I believe many commentators here are overlooking the fact that Mr. Galeotti is primarily a historian, and thus by extrapolating from current events is able to imagine a number of scenarios which belong to the future. Far from effectually saying "look how clever I am, I can read the future" he is suggesting the ways things could go, and doesn't pretend to know which one will actually become reality. At all events, he takes a long-term view.

@@adaslesniak You are a joker. Overnight, we Westerners took away the right to property from the Russian oligarchs who had property, financial assets in Europe and the US. The right to property is an inalienable right, it is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Universal law takes precedence on all national laws. We have flouted what we ourselves have written. With this forfeiture, a very bad signal has been sent to non-Western countries and we will pay the costs in the not very distant future because trust has been completely broken. Unlike what many people believe, wars do not need to end with a negotiated peace. For example the war in Korea did not end with negotiations. Nor did the cold war. It is perfectly possible, even likely, that if Putin stays in power (a BIG if), a new cold war will develop between NATO and Russia. If he is ousted, it is likely that the various Russian warlords will recall their troops from Ukraine to fight in Russia. So, I think it is unlikely that this will end with negotiations, for the foreseeable future.
@mikestray76
@mikestray76 10 ай бұрын
Wars always end with a negotiated peace. Even if one side is comprehensively beaten, a peace plan is then drawn up and the defeated side is a signatory to it. The Korean war most certainly did end with negotiations. The US, China and North Korea signed an armistice in 1953, ending the Korean war. A cold war isn't an actual war so not sure it fits the bill, however, Reagan and Gorbachev signed the INF treaty in 1987 which effectively ended the cold war. All wars have to end with a negotiated peace,, otherwise they haven't ended.

The risks, for Russia, are monstrous. You can't control the weather that will move the radiation cloud. Most days, with the help of the jet stream, air moves west to east in the Northeen Hemisphere. That brings it to Russia. And also to Turkey, the second largest military within NATO. How anyone (the rest of the world) responds is a great unknown. How similar will they view it to using nuclear weapons? Will it galvanize western support for Ukraine to even stronger levels? It could. As much as some feel negotiating a peace deal now to take the nuclear risks of the table is prudent (it's not), if a tactical nuke gets used, or a plant is blown, it may wake people up to the fact Russia is a cancer that must, by all means necessary, be destroyed. It will certainly make Russia a forever pariah on the global political and economic stage. Forever sanctions. Nobody ever trades with Russia again. Even after Putin is gone. Let them collapse to zero and become another isolated North Korea. The potential threat that they may blow the nuclear plant is worth far more than actually doing it. However, despite the risks outweighing the benefits, by far, we can't fully dismiss a panicking Russia seeing a complete loss to this war, and the existential threat that represents to the regime in power. Blowing the plant could become a Hail Mary act, to just see where those chips land.

That's not true. Obama supplied non lethal stuff like blankets. Trump supplied actual weapons to Ukraine. Why do you think the Russians waited until Biden was president to attack? They did not attack on Trumps watch. In fact, Congress has unearthed evidence that the CEO of Burisma(the company Hunter was on the board) bribed(5-10 million) Joe as VP to pressure the Ukraine government to fire the prosecutor. They did. In fact, there is a famous video where Biden is bragging that he asked Obama if it was OK to withhold massive aid package from Ukraine if they did not fire the prosecutor investigating Burisma, the energy company where Hunter was on the board. Hunter knows nothing about energy. The kicker here is that the CEO is now known to be an SVR Asset. SVR is the Russian foreign service. So Biden received a bribe from a SVR asset. Now tell me how, in your Russia,Russia,Russia derangement, did you come to think Trump is a Russian asset?

This is all propaganda!! Since 2014, Ukraine is no longer a sovereign and independent country. This country has fallen into the hands of anglosaxon forces who do not want the world to change. But for that, you still need to know the story instead of foolishly wishing for the end of Putin's regime. Russia will never fall and know that if something bad happens to Putin, behind him are even tougher people to make even more drastic decisions. Regarding the West, the contract is coming to an end.
