You can make a Fighter/Thief/Mage in this game. Start off as a Fighter, then put points into Magic and Climbing. You lose out on Zap but that is all. Then when you import this character into II you magically get zap, though I think you lose you shield, but you can but a new one. This really helps out in III.

That was a good review Roses. One thing though, you never need to run from anyone in this game. That is because one of the first grinds you need to do is go to the clearing with unlimited goblins and keep killing the little suckers until you are a total badass. This works no matter which profession you chose. As a result the warrior is probably the most useless character to play while the wizard is the easiest, especially when it comes to solving the puzzles. The thief fits somewhere in the middle and depending on how you feel about stealing the most fun to play.
@Erik-vp5bm4 жыл бұрын

Some random tidbits: - Stealth is levelled up by screen transition. If you go to (say) the top of town and wiggle back and forth in sneak modes, it'll level your stealth up faster. - Even doing this stealth isn't super useful - There's a lot of stuff in this game that you can do even as the 'wrong' type - fighters and mages can access the thief guild by blurting possible passwords - If you HAVE Magic as a stat, you can still play Mage's maze with Erasmus - If there's something unique for fighters in this game I legit cannot think of it - The cartwheeler is the Brigand Warlock! God, I loved this game. Thanks for the video!

I guess the manual that came with the game would have been helpful. Never thought about that until this video actually, but I began playing this game before I could barely read! Took me years to beat. I remembered my grandma was proud, annoyed, and mad with a mixture of: I beat it before she did and I didn't beat it with her. My reaction was "What?? I have to beat the game again??" Changed my perspective on gaming entirely. Thank you for the retrospective, PushingUpRoses!
@JosephDavies6 жыл бұрын
It's something I know a lot of people overlook when playing classic games from this era: the manuals are meant to be read. Many times the game not only expects this, but requires it. It was not yet an accepted practice to feature entirely in-game tutorials and interface lessons, and in many cases it was also simply not technically feasible. It's a difference in expectations at the time. After all, if you owned a computer or gaming console at this time, you were very likely to have read a lot of documentation merely in the process of being a _user_ (in the TRON sense, not in the modern consumer sense). Of course, youth such as yourself had a very good excuse. ;) My younger brothers played these games as they were learning to read & write, and frequently asked us how to spell words so that they could type them in. Eventually they didn't need to do this anymore. It was subversively quite an edutainment title!
@Spaced924 жыл бұрын
@@JosephDavies Oh yeah even up until Metal Gear I believe there was something that required you to look at the back of the case or manual. Given we often needed the CD keys to play PC games it was a reasonable assumption that you had the manual.
@JosephDavies4 жыл бұрын
@@Spaced92 That's a good point! For games of a certain era, you kept that manual if for nothing else than you'd be unable to even start without it!

Love the humor in this video, I laughed quite a bit. Also this is making me remember Spoony's Ultima retrospective. I love these look-backs at old PC games. They're the kinds of games that would have, should have, been my jam (pretty much all the Sierra and LucasArts Adventures games you've talked about and the aforementioned Ultima series) but because we never had a decent computer for gaming growing up, I missed out on a huge portion of PC gaming from the late 80s, early 90s.

A friend from school gave this game to me second hand back in 6th grade. Just the disks, no manual. I couldn't feel any sense of nostalgia at 11 years old and I played as a Magic User, but it looks like we had a very similar experience over all. It was a blast to explore and talk to these characters! It felt alive, like anything could happen! But my poor mage body couldn't survive combat so there was a lot of running away from things. Good times. This game really does have a place in my heart. And my hands, since it forced me to learn to type at a respectable speed.

It's really great that these games are still getting so much love and time. I loved them as a kid, sadly somehow now I don't enjoy them as much. But it's great that they're still enjoyed and loved. It's also gotta be one of the most charming old-school artstyles ever. GoG has been teasing me with MYST and the sequels forever now and I'm afraid of going back and not liking them as much as back in the day :P This is gonna be an interesting series, thumbs up!

Glad I stumbled into your channel! So nostalgic seeing you cover all these old Sierra games! Been wanting to play them again! I used to pick fighter as my character, but feed points into the wizard and thief traits so I could do everything, lol.
