My wife of over 35 years is Iranian, and she has some experience of autocracies. She has believed for a long time now that Putin is dead and that his look alikes are the public face of the man, or men, who are really in charge of Russia. When the time is right, these men will blame everything on Putin and announce his successor. The question is what happens to the look alikes then. They can hardly allow them to wander off to a happy retirement. :( I'm not totally convinced by her theory, but I don't see it as impossible.

If I am understanding it correctly the businesses you speak of are not businesses in the accepted 'Western' sense of the word. In the "West" outside of wartime military emergency measures, 'business' to a limited extent is the tail that wags the government dog. Under a radically different regime the government dog wags the business tail at all times and in secret. So the oligarchs may have little say whether they are losing money or not [it may not be their money]. And if you take the example of the former head of Wagner Group who was seemingly thrust into that hot-seat, some of the oligarchs may be reluctant to be in the position to have their snouts in the trough but happy to go with the flow whoever is top dog. [So Alexi, you say that you want to resign. How does your family feel about that?]

I think Putin had a serious health event in Oct of 23. However, he appears to have made a recovery behind the scenes and gotten back to business in the Spring, about when Patrushev was "demoted." He "became" before our very eyes a more serious and scary Putin, without the silly deferential smile and awkwardness of that overused double. We could tell previously that rulers knew it wasn't him. How are they responding now?
