engine in front of me, pay me and i'll have a look. what's the model of the engine, carby, dizzy, spark plug gaps, expected coil voltages. send me at least a picture haha. i just fixed my chainsaw, what was wrong with it? it wouldnt start. it had spark, fuel in the cylinder, good compression. what did i do to fix it cobra? 🤣
@vite1968
@vite1968 Жыл бұрын
@@cobra-he9xj What is the answer? I would ask whether it can run at all without disconnecting anything, i would ask for the firing order, whether the spark plug cables are connected in the right order. Since you are mentioning carburator, i would be interrested in a state of the plugs after few of these no starts.

I purchased an off-brand saw mainly due to financial reasons, with the intent of trying to mill some lumber for my hobbies. I've had the saw for a few months, (28" bar) and haven't been able to get it started since day one. Fortunately, I really haven't been ready to do any milling until recently when we had 11 trees taken down on our property, including a couple of 80' pines. It was now or never so I began researching and found your video on unflooding the chainsaw. I had assumed I was flooding it every time since I often ended with the strong smell of gasoline. Your video not only educated this novice on how engines get flooded, but showed me a couple ways to clear it up. I did the "tool" approach and removed the spark plug, etc. EVERYTHING you said worked great, plus I now know in hot weather (like here in FL most of the year), I may not have to choke at all. I just finished my first milling cut on an oak log only about 5 ft long. I cannot explain how excited I am to continue my processing and create a little backlog of lumber for future projects. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. (I was ready to bite the bullet and take it to a mechanic who would have gotten it stated but never trained me how to do it right.

You sir are a Legend to me. I watched this ... got off my couch and got my Echo Timberwolf to start in under 10 minutes. Of course I did it in the garage because I couldn't get over myself and do it outside so my neighbors could watch me fail possibly for a second day in a row. One day I'll mature. Got it to start and rev'd it up after sitting for a year or so. I love that I can now start it in the field with literally no tools or starter fluid.

On Saturday July 10 Omaha was hit with a severe wind storm. My parents live in an older wooded section of the city and lost power. They had a tree on their garage. My dad (74) had a brand new Sthil chainsaw but could never get it started and was ready to get his hand saw out. This video saved the day. It was flooded and we got it working. I can’t tell you how grateful we are for this video!

I would like to say “Thank You” for providing your information to us all (mechanically inclined or those of us inept). You helped me after I put chain oil into the fuel tank and vice versa. I followed both videos on chain oil in gas tank and flooding and ta’da ... my Stihl chainsaw is functioning again... May someone be as kind as you are to your fans. Cheers 🍻 My local shop quoted me $200 to fix with a 2 week turnaround. I fixed with your directions in 3 minutes after watching both videos.

Today was the first time my chainsaw has given me any issues starting at all. So I changed the spark plug, the air filter, and the gas filter only to have it continue to fail. I'm so glad that I found this video. It would have saved me about 1.5 hours in time and $25 dollars in parts had I watched it PRIOR to going to Lowes to buy the new parts. Locking the blade and starting it while holding the gas full throttle worked like a charm. Thank you for posting this video. I can't wait to watch your other videos to see what else I can learn.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I bought a brand new MS170 today and it would not start - I'm pretty sure I flooded it. I cranked it over a LOT at full choke, but at the time didn't realize what I had done.. I called the place where I bought it and the guy advised me not to pull it more than 3 times at full choke when trying to start it. Still searching, I found your video. Another video recommended a zip tie to squeeze the trigger wide open while I cranked it. I used the zip tie, but not too tight so I could easily slip it - it stays on the 170 now. It took me about 18 pulls to hear the "pop/burp". - after that, I slipped the zip tie off and used my hand to hold it a full throttle. I cranked a couple more times and it started and ran great. I did have a lot of white smoke at first. It's 1:30 AM here and I couldn't wait till morning to try your way - now I can get to sleep.

Fantastic video Steve, thank you. I repair small powered equipment for my organization and they have established procedures for clearing a flooded saw in an emergency situation. Much like what you did, they put an emphasis on no tools for the sake of "worst case scenario". The method taught by our people is a "two person" starting procedure where one person is holding the throttle wide open and the other is attempting to start it. I'm not sure if the reasoning for it is that there will always be two people available no matter what (this is true), but seeing that using the right positioning and technique allows you to achieve it by yourself is a game changer. Thanks again and keep at it.

I am retired now, but was an auto mechanic in the days of carburetor engines. If a car flooded you cleared it by holding your foot to the floor. That would hold the choke open and not draw fuel through the carb. Customers would always say, But won't that flood it? NO! That's what he just did. He gave the engine only air by hold the throttle wide open. The engine does not produce enough vacuum to draw fuel at cranking speed when the throttle is held wide open.
