In this video I am in Germany visiting the famous manufacturer of very high end Horn HiFi Speakers and electronics Avantgarde Acoustic. I am here to learn more about horn speakers as they have always fascinated me and I realised recently I knew very little about them.
It turned out that Avantgarde were in their final stages of their new flagship Trio Generation 3 speakers development with a planned 2022 launch. This was an ideal opportunity to spend some time with one of the Worlds best HiFi Horn speakers and a brand new amplifier technology called iTRON

One of my greatest pleasures in life is coming home and listening to my Avantgardes duo's. My tube amplification has evolved over the years, from an Audio Valve Conductor preamplifier mated to a Telefunken AD1 triodes SE amp to the current Western electric 91E. That is 25 years and the speakers are still perfect. So do not get discouraged with the price tag. I have said this to so many non HiFi friends you can just read it see it their facial expressions "your crazy. My reply "What I paid, is what you paid for your new car, which has long since gone.

Three factors to consider when considering Avantgarde horn speakers as they are fully open designed speakers: 1. Listening distance from the speakers 2. Your prefered Listening sound level 3. Prefered music genre. I have a local Avantgarde dealer about one hour away. In my humble opinion, they are great for those who enjoy a lively forward sound, for those who prefer to listen to music at under 80dbs ( more than 80 dbs require a substantial increase in Listening distance), for those who enjoy orchestral music. Lastly, for those who have deep pockets.

He is right about the first time you listen to horn speakers. In 1975 I got to listen to Klipsch K-Horns with a Marantz receiver and I told my brother in law that I was going to own a system like that. Today and for years I’ve been listening to a Marantz 2325 and Klipsch K-horns with a M&K sub up front on A, B Are Klipsch Belle’s playing as I’m running A+B in my listening room. I will tell you together they produce a Beautiful sound. They Blend and the Music becomes very full and realistic. My Marantz probably No does I’m sure restored as the capacitors are 50 years old . I do pull the cover off and take my air compressor to blow out all the dust and one of my lights went out last year but it still Rocks ! So when he says you will never forget the first time you hear that level of music for the first time I assure you that is the Truth ! I will own my system until I die then my children will own it. I know that they will never forget growing up listening to it. How many times did I hear please Daddy don’t turn it on it’s to loud ! I use to laugh and have them dance . Today I have grandchildren and when they are here it goes for them ! All my children are a gift from G d because they are such loving kind Adults. I think music and laughter had a lot to do with G d Blessing us all ! Alway Celebrate Life !

I read about horn=;faded systems decades ago, and from my understanding, a regular cone driver would cause a lot of inner-horn turbulence because of the timing of the waves as they start through the horn smearing the sound. Very nice system, Avantgarde.

He is definitely not talking trash or marketing blabla. I am a big horn fan, not necessarily Avantgarde but horns in general. I remember when I heard the Trio G1 in the 90s it was exactly the way he described it "you will never forget it". When I heard it in the 90s I thought that this is the least distorted music I've ever heard and I thought that this is the horn sound of the 21st century. I am more into the 20th century sound but that's just me and my personal taste, but undoubtedly they do a lot of things right.

If I don't remember wrongly, was Be Yamamura doing something like this in the 90s? That designer and company used horn loaded speakers with special amplifier technology. What I don't recall is that if he used a feedback of some sort to monitor the displacement of the drivers. This last technology, of the monitoring of the membranes, foremost in bass modules, I think, has been used for Infinity and Martin Logan loudspeaker brands. I pointed out just for background to your followers.

Avantgarde. Good speakers. For someone happy to house large speakers, the biggest downside is the cost, new and 2nd hand. Plus the bass on their more "affordable" models is not up to the high quality of their midrange and treble. More affordable horn systems that sound good can be had by going down the vintage used / DIY cherry picked USA speaker route.

Oh……. To fully respect what I ‘assumed’ I would be listening to I watched from the start, fascinated by Holger’s explanations then utterly disappointed by the fact we did not get to experience one of these systems playing. When you conveyed your excitement in “especially listening to it” I was following you on that journey only to end up at ‘Destination Nada’. I fully understand a sound can not be replicated by a KZbin video, however the nuances between traditional & Horn ‘can’ & also your ‘reaction’ to the sound & your description of it would have given this interview a ‘point’. I do not understand why there is no ‘audio experience’ of the predecessor ‘Gen 2’ of this prototype. If I have missed some description & a ‘link’ to a listening/demonstration video that for some reason could not be included in this video then please accept my apologies.

