It looks like the Ukrainians (correctly) have calculated that Putin and his generals have an inflexible approach to the war, and the answer to which is asymmetric, unpredictable, and powerful jabs the Russians will be unable to counter. So, as the Russians continue to drive Westwards on the Eastern front, Ukraine can significantly degrade and disrupt, with much fewer losses.

Good statement. Your last sentences were very important ; powerful jabs the Russians are unable to counter (at least in the short term), and make some impact on Russian territory that *are low cost* (especially *low casualties in the field of battle / advance* ). Ukraine has shown that "asymmetrical" can gain ground and put the Russians further into disarray, and keep their own losses low enough to justify these operations (even if they end up just being a "sideshow" to evicting Russia from Donbas / Luhansk ).

This is also a political strategy. For the last two decades, if you asked an average Russian why they tolerate Putin as a dictator, the answer has always been along the lines of: "It's more important to be strong than to be a democracy." These retaliatory incursions into Russia by Ukraine are weakening Putin in front of the Russian people, proving that he's not as "strong" as they thought. Zelenskyy is deliberately trying to shatter Putin's image of invincibility not only by dragging the war out far longer than Putin himself expected it to last, but by now seizing territory from Russia and launching attacks on Russian military and energy facilities to prove that this is not a war that Russia can win without accepting losses.

Yup. As long as there were some trickle-down goodies resulting from the oil and gas exports, the Russians were happier than they had ever been under any previous Soviet or Russian regime. This was also based on the social contract that the Russians had with their government for centuries: The rulers could plunder and pilfer as much as they wanted, and the people tolerated it as long as they were left alone. That is why you hear Russians state over and over again how they are not involved with politics and how they have nothing to do with any of the events. They see the current state of affairs as a breach of the social contract.
@daniels7907
@daniels7907 2 ай бұрын
@@rajeshkanungo6627 - Well, with Putin rounding up men and drafting them to fight in a war for his ego, the social contract has been metaphorically put in a the shredder. The war was fine so long as it felt like it was far away and didn't affect the Russian people. But now it has spilled back onto Russian soil and conscripts face death or capture. Add to that Putin making nuclear threats when NATO's retaliation would level Russia isn't helping. Throw in economic sanctions and people are wondering why they must make so many sacrifices for Putin.

Please, don't confuse a ballistic missile with a cruise missile. Palyanytsya is the new rocket-drone, that combines capabilities of both a drone and a cruise missile -- not a ballistic missile.
@pgabrieli
@pgabrieli 2 ай бұрын
there's ALSO an actual ballistic missile shortly entering production. I know it's hard to keep up with ukraine's military advancements, but both are on the table, although Palyanytsya is obviously closer to front-line deployment
@victorsago
@victorsago 2 ай бұрын
@@pgabrieli Yes. The upcoming ballistic missile is probably Hrim-2. But it's nowhere close to being operational, and there is no information on when it might be. Palyanytsya, on the other hand, has already had its first deployment against targets in the occupied territories, and now it's only the question of funding the mass production of this hybrid cruise missile/drone. And it is this they were talking about, calling it a "ballistic missile".

I’m curious how folks in Crimea are reacting to this. Is there a resistance network within the country? Hard to believe everyone in that country was fine with Russia’s takeover in 2014.

A lot of people in Crimea considered themselves Russian. Some time after WW2 if was gifted to Ukraine from Russia (in the '50s I think from President Kruschev). Many of them were happy to sign up for Russian passports in 2014. I suspect a good number of them would prefer to be Ukrainian now.

If he weren't convinced to stand down, Prigozhin could have easily made it to Moscow from Rostov-On-Don. Ukraine just confirmed the poor state of Russias defense, despite Putin's show of offensive capability.

It is pretty obvious the Ukraine drive into Kursk has been a great success, and all the western media is all over it, and loving the embarrassment to Putun. BUT I am seeing absolutely no balance in the coverage on this at all on these channels. It seems like the Russian advances in Donbas have continued and if anything are now making faster progress. So I assume, sooner or later major Ukraine towns/cities and other strategic targets will be under threat and possibly taken by the Russians. I saw one interpretation that Putin has his foot on Ukraine's throat in the Donbas, and the Kursk incursion is simply a diversion, and Putin is determined to not let it distract the Russian advances in Donbas. So, is it too much to ask that these lauded experts to provide us with a more balanced view across the piece ?
@SelectCircle
@SelectCircle 2 ай бұрын
Well-reasoned. Well-written. But whatever the topic - not every fact is of equal weight. These incursions might result in Putin's downfall - in which case Russia's gaining ground is moot. In fact I think the story now IS Putin's inevitable downfall - and his success in Donbas just isn't going to prevent that.

Thank you for your breakdown of the events, Colonel Ingram. Succinct and insightful. Just wondering, is that the tricolour I see with the Union Jack? We, the Irish and British, have had our "differences " in the past. And that's the place I would like them to stay. We are neighbours with more in common than differences. 👍

Ukraine should license its new missile drone to NATO so it can be produced in UK or France or Germany in volumes. That would create revenues and then NATO can donate to Ukraine in aid packages so it can be used against Russian airfields. Too, NATO may improve its capabilities.
