“Putin is the only Russian leader to have provoked an invasion of Russian territory and lost Russian territory since World War two, this has got to raise questions in the minds of the elite.“
Doubt is growing in Moscow as the elite starts to question Putin’s war strategy, says former US ambassador Kurt Volker.

Why go through this enormous pretense that Russia is not the enem, we want to be friends, we'd like to get along, blah blah when the exact reverse is true? Why pretend they are a civilized nation that follow international rules, respect human rights and recognized borders? They don't do any of these things - they know it, we know it and they know that we know it.

I suppose, but they’re a bit leaky though - there’s cases of third parties importing Russian raw materials, refining them and selling products to the West, and I’ve heard old Vlad is not above flying planes stuffed full of gold around to get things done. If we want sanctions to bite harder, we’d have to find a couple of ways to plug a few of the holes.

People realise, don't they, that democratic and stable countries like Switzerland, the UK and Norway are NOT part of the EU? And that Ireland and Switzerland are NOT members of NATO? If you have a war which ends where Crimea and parts of the Donbas are ceded to Russia, then the invasions by Russia in 1994 and 2022 will be seen to have succeeded. That aggression pays. If your neighbour has grabbed part of your back garden and then broke into your kitchen and conservatory, it would NOT be an acceptable end, after disussions with the neighbour and the Police, to allow him to keep the conservatory and part of the garden if he agrees to allow you to keep the rest of YOUR property. A further attack would inevitably follow...

Today the people of Europe have a very good reason to be worried and concerned. When a country targets and kills innocent civilians with rockets missiles and artillery. Like Russia is still doing in Ukraine. And those 53 Ukrainian civilians killed while attending a memorial service. In the Kharkiv region and village of Hroza on October 11th 2023 comes to mind. Should Ukraine lose the war and Russia decides that it wants more territory than just Ukraine. Then other European countries should expect the same kind of treatment from Russia with their own civilian population. No doubt other European Nato countries are aware of this fact too. And they will do everything they can to give aid and help support the people of Ukraine. Obviously for Europe's safety and future too not just Ukraine.

The canal is closed because the dam across the dnipro was blown up. The dam raised water level high enough to feed flow into the canal. That canal was actually blocked by Ukraine when Putin sent in LGM’s to take Crimea in 2014. So…does Russia now have a water right? They have access but the river’s water level is now too low. Maybe Russia pumps into the canal.

Mr Volker couldn't be more Spot On if he tried, (obviously he has here indeed tried)!! The problem has been the Anxiety Level of this particular General Election Cycle which was already SKY HIGH when President Biden won this last time. It was a known commodity four years ago that D.J.T. was going to run again and we would be in THIS precise Dilemma. Only the White House had done a remarkable job of keeping Quiet on just how far Biden had deteriorated over the past three years. As soon as the DNC found out due to the Debate, it became ALL THIS. EVERYTHING else has become Secondary to the Election now but I guarantee that THIS is why there has been very little cognizant communication at ALL coming from D.C. this Presidential Term. Thanks so much for the Post.

If you give in to blackmail once, it is absolutely certain that the blackmailer will repeat the blackmail - but only with higher stakes (greater threat). Eventually one day this steadily increasing stakes leads to the blackmailed is fed up and doesn´t want to give in any longer. Then the blackmailer must carry out the threatened measure if he wants to continue playing the game that has worked so well for him up to that point. Thus, if one wants to avoid the use of nuclear weapons, one must not give in to the slightest threat to use nuclear weapons. For by giving in, one encourages the threatener to make more and more new threats, because he succeeds each time. Secondary effect: Every dictator, terrorist or religious leader who is at all possible, would immediately acquire nuclear weapons, because he can blackmail others with them. Thereupon further states would strive to procure nuclear weapons in order not to be blackmailable. And so on ... At some point, all states would have nuclear weapons. - And all terrorist organizations would have nuclear weapons and all others who can afford them would have them, too. Putin is waging a war of conquest and destruction under the protection of his nuclear weapons.

I don't see how Russia let's go of Crimea unless they are militarily forced out. I don't see Ukraine doing that without massive Western support. Seized Russian assets might be used to trade for the return of Ukrainian land.

There is no point giving Ukraine security guarantees. They were given those in exchange for nuclear weapons and the US particularly have been wobbly over that commitment. The EU breaks its own rules so can't be depended on to honour its commitments. That leaves NATO. The only solution that makes any sense is for Russia to come away from this with no gains and a wrecked economy. The 1991 borders are the only possible settlement with no restrictions on Ukraines options in foreign relations going forward. Anything less will mean Russia will rearm and re attack.

I think that I understand the Kursk strategy more now. The Ukrainian military can pay off Russian commanders, persuading them to surrender. The land captured could provide land for the surrendered Russian soldiers to live in and to eventually settle. It's a lot better for them than being wiped out at rhe front line. A smart move by Ukraine ..

Are the Russian Glide bombs what Ukraine has to be concerned about? Coming in from quite a distance from Ukraine? Making it difficult to Attack them?

NATO must carefully navigate the fine line between avoiding direct involvement and continuing to support Ukraine in defending its sovereignty. The risk of escalation, particularly with the use of long-range missile capabilities, is substantial. Putin’s warnings about the involvement of NATO satellites highlight how fragile the situation is, as any attack on these assets could trigger a dangerous chain reaction. Enabling Ukraine to produce and deploy such weapons independently offers a potential solution. This approach lessens the perception of direct NATO engagement while still allowing Ukraine to maintain its defense capabilities. By prioritizing support for Ukraine’s domestic arms production and offering technical expertise, NATO can avoid supplying long-range missiles directly, thus steering clear of actions that could provoke a wider conflict with Russia.

Actually, any action by Russia against a NATO country could unleash something that Putin does not want. Should Poland, Finland, or certain other nations enter this war Russia's military would be much further degraded. Putin has done a good job of destroying his own military and he fears the West will finish it off if given a reason to get directly involved. The Russian people understand at this point exactly what Putin is and that he must be stopped before his insane delusions of conquest destroy Russia forever!

This tells me this guy is a full on BSer. NATO ambassador, my foot. So Poland is to extend its air defense into Ukraine? How? Poland has at best 5% air defense coverage, and he wants Poland not to use that on key strategic locations but on Ukraine? How can you guys invite someone who says such utter nonsense. Surely he'd know the air defense capability of Poland and Romania, or is he just blabbering random things?

For Ukraine, each additional weapons capability provided to it is like another chess piece on its side of the board. One piece alone doesn't win a match. But chess, like war, is about how individual capabilities work together as a unified whole. So each additional piece _increases the threat to the opponent of every other piece._
