This is a look back on Purvis Short's career. Purvis Short had a knack for scoring and being a constant mismatch. With an elite jumpshot that would arch extremely high. Helping earn himself the nickname the rainbowman. Short would be the leader of the warriors for several season while seeing himself be a top five scorer in the league.

Thanks for this! At his peak, Purvis Short was a great overall scorer. And that rainbow jumper was just nasty (at 4:50 you can even see him connecting on a shot almost in 7’4’’ Mark Eaton’s face.. that’s crazy!)

Remember him from my youth. Definitely a forgotten player. Great scorer. One of my favorites as a kid. The rainbow man. One of the great nicknames. Have you done a video on World B Free? Andrew Toney? Sleepy Floyd?

I definitely remember this guy. In the 1980s only the Lakers scorers got press in the West Coast. Adrian Dantley and Alex English barely got press in those days.

San Francisco native 🌁 and Warriors fan. I agree 👍 with the title. Purvis Short had the misfortune to play during the Dr. J, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan eras. Then owner Frank Mieuli became a miser. The team did not want to play with Rick Barry, who had a growing ego. Joe Barely Cares. Nickname for JB Carroll. PS and Sleepy 😴 Floyd were good 👍 players. Sleepy became a superstar 🌟 in a defeat of the Lakers in a playoff year. GSW did not resurge until they got a new owner, a new head coach in Don Nelson and later draft Chris Mullin.

I first discovered Purvis Short cause of NBA 2K20 and it was during the height of lockdowns and all. Played 2K with my dad a lot during that time and glad I get to know more underrated players from the past mostly and present. The "glue guys" on their teams. My dad mistakenly told me that they're good so that's a disadvantage on him when we played 2K XD I didn't realize that it would be an advantage for me though cause I wanted to learn more NBA players

I miss playing against that style. 😅 Looks antiquated until they light you up with that awkward form with perfect release off the pass or dribble.

Skid Denver, thanks for all the videos on many great forgotten player. Can I recommend one of my all time favorite player? The late great Norm Van Lier. Van Lier may not have the stats that some of the others that you have profile, but few could match his feistiness. He was a perfect match for Chicago. Please consider Norm Van Lier. Thank you in advance.

The Joe Barry Carroll trade was not just one of the worst In Warriors history. It was one of the worst in NBA history. I can remember how it was mentioned often during telecast back then whenever Boston played(which was a lot back then ) The analyst always brought up the trade.

Purvis was nice at one end of the floor. He and Joe Barely Cares let anyone who wanted waltz the paint on them. He might have gotten 25 a game in a free wheeling era, but he'd surrender 30. Look at this murderers row of surgical mid-range assassins. And tell me how he makes an All Star team, i'll even throw in the SF from the East just to demonstrate how little serious consideration he deserved. You could say that by this purview, he came up short. West first: Dallas-Aguirre Denver- English/Vandeweghe Houston- McCray good defender, won playoff games Utah- Dantley San Antonio- Gervin LAL- Worthy/Wilkes LAC- Cummings then Marques Johnson PHX- Nance if they went big Seattle- Chambers/McDaniel Portland- Calvin Natt Sacramento-- he could feast .... By overall individual ability he was behind everyone here but McCray, Natt, and Sactos ....nobody ranked 10th at their position in the conference can justify the AS berth, particularly when they made precisely one playoff push in 1987 when Sleepy Floyd had himself a game or two. Check the East out, it would have been easier had Short remained in NJ, but he's still not getting on the squad. Boston- Bird Philly- Doc NY- Bernard King Bullets- Jeff Ballard....Short has this NJ- Albert King, Short was better Atlanta- Dominique Wilkins Bulls- Woolridge/ early Pippen Pistons- Tripucka Pacers- Person Cavs- nobody Bucks- Cummings/Johnson In the East he might have slotted in 6th if the team he was on won some games. So in the aggregate, we are discussing pehaps the 18th or 19th SF in the NBA during a time when the ballots were rigid with respect to positional flexibility (still frustrating voters with this rigidity even in 2023, how do you get left w a center choice between Giannis and Embiid?) I say 18th or 19th best because some teams had TWO guys better than him. It just goes to show that in a less talented, less democratic NBA, where it's a given that somebody was gonna have to be high usage. Somebody got to take the shots, and he was good enough to warrant the most on a poor team. Guys played 40 minutes a night too, whether that made sense or not. The depth was either ignored because the NBA had an entrenched paradigm of riding the starters, or the team had no depth to begin with. Players below replacement can't justify any sort of redistribution of shots. In 2023, given the same set of players, they would all be avg higher per/48 numbers as a function of having their minutes restricted. A coach isn't gonna stick with anyone who can't win their minutes.
