Day 210.
Today, we discuss Vladimir Putin’s extraordinary speech this morning, ordering a partial mobilisation of 300,000 Russian reservists and claiming that he is not bluffing on the use of nuclear weapons. What is his strategy? And how should the West, and the wider world, respond?

Putin needs to be deposed by the Russian people. If that won't or can't happen then NATO/OTAN must do it. Assume the loss of several large Western cities then several days of waiting for all our nuclear war. Will it happen. I Pray to God it won't. And I'll be writing my lawmakers in Olympia, local, and Washington DC, federal, telling them what I think.

The nuclear thing I find interesting for two reasons: 1) Whenever Putin mentions it, he knows the words echo in the West. In podcasts like this, in the pub, round the dinner table, at the water cooler. That's innate, because we have an open society and the idea of nuclear war is visceral for us. 2) I don't understand why it doesn't draw more reaction from India and China. If there were to be a nuclear exchange, even involving a middle nuclear power like the UK or France, and even if India or China were not a target, it's highly likely that hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people would be killed instantly. Opinions vary, but a nuclear winter might kill billions more, many of them Chinese or Indian. We keep hearing that China likes stability, but the Putin regime is the entity in the world that is doing the most to threaten stability - Biden, Truss and Macron aren't addressing their nations and making veiled nuclear threats. Also, your point at 55:00 - he'd also draw the wrath of Ukraine themselves. I keep saying this but as much as he's claiming to be showing restraint, so are they. There are many thousands of Ukrainian troops who have dutifully stopped at the Russian border when retaking territory to avoid escalation, but once Putin's fired a nuclear weapon they no longer have anything to lose, so they might as well swell everything they have and cut the head off the hydra in Moscow.
@radoomiron93

"Opinions vary, but a nuclear winter might kill billions more, many of them Chinese or Indian." That is not true. Bear in mind that we already had thousands of nuclear bombs blown up in tests, including some really huge ones, like the Tsar Bomba. Over 500 of those bombs were blown up in the atmosphere (not underground, in water or in space).

There are details about who will be mobilized. I've seen copies of it discussed online. There are potentially 3 waves, depending on the previous rank in the Russian army, where everyone serves. 1st Wave is 35 years old for rank and file, the age goes up by rank. In the second wave it's 45, third wave it's 55. Females are also conscripted in the third wave scenario. Obviously, Russia is at the 1st wave currently.

If Russia is losing to 'NATO' utilizing Ukrainian soldiers now, what would the situation be for Putin if his forces engaged with NATO battle groups staffed by actual western forces? His military would be pushed back or steamrolled in short order. NATO is partially equipping Ukrainian forces, not engaging directly in a kinetic way. Putin should think about that very carefully, as all he has left is nukes, and other countries have the same weapons available should it be required.
@davidbarry6900
@davidbarry6900 Жыл бұрын
Peter Zeihan has talked about this since February. Ever since the Russian parade to Kyiv fell apart after a week, the NATO military have been aware that they could totally cut through the Russians (with proper NATO forces, appropriately prepared) and capture Moscow within a couple of weeks. This is why it is SUPER important to contain the fighting to Ukraine, with Ukrainian soldiers doing the fighting, and have them destroy the Russian army there. If NATO proper ever got involved in the fighting, it would go nuclear really fast as soon as the Russian army collapsed and fled.

I detected a rare hint of disagreement this time between Roland and Dom over the likelihood of Putin using a nuclear strike if all else fails to avert defeat. Dom discounted the military utility of a battlefield strike, but I feel that Putin might instead attack a civilian target - like Zelensky's home town. As for losing the support of China and other countries, Putin is already ruining Russia and is destined to complete the job as the War drags on, so I doubt that this will deter him

Ukraine can also expand their military and train them for 3 months. If Ukraine is smart, they will send 5,000 of their UK trained soldiers to the front lines to help, andthe remaining 5,000 to be instructors to train new Ukrainian recruits. Maybe 5,000 newly trained troops plus 1,000 experienced troops from the front lines could easily train 50,000 to 150,000 new Ukrainian recruits while the UK trains another 10,000 troops.

@@paareth, Russia is already unable to properly supply 150,000 soldiers in Ukraine, so how will they supply 300,000 more? Russia’s logistics suck. Ukraine already keeps blowing up their weapons depots and supply lines. This just means that the weapons depots will have to have 3x more artillery for larger explosions. When were the majority of Russia’s nuclear weapons made? How many are from the Soviet Union era? How well have they been maintained since 1091? Do they still work? Has Putin manufactured any nuclear weapons after 1991? How many?
