I beg to differ; Ukraine is an existential issue for Putin, not for Russia. The Ukrainians have also shown that with the proper kit, Ukraine could have re-taken all of its territory; Lord Richards take on this is a disappointment.

Agree 100% if Putin gets away with 4 more oblasts the West will have LOST and Putin won. Were are here the values, international laws, sovereignty, any international agreements and memorandums, what a BIG loss for the West and democracy if Putin gets away with any piece of violently stolen land.

He repeats Putin's propagandist notions about "existential issue" for Russia. If the loss of all those imperial territories wasn't considered existential by Russians back in 1991, then, this whole question is totally meaningless now. Russians had accepted the loss of all those territories back then and now must adhere to the new geopolitical reality or face the consequences. All these "lords Richards", willingly or not, play into Putin's hand. The main problem is that the West don't want to defeat Russia. The western wiseacres want to prevent Russian disentagration. It is why they didn't give enough weapons to Ukraine.

I agree. The US needs to learn that lesson and needs to stop meddling in the affairs of others, especially where their vital security interests are concerned. I often wonder how the US would respond to Russia orchestrating a coup in Mexico and installing a government that was vehemently hostile to the US, arming that government to the teeth, building bio-weapons labs there, etc. Would the US respect the sovereign democratic rights of Mexico in those circumstances? History (Cuba) suggests not.

Here's the thing you got wrong: RU didn't care about UA territory. How do I know? Because I've read the 2022 peace proposal drafts and in none of them RU demanded any land. I agree. And Ukraine can't be properly rebuilt and become prosperous without getting Crimea back. They'll have a hard time exporting their agricultural products without their occupied ports, and russia controlling Crimea will control the shipping from Ukraine's remaining ports. In that situation noone will be inclined to invest in Ukraine. Ukraine will become a failed state, exactly what russia wants. It is in our interest that Ukraine, being the bolwark between us and russia, gets all their territories back, incl. Crimea, so they can revive and prosper.

the Russian 'security' psyche is predicated primarily on geography (for better or worse and mine is an observation not a position or an advocacy). With a presently dwindling population, and a land mass (western border) that is impossible to defend or secure, the Russians have always, going back to Catherine The Great (circa 1780's) posited that security from potential European aggressors can only be feasible if the Empire pushes out to the West and utilize the natural formations of geography to make the Empire easier (less men, less cost) to defend. This entailed utilizing the Baltic to the Black Sea as N and S buffers and the Carpathian Mountains. This reduces the 3000 mile immensely flat, border from Ukraine on Sea of Azoz near Rostov to Baltic Sea in Estonia to a more easily defendable gap in Poland and a sliver or land in Bulgaria/ Romania where the Carpathians level down. Russian demography is in a hard collapse, and Putin had a 'now or never' option, as in 5-10 years he would have less and less manpower available. It was a tremendous gamble, an unnecessary one (my opinion) and it's highly unlikely to pay off. It will result in his death by the hands of other Russians (my opinion) and probably by the summer of 2025. That said, The Russian psyche (fear of being invaded from the West) is not without precedent, but is antiquated in this, the 21st Century, especially when Russia had a great deal going with Western Commerce. My Ukrainian friend, a very successful small business owner in the States, told me 3 months after the invasion, when asked why he thought Putin invaded: "envy".

Lord Richards repeatedly stated that, from the Russian perspective, a defeat in Ukraine poses an existential threat to their country. In contrast, Mikhail Khodorkovsky argued shortly after the invasion that such a defeat would pose an existential threat to the Putin regime, not to Russia itself. He suggested that a Russian loss could ultimately benefit the country by exposing the failures of the current leadership and paving the way for a transformation focused on the prosperity of the people, rather than the perpetuation of an authoritarian regime.

Why aren't we in west simply stating what we all believe in and that is we believe in a rules-based international community where it is not allowed for a stronger, neighboring country to occupy, annex territory, invade, or take over a smaller sovereign country? We should say we understand Russia's position, but this is ours. Ukraine is a sovereign nation and therefore we cannot now or ever allow it to be chopped up in pieces and taken a prize by anyone. Lord Richards may be an expert, yet I find his stance a little strange. The main issue hampering Ukraine was not Russian strength, it has been the failure of the West to deliver what was needed to support Ukraine. It is NOT an existential threat to Russia, it is as another poster has commented, an existential threat to Putin. Russia is the last imperial Power following WW2, and it needs to be taken to task, and the current events in Georgia, should indicate to the world that Russia cannot go on Empire building. Crimea must be returned to Ukraine, whether now or in the future. Ukraine must be allowed into NATO and Russia cannot be allowed to use nuclear threats to scare the weak minded lefties

Lord Richards repeatedly asserts that holding Ukraine is an "existential' matter for Russia. But I am not so sure. Russia voluntarily agreed the independence of Ukraine in 1991-94. No one held a gun to their head. I suppose it might now be an existential matter for Putin's himself, but I question whether most Russians cared until Putin became an imperial revanchist in 2008 with Georgia, then Ukraine 2014. We frequently also hear that it is obviously impossible for Ukraine to "win" against a much larger power like Russia. Depends how you define "win." If it means to conquer Russia, then obviously not. If it means to wear down an invader until they go home, then it is just as possible as the North Vietnamese defeating the US and Afghanistan defeating the USSR.

@@jimmydaddo9357 You do realize that Ukraine's conscription age is 25, not 18, right? They've got a lot of fight left in them. The greater issue is optimization (don't train troops on equipment that you don't have) along with the opportunity cost (a citizen in a trench doesn't pay tax $$ which helps pay for the war). Meanwhile Russia's running out of runway on the economic front at 10X the speed. 30% mortgage rates in Russia, currency crisis,1,000 malls facing bankruptcy, military industry running at financial losses, Gazprom losing $7B/year, pipes exploding again just like last winter. Then there's the issue that Russia has to import NK troops, conducts assaults via motorcycles and Chinese golf-carts, and has virtually depleted the enormous Soviet Union inheritance of military equipment. While its true that Ukraine doesn't have the manpower to take back the Donbas or Crimea, it's as likely as not that Russian troops abandon positions after they're not paid.

You run out of men and money - as Putin is currently. Putin defeat is not far away - weeks, perhaps a few months, not years.

The economy is in free fall, there's 100k dead and 500k or more injured Russians. The gains have come to a stand still and Ukraine controls a part of Kursk. Also, China are sick of it all and pulled their support and Syria has gone full civil war due to how weak Russian protection has become. That's how.

So expanding NATO in contravention of the promises made after the fall of communism is what exactly?

There were no promises. Before or after. Show one document that states it was agreed. Russia cannot dictate to other countries how they choose to defend themselves. Former soviet countries chose to join NATO for their protection. NATO did not invade them and force them like Russia has done for 100s years

@@harryw29 There are plenty of accounts of those promises. But once we started in earnest in the Balkans it was clear what was going to happen and it is happening. Western expansionism, which destroys culture, health, economy and security from within. Strange we did not let Yugoslavia into the EU.

Someone said that to the Entente Cordiale in 1852, to Japan in 1904, to Germany in 1913, to the Afghanis in 1988, and to the Syrian rebels last month.

Ukraine wont get those oblasts back. Russia advanced 750 sq km2 in November, a similar amount in October. And keeps on advancing,

The net advancement has stopped in the past week. Ruzzia is being pushed back in some places by a mile or two; in others, it advances by a mile or two. In Syria, ruzzia is getting shellacked all the way from Aleppo to Damascus, thanks to training provided by Ukrainian and Turkish forces to the 'rebels.'
