The brutal invasion of Ukraine has shown the world that Vladimir Putin has no regard for rules. Breaching international laws, and weaponizing anything he can to achieve his objectives. Can there be any method to his madness? What of Putin’s strategy? To analyze that further and get a sense of what is next as we enter the second year of the war in Ukraine there’s a man who knows a thing or two about strategy. Garry Kasparov - chess grandmaster, former World Chess Champion who ranked number one in the world for 20 years, political activist, and chairman of The Renew Democracy Initiative. He’s also a writer including a book published in 2015 entitled ‘ Winter Is Coming’ in which he warned of Russia’s descent into dictatorship. His life has also made him an ardent supporter of human rights, democracy and a fierce opponent of Vladimir Putin.

As a Scot living a bit further north in Western Australia I hear the media saying people are getting “tired of the war” or “would Like Ukraine to compromise of giving up land” etc. I don’t see it or hear it, only universal support for Ukraine. I think the media needs to tread carefully, making up talking points that give ideas to russia and promoting a false narrative.

Bright future? You honestly believe escalating will make the world safer? Why did the US interfere in the region. This Russian/Ukraine war is a tragedy that needs to end now!!! It’s an emergency heading in an even worse direction which is escalation. Our global stability is truly at stake and I believe potentially safety in the US too if we don’t address the festering wound. I have spent many months understanding the route for deescalation of Russia-Ukraine conflict and the complex nuanced background of which you hear nothing about in the media. Escalation is a chicken fight that will not end well! I love that the agreements to not join Nato are totally not taken into consideration.. Operation Seabreeze Nato weapons parading in the Black Sea for 2 weeks in 2021 and then Zeleneky asking for assistance from all those countries to take it back by war, but no it wasn't provoked.. US stands on stage with people that overthrowing a democratically elected leader AFTER he stepped down. The G7 strategy is folly. I am curious how people think an escalation will realistically succeed? What does that look like? It’s a nice fantasy- Russia withdraws from Crimea and the Donbas and apologizes and leaves Ukraine and the US alone. The tragedy is there is an easy way out. Weakening Russia to the point where they give up Crimea (who were denied the opportunity to have their election overseen by international community in 2014 after the US decided who the new president should be after the Maidan Revolution- which Is proven fact with Victoria Nuland leaked audio) and abandon supporting the Donbass bid for independence is one unlikely to happen without massive negative effects and 2 is our global stability not worth giving these two small regions their independence from Ukraine over and the right to determine their own fate? Not to mention Israeli Prime Minister Bennet said US and UK derailed peace talks on purpose last Feb.

Doesn't anyone find it suspicious that Putin, who "In 1997, he received his Ph.D. in economics (Candidate of Economic Sciences) at the Saint Petersburg Mining University for a thesis on the strategic planning of the mineral economy" is concentrating on taking the areas of Ukraine where petroleum and natural gas are found.

Garry Kasparov has known for many years the highly dangerous, destructive mindset of Putin. What he's more than willing to do in order to bring his imperialistic mindset to fruitation in former Soviet ran countries. His dismissal and denial of the Ukranian state, its people, its language. Dismissing all that defines Ukraine. Referring to them as Little Russians, not by their Ukranian nationality of which they are. I think the fear of russia falling apart and dissolving into many different nuclear armed states, is behind many Western governments reluctance to give Ukraine everything it needs to win this war and win it quickly. It seems they are being given just enough to fight to a stalemate, rather than hand russia the embarrassing defeat it rightly deserves. The faster russia loses the better, the longer this goes on the more likely China will start supplying weapons to russia, because China has an interest in drawing down Western arms supplies and ammunition.

Gary Kasparov might play a vital role in rescuing the sad Russian people from the deep, cold, black hole that Putin and the old KGB boys have lead them into. The costs are truly horrible.

