Extremely impressed with how you two handled that situation. >60% of most couples would have gotten snippy with each other. That shows a great recipe for a long lasting SOL mates. Love watching you too.

Hi Guys - Thanks for providing me with such a thrilling insight into the life I'd love to have but to wedded to home 'commitments' to take up! If its any consolation I share a 1981 built cruiser that we bought for peanuts, Solved the known issues including treating the Osmosis etc before we left UK. We are now on our way to Greece but only have 3 weeks a year on the boat. Every trip stuff breaks. I used to enjoy moaning about it at our home sailing club. One day one of my rich buddies with a new 55ft top of the range cruiser that was at that time in the Caribbean said "Brian its no different, every trip we make things fail and I spend half my cruising time fixing and replacing stuff'". I now consider it part of the challenge and half of the pleasure is overcoming the problems and keeping going! You guys have so much more skill and knowledge than we do you're bound to succeed. Keep it up and keep posting. Love you both!

Even after a shit sail, you both kept your cool, kept your relationship in good standing, and you were not having to go to a job you hate. I hope you have a better time of it on the next trip!!! Chris

Good decision to return, and well done for keeping calm and “working each problem” in an order that would keep you safe. I’ve been following for quite a while and I’m sure you could get Millie in a fit state to make the Azores, just perhaps not this season. People have done it in smaller, older boats. When I feel disheartened on a passage I turn to Robin Knox-Johnson memoirs. Never fails to inspire. As an aside you may wish to see the episode of Sailing Hilma when they lost their rudder to a reef whil entering a narrow passage. That is a problem I would not want. Chin up guys and carry on.

Guys, to a greater or lesser degree all cruisers have been in your situation. On a 12 month cruise I removed and reinstalled a genset 3 times, lost the main engine through injector failure and in the first day broke the jib halyard and put a birds nest in the forestay. Never underestimate the power of 2 - just having someone else there is worth a million bucks. Keep at it - it is worth it.

Actually the days when things go wrong are the best sailing days we have because they create lasting memories that you remember forever. Nice, calm, non eventful days are quickly forgotten. Sailing is mostly about 'confidence in yourselves first'. All boats (new or old) can have problems. Self-confidence in knowing you can deal with the problems is what matters most.

There are a lot of things in sailing and in life for that matter that you can't control. The one thing that you can control is how you treat each other. You have obviously figured that out. It's refreshing to see how you hold each other up when the other is down and when both of you are down you still realize how lucky you are to have each other. You are both great people and are even better together. You have riches that most people dream of, a really wonderful love and respect for each other. Serious challenges overcome. Well done! There are only two kinds of stuff on boats. Stuff that broke and stuff that is going to break. This was quite a flurry of the former but the latter applied to most of the stuff on the boat. The thing that doesn't break on a taught ship is the crew. You handled the problems well, stuck together and handled it -- and you now know you can. Congratulations on a successful resolution to a really harrowing experience.

So sorry to hear about all of the boat issues. Even while in the US Navy our boat with 88 men on it had a problem when we hit a typhoon between the Philippines and Vietnam and we lost the rubber seal to the bow door and started taking on watering onto our tank deck. So much water that our cargo started to float and the second night I saw one of our Navy issued life rafts break free of its moorings and slip below the ocean. Really gives a person lots of confidence. Glad that you both soldiered out of the situation.

Feel bad for you guys. Here is advice on the shaft. Install a drive saver. It's a rubber disk, goes between your transmission and prop shaft coupling. A set of bolts attach one side to tranny, another set of bolts to the coupling. Less torque needed, good if you snag a line around the prop..vibration could cause loose bolts as well. With the halyards, whatever shackle, snapshackle you use, I always use seizing wire as backup. Had same happen to me once in a bad time and place. Now I seize all of halyard shackles, never an issue after that. Good luck.. don't give up the ship. The Tayana will always take you home

Keep your chins up. Things will get better once you can fix a few problems. I would bet on the prop shaft having a very slight bend in it. Even the smallest bend will cause vibrations. I The nut needs pinning on once the shaft is checked and true. Hopefully you get things fixed up soon and can get away to your destination. Many old boats are sailing the oceans and they take a bit more upkeep than a newer model but many do it year on year so don't give up on Millie. Good luck with the repairs and hope to hear better news in the next video. Fair winds & regards from the UK

It sucks when everything goes wrong but remember, it could be much worse. You could be stuck at a desk, working 9-5 under artificial lightning just to reach some deadline that doesn't make any sense at all in the world. Enjoy the sailing life while you can, face the hardships the way you have shown you do before, even a bad day at sea usually beats most days working the hamster wheel. Older boats break down, newer boats break down, technology stops working, leaks appear, you've done a great job fixing the acute things and made the smart choice to go back. Make the smart choice to fix things, one at a time and then get going again. I've got a 1976 S&S 35 footer, I know things will stop working and already have, I am working at finding small stupid leaks, failing autopilot etc and while I am safe in the harbor I'm fully aware of the fact that I rather be at the boat, fixing problems, than stuck here at work. Good luck and keep up the spirits and put on another beautiful smile! /Rasmus

Problems happen, that is life. You guys coped spectacularly and made a prudent choice IMHO. The Azores will be there whenever you and Millie get there. If I could recommend, perhaps a flexible(i.e. rubber block) coupling between the gearbox and the propshaft flanges would help with the vibration? With the voltage issue, check in order - all battery terminations tight and not corroded, main battery cables including interlinks are not showing signs of corrosion or heat damage, charging cable ok (check resistance with ohmmeter), likewise charging return cable or connection via hull ground, check any voltage sense wires and/or temperature sensors, check connections on current shunt for ammeter or power monitor, if flooded cells - electrolyte levels - electrolyte density - look for collapsed plates, all batteries off load and on load cell voltages (should all be same). Wishing you the very best of luck.

Unfortunately, sometimes that's life. Big thumbs up for going through this together like a couple. You are doing great, boat however, not so much. Big thinking and decision ahead of you, hold on there and stay strong.

Only 2 reasons to panic on a sailboat: 1) You wake up in the middle of the night a see a large freighter less than 100 feet away and heading straight towards you. 2) you go downstairs and there is 2 to 3 feet of water down there. Much else should be taken with a grain of salt.
