"Their air defence is not properly coordinated or very effective in Crimea...Russia cannot actually defend this place."
Ukraine will make Crimea untenable and force Putin's Black Sea Fleet out of Sevastopol if Russian air defences don't improve, says Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges.

I continue to be impressed by Kate - she is one of the very best interviewers out there. Meticulously prepared, short but relevant context, very clear and precisely targeted questions, complete sentences. And what’s most satisfying in her style is that once she asks a question, she stops talking! Even very good interviewers continue to prattle on after the question mark - while we want to hear the answer.

Because the video may have been recorded earlier. It’s possible he’s not dead, but in the hospital, severely injured and they’re hoping he will recover and that the video they presented is a stopgap to make people think he’s fine, for now. We really don’t know.

Because they don't want to be seen to dance to Kyiv's tune, and anyway they are not keen to draw attention to the strike at all. The fact is of course that it would be highly unlikely that Moscow would draw attention to the man and publish a TV clip with him being alive if he was actually dead and they would end up a hostage to their own disinformation. If he was dead the chances are they wouldn't say anything about it at all. So in short they are doing precisely what you would expect if he were alive, and precisely what you wouldn't if he weren't.

He definitely knows more about the black sea strategies than most other people. The idea to give AFU ATACMS with cluster vs unitary officially is due to the idea that we don't use the cluster versions anymore, so we can spare them - but I think Gen Hodges might agree that the real reason is that the US Administration knows that with unitary warheads, the Kerch bridge would be history. Maybe not enough to drop it into the sea but it would put it out of commission for a long time.

I should say though rather that I strongly feel its a still image. I can't fully confirm that. Because he's only on it for about 8 seconds so it's absolutely possible that someone could stay totally still for such a short period of time. But in my opinion if you want people to know that someones alive and obviously thats quite important for their war effort, then why would you only release a totally still as a statue 8 second segment of them? So that effected my conclusion a bit when I said that I confirm its a still image. I can confirm that frame by frame for the whole duration he does not appear to move a millimeter and I watched it through about 15 or 20 times frame by frame paying attention to every muscle and every crease of his face. The bits where it looks like he moves is actually aliasing that occurs consistently across the whole image. Why wouldn't you just film him you know? If its important for people to know. Its not that hard, everyones got a camera on their phone. They could make the Ukranians look slightly foolish although not by much if they did that. So why just give us 8 seconds of a totally still image? Well probably because someone higher up told a subordinate to do it and gave them about 10 minutes by the looks of it. @@2358nick

Once again, LTG Hodges is our wisest and most knowledgeable military commentator, bar none. I will follow him, on whatever channel carries him, instantly and permanently. I'd also follow him to the ends of the earth and back, if so ordered (I just returned from Uzbekistan, where we two aging soldiers stood on the sagging foundations of Alexander's easternmost fortress, so I know what that means).

On one point I certainly agree with Ben Hodges: any delay (almost everything the West sends to Ukraine arrives with a significant delay) will undo many of the gains Ukraine has currently made on the battlefield. And the saddest thing is that with each further delay in the supply of these weapons, losses on the battlefield increase.

@@tubthump Supply chains and communication, command, and control, intelligence, etc. can all be gained on the battlefield without advancing a single centimeter of territorial contact. The U. S. S. Constitution (our "Old Ironside" that wasn't even clad with iron armor) didn't gain "territory" on the high seas fighting against the British Navy. Yet its disruptions were de facto defeating the British Navy.

I wrote the White House about this point: You need to "sell" the war. There is certainly a public relations side to this and it boils down to people being aware of what is truly at stake- FREEDOM! This is about standing against the same thing essentially as we stood against in WWII. It is necessary that most people know this.
