I discovered Bukowski's poetry when I was a teenager. I was browsing in a bookstore one day, and I decided to pick up one of his books. I was amused with the boldness of his words. He could write about something embarrassing in his life and not seem to care how his audience would judge him. I didn't like poetry at the time, but I liked his poetry because it was something that I could relate to. I was even inspired to write my own poetry. Thank you for your work, Mr. Bukowski.

Philosophy should be taught more in high school. There aren’t enough deep thinkers anymore. Everybody performs mindless tasks thinking they will benefit their futures when really it’s just another a cycle of performing dreadful tasks until you retire, then ultimately die after not living your ideal life. The time on earth you have is a beautiful gift that’s wrapped in dog shit. Life has great potential but naturally it sucks ass, and it’s those who think whether or not they’ll be happy following their current path that truly realize they need a change.

And after college or when we get a stable job in our late 20's we believe we're done, we figured it all out. We usually give up our dreams by then, because we're too old or it's too late or we should focus on different things like marriage, family etc. What I'm trying to say is, do what you love you're never too old. And even if it feels like nobody is appreciates your work, some day someone will.

To add to your point, the expectation to choose what to dedicate our lives to without any real life experience. Then to submit our identity to that thing. It’s a trap! Some peak at 15, others peak at 50. I love to see older folks who have kept their child like ambitions and curiosities alive.

@@ramenaddict1676 Media, particularly in North America, love to hyperfocus on the "outliers", whether precocious kids, oddball actors, athletes who seemingly have superpowers, the highschool geek who becomes one of the richest men in the world, or Oprah. Why? The obvious answer is that most media is commercial, and therefore it must attract as wide an audience as it can to serve up to advertisers, and any emotionally-charged variation on the freakshow theme will generally serve to do this. But I also think it goes beyond the commercial to the cultural. People seem to want visual media to alternately attract and repel them; the audience wants to both identify with and reject who and what they are seeing, to have their prejudices challenged and confirmed at the same time. It's hard for me to not see this as a type of psychological straight-jacket, as it would appear to make real growth or insight on the part of the audience next to impossible. I think The Sopranos is an excellent example of utterly brilliant social commentary that is missed by most of the audience because they are transfixed on individual characters, often to the point of taking on the speech patterns of one of the characters in their own life (I've actually seen adults do this), even if they've never even been to New Jersey, and even if they would never engage in criminal behaviour themselves.

I love his headstone because, just like I'm sure he thought would happen, ppl completely misunderstand it. Bukowski never tried to do any of the things he did. He never tried he just did it. Because he was doing what he wanted. He was trying to do anything, be anyone, or accomplish any feat. He wrote for the sake of writing and for the sake of saying what he really felt and thought. Yes, he sent out his works and writing but if it didn't work out he didn't give a flying fuck. He wrote because he couldn't help but write. The years he didn't write he damn near killed himself. When he spent the rest of his days always writing, he survived one of the most severe cases of alcoholism in the art world. Because art is the oil the burns within us to constantly drive the artist towards his unknown destination. Bukowski never convinced himself that he was less than if he didn't achieve some sort of arbitrary societal status because that's who he was. A blue collar grunt, who lived his life based on the reality at hand and nothing else, no delusions and no selfish desires, just unapologetically himself, and fortunately for us he decided to share what he wrote because why the fuck not. I love that the creator of this video understood what he really meant and was really all about. Phenomenal piece, my friend! Remember my brothers and sisters, Don't try. Do.

I think he mostly missed the point, which is clear from what Bukowski said in the rest of the letter and elsewhere. "...someone once asked him, "What do you do? How do you write, create?" To which, he replied: "You don’t try. That’s very important: ‘not’ to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more. It’s like a bug high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like its looks you make a pet out of it.” "We work too hard. We try too hard. Don't try. Don't work. It's there. It's been looking right at us, aching to kick out of the closed womb. There's been too much direction. It's all free, we needn't be told. Classes? Classes are for asses. Writing a poem is as easy as beating your meat or drinking a bottle of beer." He practiced this advice when he wrote. He'd just sit down, full of wine, and write without pausing in the middle of the poem. It wasn't work, he just let it flow. Then he'd wake up the next day and see what he had.

