Putin's 'rotten' Russia needs to change - Evgenia Kara-Murza on the fight for Russian freedom

When Evgenia Kara-Murza and her husband Vladimir parted ways in April 2022, she had no idea that would be the last time they’d see each other.
Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe
Vladimir, a long-time Russian opposition activist, was arrested in Moscow later that month and is now serving 25 years in prison for his public criticism of President Vladimir Putin and Russia's war on Ukraine. Since then, Evgenia has taken up the mantle of his activism, travelling around the world to speak out against his detention and the crimes of Putin’s authoritarian regime.
Today on Ways to Change the World, Evgenia Kara-Murza joins Krishnan Guru-Murthy to talk about her fight to free Russia’s political prisoners, the toll Vladimir’s detention has taken on their family and whether she can envisage a future in a free, democratic Russia.

I loved hearing a longer form conversation with Evgenia after seeing her speaking on Channel 4 News and other outlets - what a remarkably strong and brave woman! 💪🏻 I’ve long admired and respected her husband Vladimir when I’ve seen him speak, and the outrageously disproportionate incarceration and treatment of him, Navalny, and basically every political prisoner of an authoritarian regime, leaves me feeling sickened and frustrated that there isn’t more being done to safeguard their basic human rights. And that’s just me speaking as a progressive and a human with empathy, let alone imagining how someone with personal involvement would be feeling.

Russia has always been "rotten" and stood on a delicate power-balance. It's naive to assume that a "free and democratic" Russia can remain as one entity. Internal socio-economic and regional disparities are so huge, Russia needs to split into multiple countries for that to happen. No single person or regime can manage Russia without an iron fist. Without a strong and powerful regime, Russia can easily disintegrate, which is not a bad thing for the quality of life of ordinary Russian citizens in the long-run. But for the sake of nuclear safety, we need Russia to be united and stable.

I am sick of these political protesters who knowingly walked into obvious incarceration,( or death) and then they and their supporters go around seeking support and resources to get them out, or seek compensation and justice. Ironically their ability to protest becomes zero, and are therefore totally ineffective. “What did you expect to happen when you left him in April 2022” . She did not answer that Q. Why ? because, an honest answer has little integrity or sense. The West need to support people who help themselves, and others, not seeking martyrdom.

What part of Russia is a "dictatorship" do too many people not understand? 'Dictatorships...' don't even allow their own people to speak out, or know the truth... so why on earth would think for a moment they would tell "you" the truth? If a Russian person even calls this a 'war...' they can face upwards of "10 years" or more in jail, or worse be murdered by the regime. Putin has said this 'war...' has to be called a "special military operation." Russian soldiers are brutalised, lied to and tortured by their own government. The families how lose loved ones, few get the death payments promised them, and soldiers themselves are left often with no pay or weapons with substandard equipment, which left many to freeze to death in winter. There are no free fair elections in Russia under Putin - all free media and political opposition has been shut down, journalists, politicians and ordinary people - imprisoned or murdered! Many have been taken in by Russian disinformation: by the way it was Russia under Stalin and the KGB in 1923 which arrived at the concept and coined the word 'disinformation!' They even gave it a Western sounding name, so we would more easily adopt it... so that worked? Putin has murdered "100 000s" of people in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, Moldova, Belarus and Ukraine and elsewhere in the world. Syria, was a people's uprising as a result of the Arab Spring, which began in Tunisia in 2010, as a result Assad slaughtered peaceful protesters with gunships. The people fought bravely for years, but when Damascus was about to fall, Assad called in Putin. Assad and Putin then murdered "100 000s" of people, dropping bombs on children in their schools, burning them alive! In Russia itself, if people even call the Ukraine Russia War, a "war..." they can face up to "10 years" in jail, or if someone is a high profile politician or public figure, then can be imprisoned or even murdered. A recent UN stated the in a terror campaign orchestrated by Putin... "children" as young as '4' years old are being tortured and raped. We must act to stop this, and support the people of Ukraine to ensure this ends... in defeating the Putin Regime this could be a turning corner for humanity, in our search to end war, and all injustice?

Boris Nemtsov, a Russian dissident politician highly critical of President Vladimir Putin often sounded like an agent of Washington. He was shot and killed today on a street near Red Square. If Nemtsov wasn’t assassinated by the CIA in order to blame Putin, most likely Nemtsov was killed by Russian nationalists who saw him as Washington’s agent. Remembering the Magnitsky affair that resulted in sanctions imposed on Russians as a result of the US Congress over-reacting to a jail death in Russia, Nemtsov’s death will likely be blamed on Putin. The Western media will repeat endlessly, with no evidence, that Putin had his critic killed. I can tell you one thing, and that is that Putin is much too smart to play into Washington’s hands in this way. Moreover, Nemtsov, although a loud mouth, had no impact on Putin’s 85% approval rating. Nemtsov’s support resided in the Washington-funded NGOs in Russia. If the CIA assassinated Nemtsov, they killed their own asset. It remains to be seen if the propaganda gains justify the CIA’s loss of a Putin critic. Boris was this woman's hero and involved in CIA backed NGO's in Russia.

The Kremlin must really feel threatened by this woman's voice as they've obviously enlisted their best propagandist to try and obfuscate this woman's powerful testimony. The ever changing story of Russian propaganda has twisted itself into a pretzel. I'm not buying your latest propaganda and want to let you know that you're on the losing side if you haven't figured it out already.

Ukraine has jailed all of its opposition and has made it law that the next elections will be held when the conflict is over, however long that may be.

Ukraine has been routing out pro-Russian traitors and/or corrupt elements within its political infrastructure for very good reason. I would imagine some are not even in opposition. The country is at war (not of its own volition) and therefore naturally is under martial law, under which fair and democratic elections are impossible and so must be paused. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible...

No, they have not!!! Just a disgracefully ill-informed comment! Seriously do you practice making such daft comments? The former President fight by Zelensky's side... he's been seen all over the TV? Also many oppositions appear regularly on TV! The only parties which were removed were those with links to Russia! You know people are risking their lives, and losing these everyday... and you can't even be bothered learning your facts?

What conflict? Or do you mean the russian invasion due to which Ukraine finds herself in a war now for over a year? Did you know, that countrys regulate the processing of mandatory election in times of war by law? And that it is absolutely common sense, that proper elections are likely to be successfully organised in peace-times and not, while you are fighting and invading foreign army that occupies parts of your country and bombs your population constantly?

Where did you get this "information", Ukraine government has jailed it's opposition? This makes no sense in a parlamentary democracy - is this difficult for you to imagine? Please share the source/link of your "information" on this for transparency and fact-checking. Thank you.

@@anjafark You're right. It makes no sense in a democracy. That's because Ukraine is not a democracy. I suggest you turn off your TV and do some of your own research. You can easily find this information anywhere on the internet that is not MSM and probably even on the Verkhovna Rada website but I'm certainly not about to do your homework for you. It turns out that most people asking for links/proof are not really looking for links, proof or truth but to discredit the information. Do you own fact checking or you are free not to believe me.
