Purpose of Using Activated Charcoal Before a HEPA Filter in an NBC filter. Although the charcoal has other functions this video covers why the charcoal provides a hold up volume for radioactive noble gases Krypton and Xenon.

Bless you. I watched your videos on nuclear contamination filters, and I believe they provide valuable assistance to people in Pakistan who may not have access to the latest technologies. Preparing for a nuclear incident is undoubtedly challenging, and I commend your efforts as they significantly benefit us. I would like to inquire whether there is a need to replace the activated charcoal in the filter after a certain period. How long can we expect it to remain effective? Your response will be greatly appreciated.

I would think this type of filter would be good for about a month. We have these type filters in nuclear plants and they are not all that big and are normally good for 30 days. Of course that depends on the air quality and contamination levels. If it is extremely dusty the dust alone could plug the filter. So having some sort of pre filter would be very useful to extend the life of the filter. Also using it at low flow rates will extend the life but you need to normally have a slight negative to neutral pressure in the shelter.

Don't get me wrong, but in Swiss and UK made NBC filters HEPA/ULPA filter is the first layer. According to your theory maybe using a prefilter (at the top) with a thin activated charcoal layer would be the best option?

The reason the HEPA filter element is last is when the fission product gases decay they decay to particulates and can be captured by the HEPA. Also small particles of charcoal that could have adsorbed radioactive gases or particles can escape and would be filtered.

The activated carbon, if I order some the only ones I see is for aquariums, do you recommend any?

The one for aquariums should be fine. There is not a lot of difference. They add some coating to make it more effective but it will still be effective.

Non-standard because it’s wrong. A lot of people pronounce it incorrectly. However if you’re going to present yourself as knowledgeable on a topic and expect people to believe you know what you’re talking about you should pronounce it correctly. It just makes your entire presentation sound unqualified