Avantgards are amazing sounding speakers. Unfortunately they’re not only ridiculously expensive, they’re very beamy waterfall plot, and mids and highs drop off like a rock off axis!!! Can’t theoretically move around the room and enjoy the sound , moving around, save sitting nearly directly in front of them!! One sweet spot, specifically. Not forgiving of placement. Only other option is placing them along the short boundary, and carefully towing them in to cover the room better. Otherswise, yeah.. world class sound reproduction in their element
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem 2 жыл бұрын
That is part of their design to focus the sound towards the listener like a wave guide and not towards everywhere else in the room which is not a good thing, that's how you have more room reflections and lose energy etc. I didnt now that before i attended
@erikalexander6602
@erikalexander6602 2 жыл бұрын
@@PursuitPerfectSystem That’s a very nice perspective that, of course, suits their design/sales philosophy! The horns are first and foremost made to reinforce and magnify the frequencies for more effortless transient response and overall efficient high sensitivity design for maxim dynamics across the full frequency spectrum, first and foremost! Make no mistake, the whole focused sound for less room reflection boundary interaction is not ideal for a flexible listening environment, period, but, IMO And one can most certainly address room acoustics and setup considerations to make ANY kind of loudspeaker work in a given space, basically!. So I think that “focused sound” position , presented as a design benefit isnt actually what would ideally be desired, all compromises considered. Sure you need less boundary reflection considerations to address with horns, but I’d gladly trade better dispersion if one could get similar dynamic transparency and impact through some other means, if that meant wider dispersion and more natural room filling sound, personally. To ea his own. Like I said, they’re world class for sitting anchored SOLO betwixt the speakers directly centered. Beyond that, no one else gets to enjoy the sound off to the sides. Deal breaker for most of my applications. Then there’s the price…

@@PursuitPerfectSystem - Then what are they going for? Maybe 120 decibels with only 5 watts of power? Because horns are ultra efficient, aren't they?

@@scotthullinger4684 it would be 120db at 1 metre from 1 watt with the trio which is crazy when you think about it

@@PursuitPerfectSystem - THAT loud? From just ONE watt of power? Yikes. I'd much rather take super in-efficient from my big Infinity speakers. THOSE speakers are as SMOOTH as silk. Who cares if I sometimes need 200 watts?

Easy to say horns are nearly perfect IF you don't care much about true imaging. In my opinion, horns have a very impressive sound, they create their own "reality" but they cannot "beam you there", where the live sonic event or the recording took place. Their size and huge spacing of their transducers make it impossible for them to become point-sources or even line sources, unless you listen from afar, in a very big room (which both negate their advantages over power-handling).Their imaging capabilities are vague and whimsical (the later is also true for spectral response of horns less evolved than Avantguard) and perhaps this is why the notorious pioneer of horns, Klipsch, tend to limit horns to strictly midrange/highs activity and also contain their refractory perimeters within the limits of their main bass bins. Don't get me wrong, I do like some of the damned horns. EVERYBODY like a beautiful lie!

Audio is all about sound and music. So you start to listen to music first. And you learn what sound is and which aspects it owns. I work over 23,5 years full-time in audio. And I had the luck that a friend had a concert room with a Steinway wing. Here he gave classical concerts. I learned that both voices and instruments are very small and direct. When you listen to any horn loudspeaker, you will understand and become aware that both voices and instruments are too big in proportion. But they also are rather 2-dimensional. The sound is also different compared to how voices and instruments in particular sound. The best loudspeakers can create a stunning 3DS holographic stage. And the best ones can even reveal diversity in height of voices and instruments. This means you will hear easily the difference in height of voices and instruments. Also, this aspect of sound can not be perceived by horn loudspeakers. So when we go back to the question of this article; "Horns the Ultimate Hi-Fi loudspeakers?" I don't think so. They are also not True High-End based on the fact that they cannot reveal all aspects of sound.

I get your point and agree. BUT: As important as tone, imaging and scale are equally important are the transparency, immediacy, fast attack and effortless sound production only horns offer. Inthe end, these dynamic aspects suck me into the music, give me the feeling if being just there, make the speakers disappear, just disperse sound which is in the room The ease and quick response, the effortless, clean, uncompromised and undistorted big presentation makes music more self-evidend. There is less strain. I wish horns would sound more beautiful in a way most people would connote this meaning with the word natural but natural sound is never beautiful but without strain, hassle, dynamic shortness or limitations of transient responses. This is exactly what makes real music sound real. It is the ease of sound dissipation and unrestrained, clean dynamics. Real instrumenta have vibrant energy and sound fast and can seperate complex sources and voices in a dense orchestra. In my experience only horns can do that. Yet tonally, they are not perfect. But great and accurate tonality is nothing when the believability of scale and dynamics is not there. Then the sound collapses and sounds dynamically limited. I always thought I would go with a Living Voice or ATC. They are working tools. But music reaches my heart when it is fast, effortless and overwhelming. I think what contributes or converts more easily to reality are clean transients, no distortion, high power handling, massive and quick driver systems. Natural tone is in the recording. It has to be translated into pressure waves without loss. There is no absolute truth. "True" color and tone versus dynamics, power, impact, scale and lack of any distortion.
