It looks like the Ukrainians (correctly) have calculated that Putin and his generals have an inflexible approach to the war, and the answer to which is asymmetric, unpredictable, and powerful jabs the Russians will be unable to counter. So, as the Russians continue to drive Westwards on the Eastern front, Ukraine can significantly degrade and disrupt, with much fewer losses.

Good statement. Your last sentences were very important ; powerful jabs the Russians are unable to counter (at least in the short term), and make some impact on Russian territory that *are low cost* (especially *low casualties in the field of battle / advance* ). Ukraine has shown that "asymmetrical" can gain ground and put the Russians further into disarray, and keep their own losses low enough to justify these operations (even if they end up just being a "sideshow" to evicting Russia from Donbas / Luhansk ).

This is also a political strategy. For the last two decades, if you asked an average Russian why they tolerate Putin as a dictator, the answer has always been along the lines of: "It's more important to be strong than to be a democracy." These retaliatory incursions into Russia by Ukraine are weakening Putin in front of the Russian people, proving that he's not as "strong" as they thought. Zelenskyy is deliberately trying to shatter Putin's image of invincibility not only by dragging the war out far longer than Putin himself expected it to last, but by now seizing territory from Russia and launching attacks on Russian military and energy facilities to prove that this is not a war that Russia can win without accepting losses.
@SelectCircle2 ай бұрын
Exactly. It's easier to engineer Putin's downfall than it is to kick him out of Ukraine.
@rajeshkanungo66272 ай бұрын
Yup. As long as there were some trickle-down goodies resulting from the oil and gas exports, the Russians were happier than they had ever been under any previous Soviet or Russian regime. This was also based on the social contract that the Russians had with their government for centuries: The rulers could plunder and pilfer as much as they wanted, and the people tolerated it as long as they were left alone. That is why you hear Russians state over and over again how they are not involved with politics and how they have nothing to do with any of the events. They see the current state of affairs as a breach of the social contract.
@daniels79072 ай бұрын
@@rajeshkanungo6627 - Well, with Putin rounding up men and drafting them to fight in a war for his ego, the social contract has been metaphorically put in a the shredder. The war was fine so long as it felt like it was far away and didn't affect the Russian people. But now it has spilled back onto Russian soil and conscripts face death or capture. Add to that Putin making nuclear threats when NATO's retaliation would level Russia isn't helping. Throw in economic sanctions and people are wondering why they must make so many sacrifices for Putin.

It is pretty obvious the Ukraine drive into Kursk has been a great success, and all the western media is all over it, and loving the embarrassment to Putun. BUT I am seeing absolutely no balance in the coverage on this at all on these channels. It seems like the Russian advances in Donbas have continued and if anything are now making faster progress. So I assume, sooner or later major Ukraine towns/cities and other strategic targets will be under threat and possibly taken by the Russians. I saw one interpretation that Putin has his foot on Ukraine's throat in the Donbas, and the Kursk incursion is simply a diversion, and Putin is determined to not let it distract the Russian advances in Donbas. So, is it too much to ask that these lauded experts to provide us with a more balanced view across the piece ?

Well-reasoned. Well-written. But whatever the topic - not every fact is of equal weight. These incursions might result in Putin's downfall - in which case Russia's gaining ground is moot.
