It makes sense for Russia to have used this situation to remove themselves from negotiations in bad faith from Ukraine/Washington they were concerned about. There is no sign of foreign policy change with the shuffle in Washington, and accelerating collapse of Ukrainian military is in Russia's best interests. With Russia now having constructed defenses in front of the Kursk NPP, what is the strategic significance of the territory being assaulted by Ukraine? This is one of the many lightly populated regions of Russia (next to equally sparsely populated Sumy region). Behind this region is just more Russian countryside, to what end? In this sense, Ukraine has done Russia a favor. It has diluted the capacities of the troops in the strategically critical Pokrovsk sector while ensuring that very fine Ukrainian units are engaged where they can achieve no goal.

Weirdly enough, this whole gamble offensive makes sense (relatively speaking) in only one way. The concept that Putin would be brought to heel if Ukraine held Russian territory and so the negotiations would be kinder to Ukraine, is asinine. Putin would simply not enter negotiations until this land was scrubbed of Ukrainian force, period. This offensive only makes sense in that it was an attempt to dash in and grab nuclear weapons. If Ukraine had even a single nuclear weapon, it would change the dynamic of negotiations. If they had managed to get a hold over several then they have even more to negotiate with. They thought they could surprise the Russians and dash in, grab some weapons from either of the facilities around Kursk and then hop back across the border or perhaps hold the facilities. This reeks of the CIA and their Hollywood movie planning.

The hype spreaded in the media about scared helpless Russians is simply ridiculous. They are maybe angry because of the now cancelled peace negotiations , but forced to act. You are right. Most people who are saying that this is embarrassing for Russia, that Putin is soft and bla bla bla doesn't have enough brain cells to understand that people are dying at war everyday, not only soldiers, but also civilians. Ukraine is shelling Russian civilians everyday along the entire frontline. In Donbass they have been doing this for 10 years already. If Ukraine had used these troops on an active section of the front where Ukrainian army has a fortified positions, then most likely Russia would have lost more soldiers there than it lost soldiers and civilians in Kursk.

I suspect the military knew but didn't tell Putin as he would not have approved of the tactic. The Russian military has been rope-a-doping the AFU for months; the Kursk folly is more of the same. At the end of the day, the AFU will have spent its strategic reserve and Kiev will be open to attack.
