"The middle slices don't move and you can't rotate the hole cube." Yeah, well, they don't count. Moving the middle slice is not one move, but actually two moves. One for each outer slice in the oposite direction. Aka it's not the outer slices you move in the oposite direction, the turn in the desired direction, which you follow with a turn of the cube to make it LOOK LIKE, als if the middle slice was moved. And you only need to rotate it to look around it. In minecraft you can fly around it. So visually you rotate the entire would with it. Means no need to rotate the cube, means no need to be able to move the middle slice, means no mising moves. These two limitations are there for not actual limitations but just featurecreep that would count as "nice to have" at best if one wants to implement them anyway. ... Can't wait to see the featurecreeped finished cube though xD.

@@AlexPearce-mp3td It can only, if rotating the cube is possible. because if rotating is not allowed, but moving the middle slice is, you could move all 3 slides and would have rotated the cube without ever rotating it. That's why I said moving the middle slice is just moving both outer slices in the oposite direction plus an aditional rotation of the entire cube. That also means, if you don't count the middle move as 2 moves, you could do two outer moves and claim it to be one move. But since that's not the case, the middle move simply can't count as a (single) move.

Oh man, I'm not a speed cuber, but I do love solving rubik's cubes, have a little collection, so I love this video. I have a few ideas that I want to try myself, it sounds like you're moving stickers into the correct places, but what if we actually move pieces? Each corner has only 8 possible positions, edge 12 and centers 6, this way you can probably send less data and just decode it in each face to show the correct colors hopefully making it faster, I also have some more ideas but no idea how it'd work, I have to sit to it and try out Cubes and redstone, this will be fun!!!

Only 5 bits would need to be used to identify which piece it is as theres only 20 movable pieces, then only 2 bits would need to be used per bit chain to identify its rotation. If you have register positions corresponding to each location on the cube, it would be extremely easy to create a program that would swap out registers and change rotation. My recommendation for display would be to set up a system to dispense entities such as boats, minecarts, or armorstands with different trims and colors to represent each of the colors, if not, flying machines could cover a striped pattern instead of a whole one within the gaps.