Thank you mr kasparov! Also, china is just hoping this is is over soon. They don't want to help russia either or chose sides here. They need russia's resources so xi can't take position against putin, but also don't want to support russia in a meaningful way. Backing russia brings no bennefit whatsoever to china. I wish Gary Kasparov was governing in Russia along with Navalny and others who share their vision. Had that been the case you wouldn't have had Russian citizens going into another neighboring county, stealing their toilets, washing machines etc, because they would have had those things already as well as decent houses. It's heartbreaking to see how much wealth Putin and his likes lavish on themselves while the ordinary person does not seem to have any worth other than to be thrown into a war that they don't know what they are fighting for. Good luck, Mr Kasparov, hope your time will come.

As a Brazilian, I feel ashamed when our politics are mentioned worldwide (we had so many plain bad and internationally irrelevant presidents in recent past). Our country always had a neutral position in armed conflicts (usually providing humanitarian aid), but this was a full blown invasion, no excuse, we should have been on Ukraine’s side from the start. Unfortunately our country needs Russia (for fertilizers and other raw materials) and our president must look after the needs of our country, but our country also needs moral standards, and no politician here are known by their “moral standards”. We were in a doomsday election for president, the previous was incompetent and dumb as a door, the current one is a convicted criminal (at best) let loose by a weak criminal system. It was crazy, so many people defending one side or another during the election (when they both just care about their pockets). Lula is going to break Brazil, he appointed all his “friends” (again) to key positions in our government (regardless of expertise in the matter, which they don’t have), he’s going to give small change to the less fortunate ones to keep them “happy” while suck money from every possible corner. But AFAIK, most of us stand with Ukraine!

@@nic7048 are seriously comparing Brazil to the US or Australia? You’re joking, right? I feel this way because I had the opportunity to work and befriend with people from lots of different countries (US, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Czech Republic, Germany, England, Finland and France (even from Russia)), visited several countries (both at work and on vacation). I was really disappointed with Brazil after knowing so many different cultures, we are centuries behind in education, culture and respect to each other. We don’t really know how to vote, we keep voting for the same old corrupt politicians, we are more interested on Carnival, football, TV shows and bad music than things that matter (both international and local). We usually compare ourselves to countries in worse conditions instead of aiming at better examples. We got a long way to go and it always seems like we are stepping sideways, not forward.

On 17 September 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east, 16 days after Nazi Germany invaded Poland from the west." - from Wikipedia

When Russia began the full invasion in 2022, my first thought was that the only way Russia would be able to continue the war was to get assistance from China, and I would not be surprised if part of the population began learning Mandarin as a second language, or even had to give up a part of its land to China. It is good to hear that Kasparov acknowledges the possibility of something like this.

*Please* have Garry Kasparov back on the show again. He brought to light several hot topics in 20 minutes which many other "experts" either avoid due to their "sensitive" nature, or simply don't understand. One outrageous circumstance that's never even discussed and which Garry mentioned instantly, is e.g. *the white elephant in the room* that the REPEATEDLY disloyal and unreliable *"allies"* of *Turkey* and *Hungary* are still members of NATO and the EU (in the latter case).
@shtroizn
@shtroizn Жыл бұрын
Turkey is a problem. On the one hand - yes it is an unreliable ally. On the other hand it is an essential ally. Turkey is huge and controls some of the most important shipping lanes in the Mediterranean. It is also a predominantly Muslim country and can act as a bridge between Christian Europe and the Muslim world. It also has a degree of clout over Iran (and certainly Syria). Turkey also provided Ukraine with the Bayraktar drones which they utilized to great effect. If Turkey wasn't in NATO it could lean towards Russia and that would spell disaster. The Turks were offended at the cold response to the possibility of Turkey becoming a member of the EU. No need to further offend them. Erdogan is not my favorite politician (and this is an understatement) but one cannot deny he is a very experienced diplomat. He knows how to play the game and he is aware of his country's strategic importance. Better keep him an ally and try to appease him than to risk him turning his back or worse - siding with Russia. What this means for Finland and especially Sweden is yet unclear. Some deal should be arranged ASAP - that I am pretty sure of. Hungary is a different issue, especially under this current PM and administration.
