I was in Kramatorsk around July of 25th and a man on a tram asked me, an American, what was happening in the war. He said he didn’t know. Ukrainians don’t know what is happening about how well the war is going or not. I answered the Ukrainians were doing good. This attack inside russia has supported my view and it certainly has given a high boost to morale of not just soldiers but civilians. I didn’t speak to every person I met in Ukraine between June 21st and August 10th but those I spoke to had some connection in aiding Ukraine from their loved one in the army to volunteering in a number of different ways.

To say Russia is winning is simply ridiculous. Fact is that since the beginning of the war Russia is loosing: lost the battle of Kiev, lost large parts of land around Kharkiv in fall 2022, lost the black sea fleet to the point that it is no longer participating in the war, lost 24% of its refinery capabilities (so far) that can not be repaired to large parts due to the sanctions. Now lost over 1000km2 in Kursk region. And lost nearly 600'000 of its own soldiers and mercenaries from many different countries for marginal and strategically insignificant land wins in the Donbas - not to mention all the destroyed military material. And this is just the beginning of the downward spiral. There is no longer a competitive economy, just a war economy where production is paid by the state. Putin will go down in history as the crazy guy who destroyed the Russian Federation. Russia cannot win this war, and the west must defeat this criminal and corrupt regime that attacked a friendly neighbour based on historical lies. The west must not be deterred by Putins nuclear blackmail. Russia is weak and small compared to Europe or the US. The only thing big about Russia is the landmass which is to 90% unproductive.
