I am 49 and I've been in crisis because I'm realizing that I've done nothing, and never been able to realize a single dream. I've gotten so close! I had 2 big dreams and really, they weren't even huge or unattainable; in fact, it often feels like my entire life was an absolute waste. I have always wanted to be a vocalist and have been singing since I began speaking. When I was in high school and thinking about degrees, I knew I wanted to go to music school but like you said, back in the 90’s, anything artistic wasn't considered a career. That sucks! My mother did tell me that I would not be going to music school because in order to make it in the music industry you either have to be really good and be at the place at the right time or you must know someone. I had been going to voice lessons on and off throughout my childhood and I performed in plays as a child and in different churches in my vicinity.

Even though I was very creative as a child my mum just sum it up that I'd need to be able to draw better(just even a few lessons would probably do the trick) and she encouraged me to go to completely unsuitable school. I'm 46 and I'm still recovering in a sense of finding confidence in myself. We need to be our own best cheer leaders now. Hi!!!! OMG - You could be telling my story. In 2018 I was in my 50’s, newly divorced after 23 years of marriage, had a job that paid more than I had ever even thought possible, and bought my dream home. By 2023 I was completely burned out and felt like I’d spent my entire life as a robot. I quit my job, sold my condo, and took a gap year. (Yes, everyone thought I was crazy) Recently, I started creating digital art for junk journals and am in the process of starting my youtube channel. I’ve no idea where this is headed but I’m never going back to corporate America. After watching your video and reading the comments, it appears we are all part of a movement to shed the old rules and truly live our lives as we feel they were meant to be. Big Hugs XO

I've been hiking a great bit, yoga and curating my life to what I want now. My son is off to college and it was the perfect time. I've moved 3x, downsized even more, took an unplanned 7 weeks road trip, curated some more, spent a summer working with the National Park services and that pushed me back into my art- I am mostly watercolors, drawing, jewelry, some fiber art, pottery, photography. We are very similar- loved working the Gap in the 90's I wish they would bring that clothing back. I am also almost 50. It's funny how we come full circle! As immature as it may sound out loud, I say "I don't wanna!!!" to so many things in life, societal expectations, people who judge, etc.

You sound exactly like me. In 2018 about to turn 50 I separated after being with my ex-husband for nearly 25 years. I am a creative too who put it aside for a long time (well not completely) raising 6 kids and working (I didn't hate my job but it never was my life goals) Since I was 5 years old I knew I wanted to write novels. I did write during those times, had a lot of fails and like you- I was raised to get a job, and settle down- any form of being an artist is heads in the cloud. In 2019- I decided to put get back at writing- and by 2022 I decided to do it seriously. Now I am 55 years old and I feel like I am being my authentic self. YOU GOT THIS! This is one of the best times to be a creative person. We have so many avenues to express ourselves. Lots of work but to me, what are the options? One thing I know is if I don't do what I have always thought I was meant to do, it will be the one thing I regret on my deathbed. The reality is, at this age, if we don't do it now, there is no later. I am so glad I have hung up the chains that held me back (aka my own self and the belief that being creative is a hobbie only) and am just going for it! What do we have to lose? In reality. Nothing. We already have years of behind us where we didn't do what was calling to us. Creating for the love of creating and taking it serious, will create art. Period!

Mine had its seeds in 2008 (kids went off to college, got divorced, went back to college, got that art degree)...but I chickened out and went back to the safety of a "real job" after losing my studio in 2014 (corporate owners ran it into the ground to cash out). I stopped all creative endeavors and went full time corporate - then 5 years down the line when I was told I was literally developing an ulcer from the stress and driving my auto immune disease into full disability - that corporate clown moved all our jobs off shore. I "lost it" - I cashed out my 401K, and took a month long trip to camp and see all those things on my Bucket list. I even hiked The Wave! Started a creative business that uses that degree AND my business skills and not looking back! I'm continually surprised that even in this economy, how much it grows.

Thank you for sharing your story. Midlife… oh what a journey. Just hit my mid forties and wow, just the hormonal changes are a rollercoaster, throw in life happening, geesh. A little suggestion to take or leave, be as specific as possible in your niche. Perfect one subject, medium. This is how you get found and how you become known as an artist. Just how you mentioned Robert Bateman, he is synonymous with his wildlife works. The art market is SO saturated. The more you spread yourself out the further away you get from being found. You’re beautiful and very likeable. Wishing you great success!

I'm only 10 minutes in and love your story! I'm 41 and pursuing graphic design. I've wanted learn since I was in my twenties, but took a path that focused on stability which meant unfulfilling jobs. It's so refreshing to find others pivoting later in life to work that is meaningful and brings them joy. cheers!

I’m an artist, who like yourself, didn’t get much chance to create what I loved for about twenty years. After raising my lovely family, I realized I could take up painting again! I wasn’t sure what I wanted to paint, but as I kept working at it, I started to find my style and my passion! And I started my own KZbin channel a few days ago!! Thank you for the inspirational video! Some really cool ideas! I wish you many blessings!