It's not that he didn't try, it's that he didn't try to be something he wasn't. He tried to be a writer but he didn't try to want to be a writer. Nor did he try to write the way he wanted to write. He just did it and kept doing it. Perhaps this is what he meant.

I think it was just a simple, though profound, piece of practical advice for creating. Of course, the advice can be used for other things, but you can tell what he meant by his own words: "Somebody asked me: "What do you do? How do you write, create?" You don't, I told them. You don't try. That's very important: not to try, either for Cadillacs, creation or immortality. You wait, and if nothing happens, you wait some more. It's like a bug high on the wall. You wait for it to come to you. When it gets close enough you reach out, slap out and kill it. Or if you like its looks, you make a pet out of it." And more of what was written in that letter: "We work too hard. We try too hard. Don't try. Don't work. It's there. It's been looking right at us, aching to kick out of the closed womb. There's been too much direction. It's all free, we needn't be told. Classes? Classes are for asses. Writing a poem is as easy as beating your meat or drinking a bottle of beer."
@sashabenariel15 жыл бұрын
I think its deeper than that. You have to consider why you try in the first place. Its not up to you. Its your hardware. What is the reason you feel stimulated to try, and what is the reason you feel incredible heaviness when you try with other things? This is your natural state. When you don't try, it allows your subconscious to effortlessly put effort into something. Its called "flow." It happens in nature. Study animals closely, and you can see them trying without trying. Its the conscious that gets in our way. Its the software that we've been conditioned to learn. Thats why meditation is so important. It awakens in you the voice that understands what you want and how to live in the flow. Thats what I believe he meant.

Nah fam this isn't supposed to mean anything, there's a lot of misconception about this especially given by his choice of words. What he actually meant was that he found a hobby that he likes really much to the point where he would still pursue it even with all the odds. This is typical artists moment, swear to God you can see this a lot in most artists, countless years even with decades of not getting recognized by the world.. wanna know why they still do it? Because their hobbies are fucking WEED it's drugs to them. Stay away from those people. When they say they can live without anything except their canvas and brush, trust me.. they'll do it. @@StarmenRock You're right. This was definitely out of context and may give everyone the wrong idea. We need to take from Bukowski's writings what seems useful and meaningful to our personal lives and leave the rest of it because even though he's a great writer, he may have sometimes wrote something that isn't inspiring or cool, maybe he meant something else entirely, etc. All of the philosophers are humans after all. I am literally in tears. It's somehow amazing how you can build tension by just a single, grim quote and the beginning. It feels hopeless, but the video builds up, and it builds up. And at the end of it, it reaches it's ultimate climax, while also talking and describing this amazing author's work. I have literally teared up and started crying, because that's my life's goal to actually "try, and go all the way with it". I want to accomplish one thing. I truly do. The wild thought of making my passion kill me and letting it kill myself is horryfing in all of the small steps that I'd have to take to actually accomplish it, but this quote took it in a somehow magic and eerie way, that you want to try. It has burned a light inside of me. Because I can't live with the thought of not achieving it. Something amazing, never seen a video like that. You can truly name this a motivational video, it's not a garbage that you see everywhere else on KZbin. I have never seen something like that. Close to perfection. Thank you, Pursuit of Wonder. Thank you for the light and showing me who this man was and what he meant. I feel like I am finally standing.

'Try' is an exertion of effort to push the curve of reality until it swells and includes your imagination in it. When we try, we are investing our time, money and energy into things we believe we deserve. This is where the fault lies. If we were to try, then, we are assuming that our imagination and dream are outside of our reality. Instead of doing that, we must assume we have already achieved them; they're already here, in our daily life, realized, materialized. We are them. Bukowski lived by this value. He failed time and time again to produce works that would make him a 'writer', yet he didn't stop because he already was a writer - that's his reality. It was the simply the mistake of the world for not being able to recognise it sooner. Anyhow, thanks for this video. It means a lot to me.
