it never hurts to have an old woodmizer sitting in your back yard, the earlier ones can be had fairly cheap. there is some nice dunnage in those logs. lt40 or lt40 super would be the ones to look for imho. also, you can saw logs in the winter.
@davidforrest3996 жыл бұрын
Welder Bob i was thinking the same thing... Hopefully one day Andrew can get a sawmill and saw his own lumber. A friend of mine picked up a LT40 and we've sawn some amazing stuff with it. Figured hemlock, curly cherry, birdseye walnut!! All from "trash logs" that others thought weren't worth the effort.

Great work Andrew. If I may make one constructive comment, there is no need to angle your back cuts. They should be level. Sloped back cuts make the tree more likely to split into a “barber’s chair”, especially if there is a lot of force encouraging the tree to fall(pushing, pulling or a pronounced lean). Stay safe and love the dogs and content.

Yo Andrew, good to see a new video up!Quick tip, if you cut stumps with the back of your bar it will compress and leave the chips in the cut and keep the stump from pinching. It seems slower but in the end its not really.We all learn from each other and I always take away some tidbit or another from your vids so i'm sharing :-)

Hey my friend i am an experienced tree cutter and i have to say i felt a little uneasy watching you make the angled back cuts. Id reccomend you learn how to make a traditional humboldt face cut and the proper back cut. It will be much safer and more predictable!

Nice job. Yanmar pushes well. Tucked the mess into the brush out of site. Sawmills are concerned about logs from home sites and driveways. They tend to have nails and wire in them. Make sure the log buyers understand that you know how to look for metal, and won't send them logs with metal. Your use of a sloped back cut concerns me. If you're worried about a tree leaning back, get a few wedges. A sloped back cut might not hold the tree. If the holding wood on a back leaner snaps tree could slip off the stump. Use a back cut perpendicular to the stem and start a wedge as soon as possible. Be careful, stay safe.

Another great video as usual. Thanks Andrew! I noticed 2 things and was curious; 1 why didnt you wear chaps or safety pants? They are cheap insurance compared to the cost of an injury. Please consider getting chaps at minimum, i'd hate to see you injured. I personally prefer saw pants to chaps, more comfortable and better protection. Second ive noticed in a few videos that youve made your back cut angled. Why? It is way less efficient, you have to cut through more wood than if you just go perpendicular to the trunk. If felling using wedges it lessens the efficiency of the power of the wedge to lift. Also it has the potential to be very dangerous if the tree is back-weighted, as the longer angled back cut creates more force against the hinge wood increasing risk of failure (longer lever). Not commenting to be safety police, just dont want to see you hit any trouble that will prevent you from making more great videos to enjoy. Thanks again. All the best. (edited to fix terrible spelling mistakes from typing from my phone)

A straight back cut is a much safer technique than the slanted back cut. With the slanted back cut it puts way more stress on the hinge wood than a traditional straight back cut. Great job though!
@CarrotCaptain6 жыл бұрын
I was going to write this same comment. The slanted cut can allow the tree to slide off the stump. Some people will cut on a slant to keep the tree from sliding backwards when pushing trees.It would be better to cut above the hinge about an inch high with a level backcut to create a shelf so the log cant come backwards off the stump.

Andrew; would you sell your little yanmar excavator without all the electronics? If so, for around what ballpark figure?
@davecalvo64186 жыл бұрын
Andrew, you banged that job out quick with no issues. I know from experience that most saw mills just don't want anything to do with "yard trees" as they typically have some hardware in them and it wreaks havoc on the mill blades. Is that Husky an "XP" I only run the XP series as they are commercial saws and rev much higher than those homeowner Husky's
@AndrewCamarata6 жыл бұрын
357xp, decent saw, always leaks bar oil though. Yeah, mills wouldn't want that if I said it was near a house.
@davecalvo64186 жыл бұрын
That is an all around good saw, big enough to do most jobs, FYI it seems like all my Huskies leak bar oil, not sure why that is but its kind of annoying as it makes a mess.

How many hours B50 and Komatsu had when you bought them? Is there a threshold of hours where the used ones are going to break more and it is reasonable to buy a newer one than to fix the old ones all the time? Do you even watch the hours when you buy a machines like those?

beautiful logs, a crying shame if they are wasted. What you are doing with the chain saw cutting like that is very dangerous ,you cut your scarf ,then a parallel with the ground cut above it so there is a hinge for the tree to fall in the direction of your scarf cut. Cutting down hill forces you to cut into the scarf which will often make the log jump backwards....into the saw operator.
@ny10b3j5 жыл бұрын

How long did that job take in real time? I'm guessing maybe 3-4 hours? Mind telling us how much you charge for a job like that? I'm always interested in price differences between locations. Down here in NC that'd probably be a $200-$300 job.
@AndrewCamarata6 жыл бұрын
I was there less than 3 hours. Only 200-300? I charged much more than that. I wouldn't do a risky job so quick. If they were not in danger of hitting anything it would have been much cheaper.
@johnc67986 жыл бұрын
That makes sense...more risk requires a higher price. Things are generally cheaper here in NC compared to when I lived in western NY. Thanks for the reply and great vids man.
@petehiggins334 жыл бұрын
I've never cut a tree down in my life but I can see why making the back cut at an angle could be bad news. By doing this you are creating a ramp sloping forwards. If you accidentally cut too far i.e. into the front cut or if the hinge breaks for some reason then the tree will drop onto that ramp and slide forwards. If you're lucky it will just drop onto the ground and stop there but if you're unlucky then, because the centre of gravity is above the excavator bucket it will pivot about the bucket and fall over backwards tipping the excavator over as it goes and throwing you under the falling tree. If the back cut is horizontal then there's no force pushing the base of the tree forward although it might stll fall sideways.