Hi! I'm also a GenXer who started a creative business later in life. It's taken me a while to get established, which is totally fine given that I was basically starting from scratch, I work full-time, and still have kids at home. But I plan to do more with it as they become more independent. ❤ Just wanted to say hi and that I’m totally here for all of this. Thank you for sharing your journey! 👏🏼🥰🎉

I'm 54 and your goals, history, and art style sound so similar to mine. My one and only child just graduated high school so last year I decided to set the foundation for an art business and find my style. I'm realized to find my style, like you said, you just have to put in the time to do a LOT of art, no other way around it. So that's where I am, but I can tell I'm almost there as I'm seeing some similarities in the majority of my work. Cool how that happens naturally. Shout out to all the Gen X artists out there! We were the 80's teenagers that are still rad and we've got some art in us that the world needs to see!

I’m also 50 and was made redundant from my graphics job in a marketing team of a large tech company in 2020. It was boring but I stayed for nearly 9 years! I took some time out and cut a long story short I’m currently trying to establish myself as a visionary, intuitive artist… mainly watercolour. It makes me so excited to take this path but I do other part~time non creative jobs too so I can do it. It’s making time for my art…

I'm so happy I found your video! I can relate to your situation 100 %. I'm 41 and I recently quit my soul-sucking office job because I can't spend the rest of my life staring at numbers at computer screen. I also love art and I'm really into life drawing, landscapes and animal illustrations. I particularly love your idea of doing wedding event illustrations. I was actually at a whisky festival once that had an artist who made cartoon versions of the people who attended. Super cool drawings and a fantastic memory to keep. I wish you all the luck and I look forward to seeing your progress!

Although I am not in the right position to do it just yet, as I need to earn an income to help support my family, once we have rebuilt our savings, this will certainly be on my radar. I want to do water color painting of elegantly dressed ladies of the 1920s!

Subscribed!! I was NOT bored at all - thank you for sharing your back story as well as your plan for income streams. I am weeks away from my 69th birthday. I am self-employed ... 38.5 years as a software developer. I LOVED coding as well as the others I worked with. Until a few years ago. Ultimately, I completed my last development contract Jan 2024 (this year). Timing was good for my mental health. I do need/want to continue to generate some income as well as keep my brain active and always learning. I was teased about my art/lack of talent as a child and decided that I was not creative. But programming IS creative and I am an amateur photographer/videographer and happen to love my own stuff! Then, in response to various things/people ... I started exploring drawing, ink and wash, watercolor, gouache ... and HOLY COW! I am loving the learning process - no masterpieces and I am not a "natural", but I am loving all of the creative things as well as letting go of the programming part of my business. I am at the point of figuring out my own income streams so this video was so timely. Big, big thanks for sharing your journey!! It helps me consider my own options.

It was like you were telling my story just a bit different focus. I was obsessed with horses and animals and drew them constantly growing up and took every art class every year. I joined the navy after I went to college and dropped out because I didn’t know what I wanted to do…but did know I wanted out of Oklahoma. Ended up being a corpsman or nurse for three years…got out went to the art institute of Dallas and became a broadcast designer and animator. Did that for ten years had my son by myself and as a single mom, had to quit because of the hours when he got old enough for school. Would have never seen him which would have ruined him emotionally. I took art welding, I’ve done project management, web design and now at 55 the VA is paying for voc rehab and I’m doing photography…but I started painting in acrylics and oil after watching the videos by Milan Art Institute and am painting and loving it…I always tell people I’m 55 and I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up and I’m really okay with that…

I love your story! Very similar to mine. I’m 52 and I started getting back into art the graphic design way in 2016. In 2017 landed a great job that I loved. 2020 they layed me off, and me moved. In 2022 they hired me back and I was able to work from home. That job dried up last year at Christmas. This year I have been trying to improve my skills and realized I need to get back to drawing and painting. Which I absolutely love. Illustration gives me so much pleasure. I want to eventually get into surface pattern design. Getting the pencil back in my hands has been so liberating. So much better than drawing on my iPad. I do wish I could use the delete or go back button when I’m drawing. Creating art has been so freeing for me. My mind is thinking of what I want to create next. You motivate me to keep going.

i'm really glad i found this video. i'm 45 and just realized i want to start an art business, but that's where the certainty ends. i know an intense and potentially long period of artistic exploration is required now and although i'm excited about that, and can definitely give that to myself, it worries me to just have that time to myself - will it be worth it, etc. But i also realize that art is the only thing i've ever wanted to do. i spent my entire life believing i couldn't, and so now i still have that mindset and i'm working through all of that personal stuff as i reacquaint myself with the making process. it's just nice to know that older people are doing this too because although i've found some wonderful KZbin creators, they're all in their 20s and 30s and so there are big parts of what they do that are unrelatable. i'm excited to see where your journey takes you - and my own. :)

I wish you much luck. I say, you need a creative pivot point for the other related interests. Do not get too big too fast, or too scattered. You will be discouraged by the amount of work, having to hire personnel, etc. The one cost of doing business is a GOOD accountant. You must have one. They can do much of the work you have to do for the state and the feds.
