I think they mean what you expect VS what your cat actually wants. So you buy your cat a fancy scratch post but they just want to scratch the furniture.

Scent marking is important to cats; it's their first means of identifying safe and familiar things. If your cat sleeps on your clothes instead of its bed, try using the catbed like a pillow or hold it with you when you sleep. Once it smells like you the cat will likely recognize it's safe and familiar. Or it could just get jealous of the bed and tear it up instead, I dunno.

Seems like I heard a story about someone got a scratching post to try and get their cat to leave the furniture alone. It worked, kind of..... Turns out the cat was afraid of the scratching post, so they put it next to anything they wanted the cat to stop scratching 😂
