Can you possibly imagine what the members of the band thought when they first started rehearsals!!!!!!!????? End result to that: They nicknamed her "the boss". In the beginning of the video you saw the band director being handed a piece of paper and he smiled. It was changes Angelina wanted the band to make. (She was 9 years old.) She's a natural. She has been quoted as saying the most comfortable she is in life is when she is singing for people. No one like her. I don't think there was ever anyone like her.

All her other performances of this song are more inline with Screaming Jay Hawkins they are not as serious but kind of Campy,in a trying to be a little spooky, God Bless!

I would agree, this is the best version I have ever heard. I think it is more true to the original intent of the song and more true to Screamin Jay's original than most others.. Hawkins originally intended the song to be a ballad, but lots of drinking the night of recording resulted in the birth of "Screamin" .

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she want to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. Angelina made some notations on the production notes at the beginning of the session. The producer smiled because she always phrased her instructions as a hope or suggestion (wouldn't it be nice if we could...). You'll sense the same behavior in the clip recommended above.

The writing was her "wishes" for changes to the arrangement. Wishes made the conductor laugh. The greatest performance ever. Barely 9 and does her own arrangements. Hence why the band calls her The Boss. Totally in charge. Pure Genius.

@pa1189j I've heard her singing this song as well, on several other clips. Note how she mutes/shortens her growls quite substantially. I also don't believe that she lost this ability in the following year(s). This goes hand in hand with remarks received from vocal coach(es) as to the potential damage that can be caused by overstressing a young voice. The damage that can occur to the vocal chords can be permanent. Thankfully, we've certainly heard some of her amazing growls since then, as in the case of "Feeling Good." It was great to hear from you.

@@Christian-DH Hi Christian. Yes the styling of the song has changed/evolved. I'm not sure I've seen any evidence that she received any advice about this from a vocal coach. It always seems that artists are reluctant to reveal that sort of information, and perhaps that's a two way process, where the coach prefers to remain out of the limelight. Some of the very best like Tony Bennett (RIP), Sinatra etc all kept coaches to help them steer their voices through the process of ageing.

Thank you for reacting to my request. Angelina was 9 years old in this video. This was her own arrangement paying tribute to the original artist Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Many people don’t know that Sreamin’ Jay Hawkins was a boxing champ. He joined the army at age 13 using forged ID. He was a formidable opponent in the army and later in the airforce boxing circuits. He won several boxing golden glove awards mostly in his hometown of Cleveland. In 1949 he won Alaska’s middleweight title. If I was a boxing referee, I would say that 9 years old Angelina Jordan just delivered him a TKO. LOL Thanks again for this enjoyable reaction video and keep up the good work.

It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding through music in a splendid way, especially for these legendary songs. She is definitely the only 9-year-old girl who understands and has the courage and the ability to sing this song from Screaming' Jay, so imbued with his power, and reorganize it according to her musical sensibility and vision. Thank you for featuring Angelina again. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZbin, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

I also thought she was 10 yrs old when I first heard this, based on the date of the video. Other fans let me know that the audio was actually recorded the year before, when she was 9. Amazing, right? The arrangement, which is her own, honors Screamin' Jay but mixes his genius with a more melodic foundation. I understand the other musicians and the production team for this recording all called Angelina The Boss. Thanks for that wonderful reaction video, Judy. You've made my day. 🙂 Imho she had natural vibrato ever since her recordings when she was 6 years old. The only performance that struck me as slightly 'unnatural' was her cover of "summertime" at NGT, but I think she purposely used much vibrato there. That's just my opinion.

*Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East.
