I think the ref carries some responsibility here. He is right there and should be taking care of the athletes. he should have known much sooner that she was out (from stress or shock or whatever).

The absolute worst part of high level judo currently, is the officials stand there and watch a competitor brutally strangled unconscious for way too long for example. Then they make a little hand gesture that the player applying the hold, who is fully in the moment trying to win, doesn't even notice and the ref just stands there while someone is hurt. It happens like that often I notice.

Incompetent referee!! In my time, he provided first aid and didn't shrug his shoulders!!
That was just really strange. Her first opponent seemed to be conscious at first. Her legs were tense, but she wasn’t tapping or verbalizing a tap, at least not in an obvious way. Was she unconscious because of the leg pressure? I’ve never seen anything like that.
Brutal to watch. If they aren't moving, you have to assume she's out. Better to have someone upset at a bad call, than have an athlete suffer a life altering or ending injury. Surprised at no attempts to revive. Possible neck injury or paralysis?

Does anybody know if the first victim passed out due to shock, or if she was choked out? I assume her arm was totally destroyed? Wonder if there is any update on her condition?
I don't think Chishima is in question here (on the first action, because the second in not unusual and not so dangerous), because one's can have very flexible limbs, and she can't afford to let go for no reason. But something should be done in these situations. It's possible to say sonomama to hold the action, the referee could touch the body of the other fighter to check if she's still conscious, etc. Perhaps medical enquiries could be made at high level to sanction people who could put their health in danger by resisting too long to arm-blocks because that's not the spirit of Judo. I hope it's not a move toward more violent Judo just for the hype of MMA and so on... (And I don't know MMA much, but I think referees are very attentive to stop combats before real injuries!)
Maeda must have accidentally blocked the air supply to opponent's mouth and nose by her left leg because there is no pressure on opponent's neck. That's why opponent became unconscious and she didn't tap with free left hand and give up, And she is very experience judoka and she know how to tap in this situation. But this whole situation is rare in judo.
@@iieheuskeiiil2120 it’s an expression bro. It’s not supposed to be taken literally. I obviously had to watch it to be able to make the comment. English is weird hey?
Judo is such a primitive sport it is embarrassing. Zero concern for the safety of the athletes. MMA is much more brutal but you wouldn't let this nonsense happen that plays out just because the Refs have to stand around like statues. Honestly speaking, I don't understand why the Olympics allow this vile activity to go on at their events.
