I used to pick up boats with a 3500 Dodge and a boat trailer. When the boat is properly balanced on the trailer, the trailer could be pulled by just about anything with a sufficient weight rating, however, if the trailer is tail heavy, even a 3500 dually can have a problem with a 4000 lb load.

I like seeing you check hubs and tires when you stop. I like carrying an infrared temp gun and shooting them. It will pick up smaller differences in temp than your hand, so you can catch a bearing heating before it's bad enough to feel by hand. You can also catch a tire that's a little low on air, as it will be a few degrees warmer.

So I know this is an older video. I've been watching your channel a lot while away from home. I just snagged a 2018 3500 dually and it's awesome to see one doing work like this. I know you don't use this bumper pull a lot in videos at least that I've seen. Mind doing a little walk around / build talk about it? I'd love to upgrade from my PJ(made in Mexico) and I think Diamond C is the ticket. Especially after seeing one of their fleetneck trailers in person that a friend owned. Also watching your videos has got me really thinking about starting a similar business somewhere post military career.

You need to double check your tires on that new trailer. They are not super singles (235/75x17.5) 6k rated, yours are (215/75x17.5) or 4800 lbs rated. It gives me heart burn that Diamond C would down grade a 10k axle with those tires.

I have 14k 24ft lowdeck gooseneck. I love it too. I was looking for new and guy was trading in year old trailer for larger one. He had custom ordered it with features they won’t do anymore. Got it close to half price of new one. I have towed it from Texas to Knoxville and all around this state been great so far. Best trailer I have ever owned.

@V-BELT and SON Hey Sam, I just bought the exact same trailer but 24ft and max ramps. I have a 2020 3500 just like the charcoal one in the beginning of this video. Truck is a beast and so is the trailer. Only issue I have is towing it empty, it causes my truck to bounce/buck real bad... I think it’s just the extra weight of the max ramps on the back and the light weight of the trailer combined with the length of the truck and trailer, causing a see-saw type motion pivoting at the hitch. If I carry my 800 lb grapple bucket towards the front of the trailer, it’s smooth. So I’m gonna play with different weights either in the front box or close to the hitch, to find the unloaded towing sweet spot. Just curious if your towing the LPX with the 3500 is bouncy too?

Don’t buy a bumper pull for this kinda weight if you plan on going up hilly gravel roads, you get off the pavement with this much dragging behind you and idk what you have 4wd or not unless it’s a loaded dump truck you’re not getting up a steep gravel hill, learned the hard way, I wish I had got a gooseneck dump trailer 16k bumper tow dump loaded down with 5-6tons of gravel behind a 4wd f450 and my driveway is steep, I can make it 75% of the time, buyers remorse even though realistically 95% of the places I got it’s fine

I’ve got a 2020 Ram 3500 standard output Cummins Aisin cab & chassis and the transmission is horrendous. I came from a 2020 GMC 3500 with the 10 speed Allison which probably spoiled me. My Ram Aisin slams into gear at times, falls on it’s face in 1-2 & 2-3 shifts, shudders while shifting periodically and the dealer says it’s normal for an HD truck. Definitely a huge disappointment for such high expectations. I should’ve found a nice 2018 before Ram decided to screw up the Cummins with the cp4 pump and obvious transmission issues I guess. The only true bright spot is the awesome exhaust brake!

Bought a 20k curt hitch for my 2012 f350 srw a while back, with proper weight distribution/trailer w/good brakes I’m confident I could tow that no problem, and I’ve got the 6.2l gas engine, I’ve towed 16k regularly on the “bumper” hitch no problems, the stock hitch was down rated for 12,500 which was maxed out with my car trailer and a truck on it 🙄 but yet the 5th wheel hitch was rated for 20k? 7,500lb tongue weight? I think not, not on this truck, I think manufactures stick stickers on their for liability reasons, just be smart and drive responsibly....
@Grggeorge
@Grggeorge 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I see these stickers I mean thought of adding steel and drilling a 2nd pin hole for the 16-20,000 pound tongue pull on the 450 gas, I still can’t believe how they rate things why don’t they make things three times the size to make sure it will do a 20 ton pull without failure
@sblsbl7600
@sblsbl7600 3 жыл бұрын
Bumper pull is a misleading term. As you know you are actually towing with a hitch attached to the frame. Older generation trucks had 3 holes in the bumper in front of the license plate where you could attach trailer balls. It was for very light trailers. A lot of bumpers were bent this way. It wasn't safe.

