“32 nations in Nato last week did the same, stepping up long-term commitments to support Ukraine, which are important to Ukraine, but also a powerful signal to Putin.”
The UK will provide military aid to Ukraine "for as long as it takes”, says defence secretary John Healey.

When Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal, U.S., the U.K. and Russia guaranteed Ukraine's security in a 1994 agreement known as the Budapest Memorandum. Ukraine was told at the time that the United States and Western powers - so certainly at least the United States and Great Britain - take their political commitments really seriously. This is a document signed at the highest level by the heads of state. So the implication was Ukraine would not be left to stand alone and face a threat should it come under one. Ukraine has accused Russia of violating the agreement with its 2014 annexation of Crimea, and again with the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia just glibly violated the agreement. The narrative in Ukraine, publicly is: We had the world's third-largest nuclear arsenal, we gave it up for this signed piece of paper, and look what happened. And it really doesn't look good for the international non-proliferation regime. Because if you have a country that disarms and then becomes a target of such a threat and a victim of such a threat at the hands of a nuclear-armed country, it just sends a really wrong signal to other countries that might want to pursue nuclear weapons. The guarantors - the signatories of the Budapest Memorandum especially but also the international community more broadly - needs to react in the way as to not make Ukraine doubt in the rightness of that decision. EVEN CHINA gave Ukraine a nuclear security guarantee. In December 2013, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping signed a bilateral treaty and published a joint statement, where China reaffirmed that it will provide Ukraine with nuclear security guarantees upon nuclear invasion OR threats of invasion. THESE NATIONS are HONOUR-BOUND TO STAND BY THEIR WORD IN PROTECTING UKRAINE. UKRAINE should not have to keep asking for weapons to defend itself. If it had kept its nuclear arsenal, it would not have to.

They weren't Ukraine's nuclear weapons, they were Russia's nuclear weapons which happened to have been stationed there. And the Budapest Treaty was a very bad treaty which revealed itself to be a recipe for disaster almost before the ink had dried on the signatures.

Ukraine doesn't want to 'win' in the sense that word is usually used these days - it just wants to survive. When the 'winning condition' is being presented as claiming lots of territory that wasn't yours originally more often than not in this context then using it implies Ukraine conquering/Invading Russia. And saying that isn't wise when so many of of Russia's 'Friends' are not willing to really openly commit to helping them right now.

Why are politicians so naive. Putin is not sensitive for words. Putin is only sensitive for deeds. If the UK drives the start-up of the production of the Taurus, by ordering several thousand of units, than Putin will become nervous. Moreover, in stead of every country making its own systems, maybe it is an idea to start standardisation of weapons and weapon systems, by collaborating with e.g. Nordic Nations. This allows economy of scale, significantly reducing costs. The UK, Scandinavian, Baltic and Netherlands have a similar view. Use this to standardise weapons but also to speak as one block. Most of all, Europe is lacking leadership. If the UK can lead a Nordic Alliance, this will be most fearful for Putin.

Trident has failed the last 2 times we tested it. Have a guess how many Russia has in the field right now. Hmmm? No? Over 100 Brigades and full strength ones at that not paper ones like Ukraine has. 30,000 men joining up every month. several hundred tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery pieces and untold thousands of shells. The entirety of NATO hasn't even been able to match a fraction of the Russian production after over 2 years! Don't worry though, it'll all be over before too much longer. Russia is 2-4 years away from exhausting their Soviet stockpiles of artillery launchers, tanks, and APCs. At that point, new production will only be enough to field a quarter of the equipment they have on the front lines now. Also within a few years, Ukraine may have enough F16s in the air to deter the platforms launching gliding bombs, and Russia will have spent all of their war chest which allows them to offer high salaries to poor conscripts, drying up their recruiting ability. That combination of factors is where the end comes from -- Russia is desperately trying to advance at ridiculous loss rates, because their only hope is to trick the West into thinking Ukraine is losing, and capitulating before Russia inevitably runs out of resources.

Do you see the political system from a local point of view, or a wider point of view? If you don't like it, let me ask you.... have you run for office? Have you gotten a decent education? Have you got a bunch of supporters behind you to run for office? If not, you should. I mean "talk" is cheap right? But action means standing behind yr words.

Serious question: if Trump wins and withdraws all assistance to Ukraine, can the EU or the rest of NATO support Ukraine or are they also too reliant on American military that they can’t do anything? Serious question 2: if EU or NATO minus USA does have the capabilities to pick up the slack after Trump stops helping Ukraine, will they?

@Jimmy-ye3wg
@Jimmy-ye3wg Ай бұрын
@@kay1957-gu7ey of course, Poland is a NATO country, the idea that Russia will attack NATO is ridiculous. This conflict arose around the threat posed by NATO to the Russian Federation through potential Ukrainian membership and collusion. Calling NATO a purely defensive alliance is like calling North Korea a Democratic Republic.