Everything being done here is safe. Class A CDL experienced driver / owner op , new power unit, new trailer. All cargo weighs under manufactured limits. The only issue you will get hammered for is the lack of weight fees. Default pickup weight rating with PTI (Perminant Trailer Identification) trailer license plates only cover up to 10K lbs. More than 10K GVW the trailer needs to be registered annually to cover weight, or pay for an adequate CVRA sticker for the 3500 that will cover the combined max GCVWR of both Truck and Trailer. 54K sticker is most common because more than that requires the extra highway vehicle use tax as well.

So, you pretty much know your shit. I asked the local commercial salesman, who said per the engineering department, that the tow rating for the big trucks (5500) is the same for gooseneck or bumper pull if you upgrade with a proper rated hitch. What are your thoughts on this? I’m currently in a friendly argument with my boss about this. I don’t know if it’s the same for his beloved Fords or not. Just curious about your opinion.

Factory hitch receiver will eventually start to bend down with pin weight north of 1,200lbs. ... from my experience at about 30kmiles towing as I recall. Ended up with a super hitch, that adds on to the factory to give you a double shank, no issues at 100k ish Just keep an eye on it, but otherwise stay safe enjoy.

Was hauling some farm equipment from the shop in Reno back to cowboy country and he decided to check my license because of the equipment. Showed him my CDL and MEC . He explained that they are being more prudent with checking because some hotshot was rolling through and had a permit for CDL and was over weight. the main difference between the 3500 and the 4500 is the 3500 has 16inch wheels with a 8 lug bolt pattern and a lighter frame . the 4500 has 19.5 wheels with a 10 lug bolt pattern meaning they can fit bigger brakes the wide track front axle and a stronger frame. you would pretty much have to change axles over to put 4500 brakes on a 3500.

I know in my gas truck, up a hill with a heavy trailer it does very little to go from say 1/3rd throttle to full throttle, unless it is for the kick down. Does a turbo diesel act the same way, or does more pedal get you more boost?

Normally in my 5500 I only go 80% throttle. Anymore it will heat up the egts to much
@MrFredboy
@MrFredboy 3 жыл бұрын
Little different with a diesel, but that isn't so much building boost as it is just the fact Cummins have all of their torque super low in the power band being a big bored inline 6 so you'll feel more power in a gear, especially overdriven gears. But EGTs can become an issue on a diesel holding a high gear at high throttle with lower RPM

@codyg7936
@codyg7936 3 жыл бұрын
Well you know the lagging feeling you’re talking about, more throttle results in a little bit more torque, when you’ve got a diesel due to the nature of design/fuel consumption you’ll be able to feel more lag, you can give it more throttle and feel a little more performance, add a turbo and you can add more throttle and gain even more performance, you get into loading up a 15l semi and you can feel the engine mounts progressively torque as you add throttle and load up the turbo, especially with Cummins engines they’re designed to run lower oil pressure and peak torque is much lower rpms than comparable V block designs, keep in mind lower rpms means lower oil pressure, more blow-by and higher oil temp and the exhaust gas lingers longer heating up the engine coupled with unburnt fuel and you can achieve damaging egts in under a minute with a good size load, especially if it’s trying to regen, every turbo diesel truck should have a pyro gauge IMO for the exhaust manifold not the exhaust gases themselves that way you can see exactly what the engine is seeing, having it inside the manifold won’t tell you much because gases can easily reach 1,600F temporarily and having it on the turbo isn’t accurate since the exhaust has had time to cool a little

With the trailers I have looked at when you go over 14 k on the trailer on of two things happen that are very obvious 1 you get a third axle or two the axle goes to a duel tire set up with 4 tires per axle.
